Six Flags Magic Mountain disappointed countless California theme park guests on Monday, September 8. After confirming on its official website that the Los Angeles vacation destination would be open, families arrived to find locked gates, empty ticket booths, and confused custodial workers wondering why guests were trying to enter the shuttered theme park.
In the days leading up to Monday, September 8, the Six Flags mobile app and Six Flags Magic Mountain website allegedly showed that the theme park would be open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Theme park fans were surprised, as the Southern California amusement destination often shifts to a weekend-only operating schedule after Labor Day. However, Six Flags Magic Mountain’s website states that the park will be open on Mondays from September 15 onward, so guests assumed that the operating hours for Monday, September 8, were accurate.

Unfortunately, Redditor u/Pippinitis was one of countless guests who arrived at Six Flags Magic Mountain on Monday morning to find an empty parking lot and locked turnstiles.
Okay somebody screwed up at SixFlags.com
“The reinstatement of Mondays on the schedule was such a surprise, that even the SFMM staff didn’t know about it…,” the theme park guest wrote. “Nobody’s here except the cleaning guys power washing the place… a few people who drove a few hours to get here were particularly upset…”
The guest took a screenshot of their Six Flags app, which showed that the park was supposed to be open that day. Later, the app had been updated to reflect that Six Flags Magic Mountain was closed. View the before-and-after screenshots below.

Some theme park fans argued that the “Thrill Capital of the World” was never supposed to be open on Monday. However, the Redditor wasn’t the only one who saw the incorrect operating issues on the Six Flags website and mobile app. Some guests even purchased date-based tickets for September 8, 2025.
“It might say that now, but when I and the other confused visitors arrived, we compared our apps and it said the park was open at 10:30 am…,” they recalled.

“I have an old legacy membership, so I’m just out a little bit of gas money,” the guest continued. “There were other folks who drove hours and took a day off work or pulled their kids out of school and they were visibly very upset. For those who had new MVP passes, I suggested they drive another hour to Knott’s since it’s open today. The ones who bought daily tickets online (for today!!!) pretty much got the shaft even if they could redeem them later.”
Six Flags Magic Mountain hasn’t issued a public statement about the change in park operations on Monday. The next time to experience X2, Twisted Colossus, Tatsu, and other popular attractions is on Friday, September 12. The park’s annual Halloween event, Fright Fest, begins on Friday, September 19.
