Disney+ launched in 2019, and while the streaming service was late to the game compared to big competitors like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, Disney has been able to carve out its own corner in the market. This is primarily thanks to Disney’s unparalleled collection of content, which includes everything from Star Wars and Marvel to classic animated princess fairytales.
Disney+ also serves as the go-to destination for home premieres of recently released movies. Last year’s Moana 2 debuted to huge numbers when it released on Disney+ earlier this year, and this year’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake is bound to do the same when it joins the platform in September.
Recent entries into the Marvel Cinematic Universe are also available to stream on Disney+, such as Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*.
Alongside movies, Disney+ features a wide selection of television and documentaries. While Disney+ is typically associated with princesses like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, National Geographic also calls the platform home.
Disney+ has also expanded in major ways, most notably this summer, when it merged with Hulu. The iconic green-tinted streaming platform underwent ownership changes, allowing Disney to take a stake in the company.
Earlier this year, CEO Bob Iger confirmed plans to integrate Hulu fully into Disney+. This means that the standalone Hulu app will be phased out. Users can expect to see Hulu fade away sometime next year, though exact dates have yet to be shared.
