One Disney park is officially overhauling the iconic exterior of its Space Mountain roller coaster, and guests are still allowed to ride during the renovations. Here’s everything we know about the ongoing project.

Space Mountain first opened in Tomorrowland at Walt Disney World Resort‘s Magic Kingdom Park in 1975. Disneyland Resort debuted its version two years later in 1977, followed by versions at Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Park (Paris), and Hong Kong Disneyland. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris Resort have since reimagined their versions of the indoor roller coaster as the Star Wars-inspired Hyperspace Mountain.

The latest changes to the iconic Disney roller coaster are happening at Disneyland Paris Resort. On August 28, X (formerly known as Twitter) user @DLPReport shared these photos of crews working on the exterior of Space Mountain in Discoveryland at Disneyland Park:

Much of the colorful structure now appears covered in beige, gray, and white primer. It’s unclear whether Disneyland Paris Resort plans to change the color scheme of Space Mountain during this refurbishment, or whether crews are simply freshening up the existing palette.

According to PixieDustdlp, crews are also installing new exterior lighting on Space Mountain during this maintenance period. At night, Disney Park guests will notice it illuminating the iconic Discoveryland structure.

Fortunately for Disneyland Paris Resort guests, this construction project hasn’t affected the experience inside Space Mountain. The Discoveryland roller coaster is operating normally during the refurbishment.

Disneyland Paris Resort isn’t the only Disney park reimagining its version of Space Mountain. Tokyo Disneyland permanently closed its original indoor roller coaster in July 2024 and is currently rebuilding a refreshed version that is expected to reopen in 2027.
