It is without a doubt the worst thing for any parent to experience and I’m truly sorry it happened to a young child, but saying they need to put gates and other measures to prevent this happening again,I don’t know, maybe not taking your eyes off a young child is what would of stopped this from happening

It isn’t the facilities fault they weren’t watching their child. We have stayed at several resorts, including Disney, that have had lakes/rivers/pools/etc. and I NEVER expected anyone other than my husband and I to be responsible for my kids safety. You have to pay attention to YOUR kids!!! Especially if they have special needs and maybe have a tendency to wander off. I used leash backpacks for my kids when they were small while also holding their hands and do not regret it. Tragedy can happen in a split second. I’d rather get dirty looks for “doing too much” than sympathetic ones for not doing enough.

  3. I am very sorry for your loss. I too have a special needs child and she is never out of my sight. Parents need to pay attention to their children be they special needs or normal. PLEASE PAY MORE ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILDREN!!! Resorts are not responsible for your children

I agree with other comments, you don’t take your eyes off a child special needs or not. They are quick to run, you must watch the, @ all times. I still watch my daughter,if we’re together somewhere & shes 40+ & married. Crazy people out there, you can’t blink without watching your child.

It is very sad. Parenting is a difficult task. We ALL could probably do better at times. However, it’s ALWAYS our responsibility as parents to ensure the safety of our children. That’s not up to the resort. Small children are quick and curious. Sorry for your loss.

It’s a terrible thing. That said you have got to keep in contact whether physical or eyesight at all times in any busy place especially a child with autism or special needs. If needed they have child leashes/harness you can use. The young child looking silly is better then the look in a casket

How about you do your job as a parent and watch your kid at all times especially if they are special needs.

So sorry this happened, it is an unimaginable tragedy, and yes, if there was a fence he wouldn’t have gotten in, but if you were a responsible parent and watching your 5 YEAR OLD CHILD, autistic or otherwise, he wouldn’t have gotten in. I am sorry but there is no other way to say it.

Why is it the resorts fault that the parent was unable to watch their own child? Its a horrible tragedy, but they dont need games and fences and lifeguards. Parents just need to be responsible for their children. A non verbal autistic child should NEVER be out of your sight even at home, let alone in an unfamiliar place. Kids love water. They will always gravitate towards it.

I’ve got to agree with all the previous comments. It is only the PARENT’S responsibility to watch over THEIR CHILD wherever they are! How dare they blame the resort for their shortcomings as a parent! This whole thing makes me very angry at their attitude of innocence in this tragedy! Sounds like they just want to sue like so many whose children end up dead in Central Florida because of their own (or their parent’s) negligence!

Parents responsibility period. Very sorry for their loss, but the resort is not to blame.

I’m very sorry for their loss but the key here is the child “wandered off” so where were the parents? They have no right to suggest what should have been done to make things safe. If their child got away they should be charged with being an accessory? You don’t let a child with this kind of issue out of your sight!
