Magic Kingdom Construction Forces Unexpected Change for Guests

One of Magic Kingdom’s most playful scavenger hunts has received a small but noticeable update.

Guests visiting Storybook Circus recently discovered that the free “Smellephants on Parade” activity now uses a slightly different map than before. The change might seem minor at first glance, but it reflects a much larger construction project taking place in this corner of the park.

For families exploring Fantasyland, the Smellephants experience has quickly become one of those hidden gems that turns a quick walk through the land into a mini adventure. Now, because of nearby refurbishment work, the hunt itself has been simplified.

The updated map reduces the number of elephants guests need to find — at least temporarily.

A Simple Activity That Quickly Became a Fan Favorite

Disney introduced the Smellephants scavenger hunt in 2024 as a free interactive experience in Storybook Circus. The concept is simple but surprisingly charming.

Guests can pick up a map and a sheet of stickers from a Cast Member near the entrance to Storybook Circus. As they explore the land, they look for colorful elephant statues placed throughout the area. Each statue represents a different scent theme inspired by classic carnival treats and desserts.

When guests locate an elephant, they place the corresponding sticker on the map. After all the locations are found, the completed activity sheet can be redeemed for a small reward sticker known as a “Whiff-sistant” badge.

It’s the type of experience that doesn’t require a Lightning Lane reservation or a long wait time. Instead, it encourages guests to slow down and notice details around the land while completing the scavenger hunt.

Recently, though, visitors noticed something missing from the activity.

The New Map Has Fewer Elephants

Due to construction taking place in Storybook Circus, two of the Smellephant statues are currently unavailable. Because of that, Disney has adjusted the map used for the activity.

The updated version of the scavenger hunt now asks guests to locate six elephants instead of eight. Two scent locations — caramel apple and cotton candy — have been removed from the checklist for now.

Those two statues normally sit near the entrance to Big Top Souvenirs. However, the area around the shop is currently hidden behind construction walls while nearby work continues.

Rather than shutting down the activity entirely, Disney opted for a much simpler solution: update the map and allow guests to complete the experience with fewer locations.

For younger guests especially, the slightly shorter hunt may actually make the activity easier to finish before heading off to the next attraction.

Construction Walls Are Changing Storybook Circus

The map change ties directly into ongoing refurbishment projects in the Storybook Circus section of Fantasyland.

Several buildings in the area have been undergoing maintenance work over the past few months. One of the biggest closures involves Pete’s Silly Sideshow, the circus-themed meet-and-greet location that previously hosted appearances from Donald Duck, Goofy, Minnie Mouse, and Daisy Duck.

The building closed earlier this year for refurbishment, with construction walls and scrim surrounding the structure shortly afterward.

Before the closure, the tent-shaped building had started showing signs of wear. Parts of the fabric covering the structure had developed tears, prompting Disney to begin repairs to the exterior.

Crews later removed portions of the tent roof as part of the refurbishment process. As of now, Disney has not announced when the location will reopen or whether the interior experience will change when work is complete.

With construction taking place around the building and nearby walkways, several areas of Storybook Circus have been temporarily blocked off.

That includes the section where the missing Smellephant statues normally stand.

Characters Have Moved Outside

Pete’s Silly Sideshow wasn’t just a building — it was also home to several circus-themed character meet-and-greet experiences.

Inside the tent, guests could meet performers like The Astounding Donaldo, The Great Goofini, Minnie Magnifique, and Daisy Fortuna.

Since the building closed for refurbishment, those characters have been greeting guests in outdoor areas throughout Storybook Circus instead.

While the meet-and-greet setting has changed, the characters themselves are still appearing regularly in the land. Guests can check the My Disney Experience app to see the most up-to-date locations and times.

The change has kept the characters available while construction continues behind the scenes.

The Scavenger Hunt Still Works the Same Way

Despite the updated map, the Smellephants activity still works the same way as before.

Guests can pick up the map near the entrance of Storybook Circus and begin searching for the remaining elephant statues around the land. Once all six are found, the completed sheet can be exchanged for the reward sticker.

The design of the map itself hasn’t changed dramatically. It simply reflects the reduced number of locations that are currently accessible.

For most families, the experience still feels the same — they just finish it a little quicker.

And once construction work wraps up and those blocked areas reopen, the missing elephants may return to the scavenger hunt.

A Small Change During a Bigger Refresh

In the grand scheme of Magic Kingdom updates, a modified scavenger hunt might seem like a small adjustment.

But it’s a good example of how Disney keeps guest experiences running even while construction projects reshape parts of the park.

Storybook Circus has always been designed as a playful corner of Fantasyland filled with interactive details, and Smellephants on Parade fits perfectly into that atmosphere.

By adjusting the activity instead of removing it completely, Disney has allowed families to continue enjoying the hunt while refurbishment work moves forward.

For now, guests exploring Storybook Circus will simply be searching for six scented elephants instead of eight.

And once the construction walls finally come down, the full herd may return to the map once again.
