For many travelers visiting Walt Disney World Resort, staying at Disney’s Contemporary Resort is more than just a hotel reservation—it’s part of the magic itself.

The iconic A-frame structure, where the monorail famously glides through the building, has stood as one of the most recognizable landmarks in Disney Parks history since opening alongside Magic Kingdom in 1971. For generations of guests, the Contemporary represents a blend of retro-futuristic design and modern Disney luxury.

But as Walt Disney World continues to evolve and refresh its properties, even beloved resorts like the Contemporary occasionally undergo necessary upgrades. And for guests planning upcoming stays, a series of new refurbishment projects may temporarily change the experience.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort Has Long Been One of Walt Disney World’s Most Iconic Destinations

Few resort hotels carry the legacy of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Located within walking distance of Magic Kingdom Park, the property has remained one of the most sought-after places to stay on Walt Disney World property for more than five decades.

Its signature design, the towering A-frame Main Tower overlooking Bay Lake, and the adjacent Bay Lake Tower villas have made it a favorite among Disney Vacation Club members and longtime fans alike.

Over the years, the resort has seen numerous updates to maintain its modern appeal. From room refurbishments to updated dining experiences and lobby refreshes, Disney has continually invested in keeping the Contemporary aligned with guest expectations.

Most recently, refurbishment work has been taking place in phases across the property since September 2024, affecting select areas including the atrium, Bay Lake Tower, and the Main Tower.

While updates are a common part of the Disney experience, some guests are now beginning to notice that the scale of the work is expanding.

Guests Have Begun Noticing Construction Activity and Temporary Changes Around the Resort

Visitors staying at the Contemporary in recent months have reported construction activity occurring during daytime hours throughout the resort.

These updates have included maintenance work in several locations across the property. Guests may occasionally see construction equipment or hear work taking place as crews continue improvements.

In addition, some amenities at Bay Lake Tower remain temporarily unavailable while maintenance is underway.

The Bay Cove Pool, Cove Bar, water play area, and whirlpool spa at Bay Lake Tower are currently closed as part of the ongoing work. However, guests still have access to the Main Pool, water play area, and whirlpool spa located at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

While these adjustments are typically routine for large resort properties, Disney has now confirmed additional work that could impact how guests move around the resort.

New Refurbishment Projects Will Temporarily Change How Guests Navigate the Resort

Beginning in late March 2026, several areas of Disney’s Contemporary Resort will see additional refurbishment activity.

From March 30 through May 1, 2026, the Skyway Bridge connecting Bay Lake Tower and the Contemporary Main Tower will be closed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The bridge will reopen each day after 5 p.m. and remain accessible during evenings and weekends.

Because of this closure, guests may need to use alternate walking paths while traveling between the two buildings during daytime hours.

Disney has also confirmed that exterior maintenance on the Main Tower will begin March 23, 2026.

This work may temporarily affect views from various locations around the resort and could require alternate travel paths in certain areas. Guests staying at the hotel may also hear construction noise during daytime hours.

Additionally, exterior elevator landing repairs will take place at Bay Lake Tower from late March through late May 2026, continuing the broader refurbishment efforts across the resort.

Disney has stated that guests may see or hear construction activity while work is underway, though the company typically schedules projects during daytime hours to minimize disruption.

Online Reactions Show Disney Fans Divided Over the Ongoing Resort Changes

As with many changes across Walt Disney World, the news has sparked conversation among fans online.

On platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, some guests expressed understanding that refurbishment work is necessary to maintain aging resort infrastructure. Others, however, voiced frustration over encountering construction during what they expected to be a premium Disney resort stay.

One Reddit user wrote that construction projects at Disney resorts can sometimes feel “never-ending,” while another noted that ongoing updates are often what keeps the resorts looking fresh for future visitors.

The discussions reflect the passionate connection Disney fans have with iconic locations like the Contemporary.

What These Changes Could Mean for Guests Planning Future Disney World Trips

For travelers planning upcoming stays at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, the refurbishment projects are unlikely to shut down major parts of the hotel, but they may require some adjustments.

Guests should expect occasional construction noise during the day and potential changes to walking routes between Bay Lake Tower and the Main Tower while the Skyway Bridge is closed during weekday hours.

Disney has not announced any long-term closures related to the work, and many amenities across the resort remain available to guests.

Refurbishments are a regular part of maintaining Disney’s resort portfolio, especially for historic properties like the Contemporary that have welcomed guests for more than half a century.

Still, these updates serve as a reminder that even the most beloved Disney locations are always evolving.
