In this case, it’s cashing in on Warner and Sony off-franchise “name” films, where they can sell the character and the IP without having to create a linear sequel. (Especially now that Toy Story 4 messed up the whole works.)
And, of course, Pixar can’t very well do “Syndrome”, or “Randall”.
