Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser closed in September 2023 after a run of just over a year, and in the months since, the building that housed it has been the subject of more conversation than the experience itself generated during most of its operational life.

The two-night immersive hotel experience at Walt Disney World was genuinely ambitious — a fully realized narrative voyage aboard the Halcyon starliner, with role-playing missions, interactive characters, themed dining, and a level of world-building that earned real admiration from guests who experienced it.
What it could not overcome was a price point that made it inaccessible to most of the Disney audience, and Josh D’Amaro, then Disney Parks Chairman, later acknowledged directly that the concept “didn’t work commercially.” The building itself, a striking structure designed to sell the illusion of boarding a starship, has sat in a state of transition since the closure.
Disney confirmed in 2025 that it would be converted into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative division responsible for designing and building Disney’s parks and attractions around the world. A second Notice of Commencement filed recently for the project confirms that the conversion has entered a new phase of construction work, and the significance of that expansion for the future of Walt Disney World is worth understanding clearly.
What the Second Construction Permit Tells Us

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a second Notice of Commencement for the former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser building. The new permit lists Balfour Beatty Construction as the contractor, with a scope of general construction. Balfour Beatty was also named in the first Notice of Commencement filed for this project in August 2025, making this a continuation of the same construction relationship rather than a change of contractor.
Notices of Commencement are typically filed when a new contractor or new scope of work is being introduced to a project. The filing of a second major NoC suggests the Imagineering office conversion has progressed into a new and distinct phase of work. Disney has not announced an opening date or provided additional details about the conversion timeline or what the finished office space will look like.
WDI already maintains offices in Central Florida — at EPCOT and at the former STOLport site near Magic Kingdom. The addition of the Galactic Starcruiser building as a third Central Florida location represents a meaningful expansion of Imagineering’s footprint outside its Glendale, California headquarters.
Why Imagineering Needs More Central Florida Office Space Right Now

A Monsters, Inc. expansion is in development at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Magic Kingdom is in the middle of a massive transformation that includes both a Cars-themed development connected to Frontierland and a full Villains Land expansion in the park’s northwest corner. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is working toward a Tropical Americas expansion. Each of these projects requires significant creative, technical, and logistical work, and having more Imagineering capacity located close to the actual construction sites rather than operating remotely from California creates real operational advantages for teams coordinating day-to-day development work.
The Galactic Starcruiser’s Complicated Legacy

The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser story is one of the more unusual chapters in Walt Disney World history, and the building’s conversion to Imagineering offices represents its most definitive transition yet. The experience generated genuine enthusiasm from the guests who stayed aboard the Halcyon, with the storytelling ambition and character integration earning consistent praise. The financial reality was more difficult. Premium pricing that reflected the cost of producing an immersive multi-day narrative experience narrowed the audience to a fraction of what Disney’s parks typically attract, and the hotel closed well short of what would have been a commercially sustainable run.
The Halcyon’s fictional existence, however, continues in the broader Star Wars universe. A brief appearance in the trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, releasing in 2026, included the ship’s Aurebesh logo, placing the vessel in active Star Wars canon. The story of the Halcyon lives on even as the physical building that once housed it becomes something entirely different.
What the Galaxy’s Edge Timeline Shift Means for Hollywood Studios Visitors

Beyond the Starcruiser building update, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is also in the early stages of its own transition. Disney has confirmed that the Disneyland Resort version of Galaxy’s Edge will shift its timeline on April 29, 2026, moving half the land to the era of the original Star Wars trilogy. Walt Disney World has not confirmed a date for the equivalent change at Hollywood Studios.
When the timeline shift arrives at Hollywood Studios, it will bring Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa to the land for the first time since it opened in 2019. The First Order Cargo store is being rebranded as Black Spire Surplus, with its merchandise focus shifting toward the Galactic Civil War era. Oga’s Cantina will receive minor thematic updates in connection with the timeline change. For original trilogy fans, this shift will make Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios feel like a genuinely different land than it has been.
Recent physical updates to Galaxy’s Edge include a new shade structure at the Savi’s Workshop courtyard, which has been under construction since September 2025 and is now fully open. A new shaded seating area near the Toy Story Land entrance to the land has also been completed, providing additional seating to support Woody’s Lunch Box nearby and the new Popcorn and Snacks kiosk in Toy Story Land.
How All of This Affects Your Disney World Vacation
The Imagineering office conversion at the former Galactic Starcruiser building does not affect the guest-facing Walt Disney World experience directly. The building is not in an area guests access during normal park visits, and its repurposing represents a behind-the-scenes organizational change rather than a loss of any guest amenity.
What it does signal is that Disney is investing in the infrastructure needed to support an ambitious park development pipeline at Walt Disney World. The projects being developed right now — Villains Land, the Cars expansion, Tropical Americas, the Monsters, Inc. expansion at Hollywood Studios — represent some of the most significant additions the resort has seen in years. More Imagineering capacity on the ground in Central Florida supports the execution of all of them.
For guests visiting Hollywood Studios specifically, the shade structure at Savi’s Workshop and the new Galaxy’s Edge seating area are open now. The timeline shift for Galaxy’s Edge does not yet have a confirmed Hollywood Studios date, and the Walt Disney Studios Lot opens in phases through the summer.
We will continue tracking the Imagineering office conversion and the Galaxy’s Edge timeline shift at Walt Disney World as further details are confirmed.
