In March 2025, Walt Disney World Resort announced a massive modernization of the Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin attraction in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom. The upgrade promised interactive targets, improved handled blasters with different laser colors for each guest, an updated ride photo, and new ride vehicles with screens for live score tracking and real-time updates.

When it reopens, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will also feature a brand-new scene introducing Buddy, a robot character created by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios. The audio-animatronic will welcome guests to Star Command and offer interactive instructions on using the handheld laser blasters.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin debuted at the Magic Kingdom in 1998, and Walt Disney Imagineers later created versions for Disneyland Park, Tokyo Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, Shanghai Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. Although the interactive Toy Story (1995) ride is still popular among Walt Disney World Resort guests, it’s faced increased scrutiny in recent years for difficulty shooting the stationary laser guns, a low-quality ride photo, and the struggling Buzz Lightyear animatronic in the queue.

Sunday, August 3, 2025, was the final day to ride the original Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom Park. Walt Disney World Resort has said the new attraction will reopen sometime in 2026, but hasn’t announced an exact date.
