Tropical Storm Imelda’s Impacts Will Be Felt at Disney World Starting This Afternoon

Nearly four months into hurricane season, and things in Florida have been pretty quiet. Most of the storms that have formed in the Atlantic so far this season have made a dramatic turn and missed the Sunshine State.

On Saturday night, Hurricane Humberto increased its strength from a Category 3 to a Category 5 hurricane. However, that storm will remain well out in the Atlantic Ocean and, later this week, make a dramatic turn and head back toward Europe.

For those in Central Florida on a Disney World vacation, the newest tropical system could cause some issues later today and into Monday morning. Tropical Depression Nine is currently forming over the Bahamas in the Caribbean and is expected to increase in strength to a tropical storm later today. When this tropical depression turns into a Tropical Storm, it will be named Imelda.

Tropical Storm Imelda is expected to intensify and strengthen and become a Category 1 hurricane by later today. However, there is some good news for those on vacation at Disney World.

The good news for Central Florida is that the storm is expected to remain off Florida’s east coast before heading north. However, the storm will impact Disney World later today and into tomorrow.

Guests in Central Florida should expect heavy rain and wind later this afternoon and into the evening. The wind will not be tropical storm force wind, but people in the area will be able to feel it.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is scheduled tonight at Magic Kingdom, which could be impacted by the weather. While the impact won’t be that overwhelming at Disney World, guests at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort will see the worst of Imelda.

Florida’s East Coast is expected to see one to three inches of rain, and in some locations, isolated five inches. The East Coast will also experience rip tide currents and strong winds. Most of Florida’s East Coast is under a Tropical Storm warning.

So, while Imelda won’t directly hit the state, Florida is still expected to feel the effects of the tropical storm. Batten down the hatches, hurricane season is still with us.
