It’s a double edged sword. On one hand we got the disgusting Pooh horror treatment, but on the other hand Sherlock Holmes has benefited. So far nobody has made a real attempt at using the characters, I’m waiting for when someone does. Can someone other than Disney succeed with their characters when the modern Disney hasn’t been able to for years?
I think that it’s interesting that so far what has come out of the copyright loss has been mostly violent, crass and ridiculous trash serving as an attempt to somehow tarnish the original characters. If the powers that be will not prevent the loss of copyright for things that are icons of popular culture they should at least make an effort to limit use to that which won’t disrespect the source. I guess that’s arguably relative though.
Disney Is in no lack of Money, they are swallowing every franchise they can and often producing quick hot garbage with them for a cash grab. They do not need or deserve your support. If they want more money they can simply make new stuff like everyone else does. These laws exist for a reason and everyone is subject to them, they are not special. It’s already gross that their army of lawyers managed to let only steamboat Willie’s version of Mickey to become public domain instead of the character as a whole, but I guess when you got infinite money the law doesn’t matter anymore.
They should be able to hold onto their property! If they NEVER want it to enter the public domain they should have that right. They came up with &designed it. It belongs to them!
Disney is long dead. And contrary to Citizens United, corporations aren’t people. Corporations shouldn’t be able to hold rights to things in perpetuity. Any artists who could lay claim to any of those characters are dead. Stop making arguments in support of the “poor” multi-billion dollar companies. They don’t need your help.
As Disney is notoriously associated with being a family friendly company I think anybuse of the characters outside of the Disney domain should respectfully reflect this sentiment. Disney is about dreams and.magic coming true, it should remain so. We have enough violence in the world, we should be able to protect the Disney sentiment..
Disney hasn’t had a problem taking from the public domain since Walt used “Turkey in the Straw” in Steamboat Willie. But when it comes time to give back, they’ll fight tooth and nail to avoid it as long as possible.
I want to see Donald Duck, the flying mouse 1934, little Hiawatha, the three little pigs 1933, enter into the public domain so that I can respectfully use the Donald duck as Walt Disney used back in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s which they take place in, I would create Donald duck cartoons either limited 2d or CGI animation taking place during the 1930s great depression, allow Donald duck to smoke cigarettes and cigars, and show other wacky uncensored Donald duck future cartoons with the bee stinging Donald ducks feathery rear end or fighting the robot butler, the jack in the box and bring some PG rated profanity and physical punishment in Donald duck cartoons. Yes I would make horror Donald duck cartoons but keep it fun and have funny jokes. I would make a sequel to Donald duck cartoons like modern inventions, window cleaners, the clock watcher, also I would do more sequels to the three little pigs, the flying mouse, little Hiawatha cartoons, and make RPG maker video games on Donald duck adventures. I don’t know if I’ll ever make them as I make my own critter doodles cartoons with my own music I made on my PC and make my stories as I’m a cartoon artist.
Mixed feelings,.,
Some state that it is ok, since Walt did borrow from other previous ideas : characters..but from the borrowed, inspired, characters, were they as iconic and popular as Walt Disneys characters???
A while bac, I was giving passed a Mexican restaurant , part of a small local chain, and a costumed Mickey Mouse was out front waving people in… I was actually somewhat repulsed!!!
Nothing about the business or promotion had anything to do with Mickey or Disney..
I don’t think the public should be allowed to turn innocent children movies in to horror movies. I am discussed with the horror movie Winnie the Pooh. Pooh is very special to me and it makes me mad to think of him as a murderer.
Sheila, for crying out loud, the children don’t care and neither should you, just don’t watch the movie, the original media still exist for everyone to enjoy 🙄
Oh greedy Disney losing their own character foundations because they are too busy buying up franchises to ruin. I don’t think they care.
They should encourage people to love dogs, but this move likely is deliberate. Especially China has influence or is involved.
The black and white Disney cartoons are often considered controversial.
I do think they should come up with a new dog or similar one.
I am going to say “NO” as to me it’s like losing a child. I have some experience in that arena and that is how I feel about Mickey, Pluto, Winnie….ect. losing their copyright protections. These characters are the children of Disney and Disney has done it best to keep them protected. Wish there was a way to keep more from happening
Disney corporation is more interested in Star Wars, Pixar stuff, etc. and I wonder how much they really care. My challenge to them is to re-release the wonderful movies like Bambi, Lady and The Tramp, etc. and see how the public reacts to them. Lots of $$$$ to be made with most costs covered. But I doubt if it’ll be taken. Oh well….
When “Sreamboat Wilie” went into the public domain, did we see an influx of creativity after that?? Hell no. This has nothing to do with being creative and all about trying to bastardize beloved characters with terrible horror spoofs and corporate banking commercials.
A)Obviously these characters should enter public domain because that’s the law. The Disney company didn’t even make these characters. The artists who made them are dead. Disney has been avoiding and extending this delay which is a lot more than any other artist gets.
B) Disney uses public domain concepts all the time. How much Disney media includes a play on Frankenstein’s monster? I can think of a few holiday specials easily with that concept. Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, and Aladdin are all public domain and they have several movies dedicated to making these – despite them grossly changing the original stories to be borderline offensive of the originals.
C. A lot of people don’t know what is in public domain, for Disney characters they see it as seeing a beloved character be destroyed. They don’t see it as we can have Disney’s Robin Hood, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and the 50 other Robin Hood movies which all tell a similar story and many different variations have been considered “beloved” over the years. What if Netflix put out a really great rendition of Steamboat Willie?
D) Truuuust me, people were already doing bad things to pooh bear before they lost copyright, a shitty horror flick is honestly not that egregious, and it’s not like anyone forced you to buy a ticket and go see it.
E) Losing copyright doesn’t mean Disney has to stop making media with those characters. They can still use them and profit off of them, just like they always have.
Its not like Disney doesn’t have the money or the Lawyers to keep upwith coppyrights. No I don’t wanna see any Disney version of these characters wind up in a Morgan& Morgan commerical,
That said they still have “modern” versions so itsnot the end of everything.

HELL NO!!! if those other idiots can’t come up with their own creation without stealing someone else’s, they should not be in the business at all.
Matt Wasser
Many of Disney’s animated films are based on things in the public domain.

Then they should never have been allowed to make any princess movies, since they were all rips of European fairy tales.

Disney has used many things it didn’t create, so it’s fine.

No they shouldn’t be changed or modernized. They were dreams in Walt Disney’s mind and had meaning. They are all part of the magic of Disney

Oregon can go back to using Donald Duck as their mascot and there’s nothing Disney can do about it.
