Marvel is heading back to set for Avengers: Doomsday (2026), with fresh reshoots now imminent — and new details reveal exactly what the studio is looking to fix.
Seven years after Avengers: Endgame (2019), Marvel is once again assembling a crossover on a massive scale. Avengers: Doomsday aims to anchor the Multiverse Saga, bringing together legacy heroes, new Avengers, and characters from across multiple timelines.

Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., is positioned as the saga’s central villain. His introduction has been comparatively light, limited to a post-credits tease in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), raising concerns about how quickly the film must establish him.
That lack of groundwork has fed wider criticism of the Multiverse Saga. Unlike Thanos, whose presence loomed across multiple phases, Doom enters a story still struggling with cohesion, a shifting roster of heroes, and no clearly defined core Avengers team.
Rumors that the film began production without a locked script only intensified those concerns. Reports of ongoing rewrites and evolving story beats have led some fans to question whether Marvel rushed the project into filming.

Marvel has since moved to course-correct. As per Thunderbolts* (2025) actor David Harbour, reshoots are set to begin soon, with insiders pointing to a more targeted approach designed to address specific weaknesses — particularly around character arcs and narrative clarity.
Marvel Targets Character Fixes in Avengers: Doomsday Reshoots
Reshoots for Avengers: Doomsday are expected to get underway imminently, with some work possibly already in motion as cast members return to London.
According to insider Daniel Richtman (via Comic Book Movie), the additional photography will primarily focus on character-driven material. The aim is to strengthen emotional beats rather than overhaul the film’s large-scale action sequences.

Despite ongoing speculation, the Russo Brothers are said to have already locked in the movie’s major set pieces. Concerns that the film lacked a complete ending appear to have been overstated, with its biggest moments firmly mapped out.
The reshoots instead appear to be focused on ensuring that character motivations, relationships, and payoffs land more clearly in a film juggling an unusually large ensemble. Notably, Avengers: Endgame also underwent heavy reshoots to improve its battle scenes, better clarify the rules of time-travel, and improve certain character moments.
Marvel has a reputation for shooting certain scenes at the last minute – especially post-credit scenes, with The Avengers (2012) filming its iconic post-credit scene in which the team eats shawarma just one day after the film’s world premiere. Similarly, Thunderbolts* shot one of its post-credits scenes just four weeks before the movie’s release.
Attention is also shifting to Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), which is expected to pivot toward characters who play smaller roles in Avengers: Doomsday.

That structure mirrors Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame, where narrative focus was split across two films. Early reports suggest Avengers: Secret Wars will center on Multiversal Variants leading the charge against God Emperor Doom.
Leaks and Fan Theories Point to Multiversal Chaos
As anticipation builds, leaks and fan theories have begun to sketch out how Avengers: Doomsday may unfold.
One widely circulated rumor claims the film will open with a Multiversal clash involving Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine — a sequence described as one of Marvel’s most ambitious to date.

Other reports suggest Doom initially allies with the Fantastic Four to combat Incursions, only for his true agenda to emerge later. This arc would position him as both savior and ultimate threat.
Speculation also continues around returning legacy characters, including Ian McKellen’s Magneto and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, with the X-Men universe reportedly playing a key role in the next Incursion event.
Notably absent from confirmed casting are characters like Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), fueling theories that Marvel is deliberately holding major players back for Avengers: Secret Wars.
