Six Flags Great America, located in Gurnee, Illinois, has announced the indefinite closure of one of its most popular roller coasters, the Raging Bull. The Midwestern theme park has given fans one “last chance to ride” before the attraction officially shuts down later this month.

Raging Bull debuted at Six Flags Great America in 1999. The park boasts that it’s “the world’s first hyper-twister roller coaster,” sending guests down a nearly-mile-long track at roughly 73 miles per hour. The roller coaster travels through the entire Southwest Territory neighborhood of the theme park, and towers as high as 202 feet.

Unfortunately, Midwestern theme park guests don’t have much time to experience this fan-favorite roller coaster. On Tuesday, Six Flags Great America announced that the Raging Bull will temporarily close for repainting. Visitors will have a “last chance to ride” on August 18 before the Southwest Territory roller coaster shuts down indefinitely.

Six Flags Great America hasn’t announced a reopening date for Raging Bull or confirmed whether it will be available before the end of the 2025 season. With a 5,057-foot-long track–one of the longest in the park–it certainly won’t be a quick paint job.

It’s also unclear whether Raging Bull will return before Fright Fest begins on September 13. The annual Halloween event will take over Six Flags Great America until the theme park closes for the season on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

Summer hours continue at the Illinois theme park until August 18, at which point the park will only be open on weekends and select weekdays. Check the official Six Flags Great America website for hours and operating information.

This was a big year for Six Flags Great America, which debuted its brand-new Dive Coaster, Wrath of Rakshasa, in May. The County Fair roller coaster features a unique moving storage system for passengers’ personal belongings, unlike anything else at the Illinois theme park.
