I thought #Thunderbolts* was a hit. Is it perfect? No. However, it’s far more grounded than recent MCU installments. Its strong focus on mental health and character development makes it far more accessible than projects like Secret Invasion and Eternals. It’s a cohesive film that harkens back to the early days of the MCU and effectively sets up Avengers: Doomsday and the future of the MCU.
The way it touched on mental health was a chefs kiss to me. Bob and Yelena were my favorite. If anyone sees a shirt with the “We can do it” Yelena on it, please let me know!! Lewis Pullman definitely takes after his dad, actor Bill Pullman. Fun fact! He was not originally cast. Steven Yeun was, but had to back out. Now Lewis just needs to play Bob in live actions of Bob the Builder and Spongebob to complete the set. I like how the team did not shun him in the end. A lot of people who battle depression on his level (and my) level tend to have a hard time keeping friends. People grow tired of how they think they’re choosing to be - also why I love Eeyore so much! Glad to finally see MCU connect things together finally too. Been WAY too long!!
Thunderbolts* is the most solid the sacred timeline has felt in a while, providing an adventure befitting its overlooked title characters. While it very capably dabbles in a darker tone – touching on the mental health of heroes and villains alike – it struggles to balance that dabbling with a snappy, comedic energy. As a whole left me feeling like it was a downer on the balance, it’s at least the good downer, filled with characters I’m looking forward to seeing again. The MCU, for now, is back on track.
As someone who hasn’t seen most of the Marvel films (including most of the Captain America films), I felt like it was easy enough to follow without some background info!
@Courtney_Raptive While not a stand alone film - I agree. I have seen all the MCU films and it helps when you know the background of the characters (each of these characters are flawed in some way - that is what makes the team so compelling), but it was not essential for this film, as they went a different direction with each character. The overall experience was good and did a good job tying in the future films.
@tgree9369 It made me want to finally watch Black Widow to know more about Yelena! Though I did watch the Hawkeye series and I got a bit of background of her there.

@Courtney_Raptive Same! I’ve yet to experience superhero fatigue like many others. I’m literally excited for every project that the MCU has to offer.
Agreed! I’m so excited for Doomsday now!

I won’t lie — I was crying in the theater and I was so glad Bob wasn’t abandoned! Yelena has such a sweet side through her dark humor and I love it.
I thought the acting was so good, and I loved Lewis Pullman in Lessons in Chemistry as well.
Havent seen it yet

I don’t know about Thunderbolts but everything I’m seeing about this film is making me want to go see it!
It’s the best film (in the MCU realm) in a long while! Helps set up Doomsday and the Fantastic 4 will lead you right into Doomsday.

@Courtney_Raptive watch Antman & the Wasp - that will give you the background on Ghost! Oh and Falcon and Winter Soldier for John Walker backstory.
