When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s never a shortage of bold creative swings — and sometimes those swings leave fans reeling. Marvel Studios is no stranger to retooling characters, shifting storylines, or removing fan favorites. But the latest decision has the fandom buzzing for all the wrong reasons.

Thor has been one of Marvel’s most reliable powerhouses for years, wielding his hammer (or axe) to help lead the Avengers through cosmic-scale battles. Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal has brought everything from mythic gravitas to laugh-out-loud humor. Yet, according to some reports, Disney and Marvel have decided it’s time for a significant change — one that’s set to kill off Thor as we know him.

Spoilers ahead!

Where the MCU’s Main Players Stand

Thor – After the events of Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), Thor set off with his adopted daughter, Love, embarking on new adventures. His arc felt oddly open-ended — not quite a farewell, but not the setup for another solo outing. The decision to “kill off” this iteration of Thor could mean a passing of the mantle, a time jump, or a reinvention.

Spider-Man – Following Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Peter Parker was left alone, his identity erased from the memories of those closest to him. This leaves him free to start fresh — and potentially return as a more street-level hero before being pulled into cosmic chaos again.

Guardians of the GalaxyGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) closed out James Gunn’s trilogy, sending the original lineup separately. Rocket now leads a new crew, but most heavy hitters (like Star-Lord and Drax) are gone from active duty.

Thunderbolts – Marvel’s anti-hero team, comprised of characters like Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, and Red Guardian, made their first appearance fighting the Void in May 2025. They’re set to play a massive role in the lead-up to Doomsday, operating in morally gray areas the Avengers can’t.

Hulk – Bruce Banner’s role has been minimal since Avengers: Endgame (2019), though She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022) revealed he’s now a father to Skaar. This could set the stage for a passing of the gamma-powered torch.

Fantastic FourMarvel’s first family just made their official MCU debut on July 25 this year, and they’re heavily rumored to be pivotal to the multiversal war brewing. At the end of the movie, we get to see a sneak peek at Dr. Doom with young Franklin. The MCU seems to be moving toward families and complicated stories taking the stage. Avengers: Doomsday is sure to be unlike any other previous Avengers movie.

The Disney+ Marvel Expansion

Marvel’s streaming series have become just as essential as the big-screen films, fleshing out side characters and setting up the next wave of heroes and villains.

Agatha All Along—A spin-off from WandaVision (2021), this show follows the fan-favorite witch Agatha Harkness. It dives deeper into magic and mischief and ties into the larger mystical side of the MCU.

WandaVision – The series that kicked off Marvel’s Disney+ era, WandaVision blended sitcom parody with superhero drama, ending with Wanda becoming the Scarlet Witch.

Ironheart – Following her debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), Riri Williams takes center stage as a genius inventor who creates her own high-tech armor, echoing Iron Man’s legacy.

Loki – After its second season, the Loki show has cemented itself as one of the MCU’s most crucial shows, redefining the rules of time and introducing the concept of branching timelines that will feed into the Doomsday event.

Eyes of Wakanda – This series explores Wakanda’s warriors as they venture beyond their homeland, bringing more cultural and political intrigue to the MCU.

Wonder Man – Centered on Simon Williams, a Hollywood stuntman turned superhero, Wonder Man will mix meta-humor with classic Marvel heroics.

The Undead Arrive: Marvel Zombies

Perhaps one of the most anticipated upcoming projects, Marvel Zombies (2025), takes inspiration from the comics and expands on the alternate timeline glimpsed in What If…?. The zombie infection has claimed some of Marvel’s most iconic characters in this grim universe, creating a horror-tinged spin on the superhero formula.

The show promises to push the limits of MCU storytelling, with heroes and villains fighting to survive or embracing their new undead forms. Here’s a look at some characters expected to join the series.

Heroes & Villains in Marvel Zombies

While Marvel hasn’t confirmed the roster, rumors point to several familiar faces appearing in Marvel Zombies when it premieres in October 2025.

John Walker (“failed” Captain America) – Last seen in Thunderbolts (2025) as a troubled anti-hero. His wavering moral compass could make for an interesting storyline in the Marvel Zombies TV show, as well as when he reappears as a major leader in Avengers: Doomsday (2026)

Namor – After his debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), the Sub-Mariner’s presence could introduce ocean-based threats and strategies.

Melina Vostokoff – The spy matriarch from Black Widow (2021) could bring brains to balance the brawn.

Baron Zemo – It’s been a while since Zemo’s last appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, and his cunning, calculating nature makes him a wild card in any setting. In a zombie-ravaged world, he could just as easily be orchestrating survival strategies from the shadows as he could be stalking the living as one of the infected.

Black Panther (Shuri) – As Wakanda’s protector, Shuri could combine intelligence and combat prowess to lead the living.

Valkyrie – The ruler of New Asgard could rally survivors, wielding leadership and sheer strength.

Thor’s Deadly Return

In the Marvel Zombies universe, the God of Thunder’s rumored transformation into an undead version of himself would be nothing short of chilling. Stripped of his heroic purpose and driven only by the hunger of the infected, this Thor could wield Mjolnir or Stormbreaker with terrifying, uncontrollable force.

It’s a scenario that doesn’t erase him from the MCU entirely, but instead reimagines him as a nightmare version of the hero fans have followed for over a decade — a bold and unsettling way of “killing off” the Thor we know.

From Hero to Horror

In the end, Thor’s rumored role in Marvel Zombies isn’t just a wild “what if” — it’s a symbol of how far the MCU is willing to go to shake things up. By reimagining one of its most beloved heroes in such a dark and twisted way, Marvel signals that no character is truly safe from reinvention.

The road to Avengers: Doomsday (2026) is already packed with new faces, surprising alliances, and risky creative choices, but this could be one of the boldest yet. Whether fans embrace or revolt against it, one thing is certain: October 2025 will change how we see Thor — and maybe the entire MCU — forever.

And of course, it’s always nice to get a little tease return of a beloved hero or villain before a major movie like Avengers: Doomsday (2026).
