Fans are showing contempt for the new Ahsoka Tano redesign.

Ahsoka Tano first appeared in the Star Wars canon almost 20 years ago. Since then, after years in the animated space and a transition into live-action, the former Jedi Padawan of Anakin Skywalker has become one of the most beloved characters in the franchise’s history. It wasn’t always that way, though, but after being part of some major canonical events, the togruta is a key face of Star Wars‘ almost five-decade-long history.
Even though Ashley Eckstein originated and voiced Ahsoka in animated projects like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Tales of the Jedi, it was Rosario Dawson who brought live-action Ahsoka to life. With an initial appearance in The Mandalorian Season 2, the character went on to appear in The Book of Boba Fett, and eventually headline her own series created by Dave Filoni–now co-President of Lucasfilm.

With the second season of Ahsoka coming “later this year,” the character will once again be back front and center. However, a Star Wars Day reveal has sparked major controversy online–and it is all about Ahsoka Tano’s new redesign.
A Nostalgic Design With a Modern Twist
Hot Toys, the premium figure manufacturer known for its hyper-detailed, screen-accurate designs, recently unveiled a new version of Ahsoka Tano inspired by her early days in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. While the character remains one of the franchise’s most beloved heroes, this particular release has quickly become a lightning rod for criticism online.
The figure itself draws directly from Ahsoka’s original Padawan appearance, first seen when she debuted alongside Anakin Skywalker. Complete with her early outfit and signature dual lightsabers, the collectible aims to recreate the look that longtime fans will instantly recognize.

However, there’s one major difference that has set this release apart: rather than replicating the stylized animation of The Clone Wars, Hot Toys opted for a realistic interpretation. The figure appears to be modeled after Ariana Greenblatt’s live-action Ahsoka.
For collectors, this blending of animation-inspired design with lifelike detail is nothing new—Hot Toys has built its reputation on realism. But in this case, it’s precisely that approach that has fueled the backlash.

Why Fans Are Pushing Back
At the center of the controversy is Ahsoka’s original costume. When the character first appeared in The Clone Wars, her outfit—featuring a cropped top and short skirt—drew criticism from some viewers who felt it was an odd choice for a young Padawan learner.
That conversation isn’t new. Over time, Lucasfilm updated Ahsoka’s look, giving her a more practical and age-appropriate design in later seasons. Many fans saw that evolution as a positive step forward for the character. And when young Ahsoka Tano, played by Ariana Greenblatt, appeared in the first season of Ahsoka on Disney+, that updated look was carried into live-action

By returning to the earlier outfit—and presenting it in a highly realistic form and seemingly enlarging her breasts—Hot Toys has reopened that debate. On social media, fans have expressed concern and dismay at this new design of the famous Star Wars character.
One post on X reads:
Did nobody at Hot Toys think this through? You now have a realistic depiction of a teenage actress in a boob-tube. The Ahsoka show gave her a new outfit for THIS SPECIFIC REASON.

Another post expanded on why this redesign is wrong on many levels:
Breaking my social media avoidance today due to Maul spoilers to say YES. Yes yes yes yes yes. That new Hot Toys reveal is so gross. Lots of weird ethical things happening there!! If Ariana signed off on it, that may help its case, but doesn’t change the fact that her 15 year old likeness is being used on a nearly revealing body in a skimpy costume that the actress never even wore!…especially given the history of her character design and….not happy about it. And not a fan. Bad move @hottoysofficial and @Disney @Lucasfilm Licensing

The following post echoed the above sentiment, saying:
i’m not understanding the disconnect on this discourse. these are meant to be the same outfit from the same point in the timeline. her lekku and headpiece are exactly the same. Dave Filoni updated her look in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi to make it more age appropriate and practical.
a child shouldn’t be on a battlefield wearing a tube top and mini skirt. her outfit should actually protect and cover her body.
Hot Toys already made the updated live action Ahsoka look too, so it doesn’t even make sense that they made this figure.
this character is 14 years old. if you’re defending this costume design or this figure’s exaggerated body you’re insane.

A Broader Conversation in the Fandom
While the reaction has been mixed, the situation highlights a larger discussion within the Star Wars community. As the franchise continues to expand across animation, live-action, and merchandise, decisions about how characters are represented carry more weight than ever.
Ahsoka Tano, in particular, has undergone one of the most dramatic evolutions in the saga. Once a divisive addition when she first appeared, she has since become a fan-favorite figure, appearing as a crucial character in Star Wars Rebels and even making the jump to live-action in recent years. That growth is part of why some fans feel protective over how she’s portrayed—especially when it comes to depictions of her younger self.

The Force of Fan Feedback
Whether Hot Toys responds to the criticism or stays the course, the conversation surrounding this release is a clear reminder: in the world of Star Wars, even a single collectible can spark a galaxy-wide debate.
