The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) stands on the verge of one of its most pivotal leadership transitions in decades. With CEO Bob Iger’s tenure nearing its end, the race to succeed him has intensified, placing two of Disney’s most influential executives in the spotlight–Josh D’Amaro and Dana Walden.

At the same time, another key change within the Disney Experiences division signals a new era of financial and creative leadership across the company’s global parks.

The Road to Replacing Bob Iger

As Iger’s retirement approaches, the question of who will lead Disney into its next chapter looms large. Reports suggest the succession has narrowed to what some are calling a “two-horse race” between Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, and Dana Walden, Co-Chair of Disney Entertainment.

While both are respected across the company for their leadership and expertise, their strengths lie in distinct areas, one rooted in immersive guest experiences, the other in content creation and media strategy.

D’Amaro’s journey through the Disney ranks has been one of dedication and deep operational knowledge. From his early days at Disneyland Resort to overseeing the entire Disney Experiences division, he’s developed a reputation as a “cast member’s leader,” someone who connects with both employees and park guests alike. Under his stewardship, Disney Parks, Resorts, and Cruise Line have delivered record-setting profits, even amid global economic challenges.

For many within the company and the Disney fandom, that’s enough to make him the favorite. D’Amaro’s “magic-first” philosophy–emphasizing storytelling, immersion, and guest satisfaction–has helped reposition the parks as the emotional and financial heart of The Walt Disney Company.

Meanwhile, Dana Walden, who co-leads Disney Entertainment with Alan Bergman, brings experience in television, streaming, and studio management. She’s credited with steering major entertainment initiatives and revitalizing parts of Disney’s media empire. Yet, with Disney’s streaming platforms still seeking consistent profitability, Walden’s candidacy carries both promise and risk.

The Disney Board, led by Chairman James P. Gorman, is expected to make a final decision in early 2026. With Iger’s contract expiring in December that year, the chosen successor will have just months to shadow one of the most iconic CEOs in corporate history before officially taking the reins.

A Major Move in Disney Parks Leadership

Even as the CEO race unfolds, another significant leadership change is taking shape within Disney Experiences–one that underscores how vital the Experiences division has become to Disney’s future.

Disney announced that Kevin Lansberry, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Disney Experiences, will retire in February 2026 after an incredible 39-year career with the company. His successor will be Michael Moriarty, currently President and Managing Director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

Moriarty brings nearly two decades of Disney leadership experience, with an impressive background that bridges both creative and financial expertise. Before leading Hong Kong Disneyland, he served as CFO for Walt Disney Imagineering and at the resort itself, as well as in key financial roles at Walt Disney World.

Under Moriarty’s leadership, Hong Kong Disneyland achieved one of its most transformative milestones–the opening of World of Frozen, a first-of-its-kind themed land that has elevated the resort’s global profile. His appointment as CFO for Disney Experiences signals a strong focus on financial precision balanced with creative expansion, two pillars central to Disney’s ongoing success.

Josh D’Amaro praised Moriarty’s global perspective and business acumen, stating that his strategic insight and understanding of Disney’s diverse portfolio will be essential as the company continues to grow and innovate worldwide.

“Michael Moriarty brings a deep understanding of our long-term strategy to broaden the reach and impact of Disney Experiences,” D’Amaro explained in a statement, via The Hollywood Reporter. “His global perspective and leadership will help guide us through an exciting chapter of growth, reaching new fans in new places and on new platforms.”

Disney has yet to name Moriarty’s successor at Hong Kong Disneyland, but his move to the company’s senior financial ranks comes at a critical time. As Disney navigates leadership transitions, the future of the Experiences segment will play a defining role in shaping the next era of The Walt Disney Company.

A New Chapter Begins

Between the search for Disney’s next CEO and the reshuffling of its theme park and resorts leadership, it’s clear that the company is laying the foundation for its next generation of storytellers and strategists. Whether the future belongs to D’Amaro’s guest-centric vision, Walden’s entertainment expertise, or the rising influence of leaders like Moriarty, Disney’s next era is aiming to be one of renewal and innovation.
