Sony just gave Spider-Man fans another reason to start speculating about the future of the Spider-Verse, and this time, the clues are getting harder to ignore. For years, fans have wondered if Tom Holland would eventually swing into Sony’s animated Multiverse alongside Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and the growing army of Spider-People spread across the franchise. Now, after a new production update and a carefully worded tease from the creative team behind the next film, it suddenly feels like that long-awaited crossover may finally happen.

The latest comments coming out of the production of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027) are raising eyebrows across the fandom. Between hints about “new cast mates,” increasing use of live-action techniques, and Holland’s own past comments about wanting to join the franchise, the pieces are starting to come together.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Is Still Central to Sony’s Plans

Tom Holland has become one of the defining versions of Spider-Man for modern audiences. Since first appearing in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Holland has led a hugely successful run of Spider-Man movies connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That includes Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which became one of the biggest superhero events in recent memory thanks to its Multiverse storyline and the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

Now, Holland is preparing to return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), which arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026. While Sony and Marvel are still keeping plot details mostly secret, fans are already eager to see where Peter Parker’s story goes after the emotional ending of No Way Home.

That is part of why the Spider-Verse rumors are getting so much attention. Fans have wanted to see Holland interact with Miles Morales for years, especially after the animated movies embraced the idea that every Spider-Man exists somewhere in the Multiverse.

The Spider-Verse Movies Became a Huge Success

Before all the speculation surrounding Holland, the Spider-Verse films had already established themselves as some of the most celebrated superhero movies in recent years.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) completely changed expectations for animated comic book films with its visual style, emotional story, and introduction of Miles Morales as the franchise’s lead Spider-Man. Sony followed that with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), which expanded the Multiverse concept even further.

Now, the trilogy is heading toward its finale with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027), currently scheduled for release on June 18, 2027. The movie will continue Miles Morales’ story after the cliffhanger ending of the previous film, with Miles trying to return to his home universe while facing his multiversal counterpart, Miles G. Morales.

The cast already includes major returning stars like Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Jason Schwartzman, Daniel Kaluuya, and Nicolas Cage. Even with that stacked lineup, fans continue focusing on one missing Spider-Man actor: Tom Holland.

Sony’s New Production Update Has Fans Talking

As work on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse continues, Sony has started sharing more details about the film’s production. One of the biggest recent updates came from producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller during an interview discussing the movie’s progress.

While talking about production, Lord said:

“We’re in the middle. The story’s wonderful. We have great collaborators. We brought on Alice Brooks to DP the show, and she’s shooting it virtually, which is really exciting. And some great new cast mates. Sorry to be so coy.”

That final comment immediately grabbed fans’ attention.

The producers never directly mentioned Holland, but many viewers quickly connected the dots. Holland remains the only major live-action Spider-Man actor who has not appeared in the Spider-Verse franchise in some form.

Meanwhile, Across the Spider-Verse already opened the door for more live-action connections. Donald Glover appeared as Aaron Davis/The Prowler in a live-action sequence set inside Spider Society headquarters. At the same time, archived footage featuring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield was also used in the movie.

The Live-Action Teases Keep Growing

Another major clue surfaced earlier this year when reports revealed Sony Animation had brought cinematographer Alice Brooks onto the project in a special role. Production updates suggested Brooks was helping develop new virtual camera techniques not previously used in the series.

That immediately led fans to wonder whether Beyond the Spider-Verse could include even more live-action material.

The franchise has already blended animation with live-action footage before, and Holland’s Spider-Man feels like an obvious candidate if Sony wants to expand that concept further.

Interestingly, Holland has technically crossed into Sony’s separate Spider-Man universe before. In the post-credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), Eddie Brock and Venom briefly saw Holland’s Peter Parker on television after his identity became public.

Holland has also openly said he wants to appear in the Spider-Verse movies. Back in 2022, he admitted he was simply waiting for the phone call.

Why This Crossover Feels More Likely Than Ever

Part of what makes these rumors so exciting is that the Spider-Verse movies have already referenced Holland directly. In Across the Spider-Verse, Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara referenced the events of No Way Home, joking about “the little nerd back on Earth-199999.”

At the time, many fans treated it like a simple Easter egg. Now, though, it increasingly feels like Sony may have been planting seeds for something bigger.

The biggest question now is how large Holland’s role could become if he actually appears. Sony could easily keep it as a quick cameo, similar to Maguire and Garfield’s appearances in the previous movie. But because Holland is still actively playing Spider-Man in live-action films, there is also a chance Sony will give him a larger role alongside Miles Morales.

If that happens, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse could end up delivering one of the franchise’s biggest moments yet.
