As someone who not only cosplays the character but has the name as well, I have to say overall, Dawson’s performance of the Ahsoka Tano character needs work. For someone who is the spirit child/resurrected by the light side of the force, Dawson’s version is cold and almost emotionless. That isn’t and never has been Ahsoka Tano. Even in “Rebels” where it was clear that she was seasoned, had lost the quiet innocence of the child she still had in “Clone Wars” you still had her optimism and felt the light within her. Even in her “mission” in helping others and fighting the Empire and all its forces you felt the purity of heart and soul. Again, Dawson lacks that.
Would I have loved to have seen what Ashley Eckstein could have done in a live action role, absolutely! Having met and spoken with Ashley Eckstein, she as a person IS the true embodiment of Ahsoka Tano both in character and out. You feel like you are in the presence of Ahsoka when you see and talk with Ashley. While I will continue to follow the character in live action, I remain disappointed in Rosario Dawson’s performance.

[*FTR – the following was an unexpected rant*]

I truly wish they had allowed Ashley to bring Ahsoka to life in live action. I can only imagine how devastating it was, and probably still is, for her to not have that opportunity. She is responsible for turning Ahsoka into one of the most beloved Star Wars characters of all time. Ahsoka would not be the Goliath that she is now had it not been for Ashley. It was her hard work, dedication and passion that almost singlehandedly saved Ahsoka and transformed her into the universally loved badass that she is today. I don’t hate Rosario in the role, I think she’s been pretty good in the role. I have noticed a change in tone when it comes to fans and even the general audiences, feelings towards Rosario as Ahsoka. Prior to the release of the Ahsoka series the consensus was overwhelmingly positive with people saying that Rosario was a great or, as many were saying, a “perfect” live action Ahsoka. It wasn’t until the 2-episode premiere of Ahsoka that that change in tone started to happen. It’s been rather surprising to see the consensus shift so dramatically from “great” & “perfect” to “just ok” & “meh”. The most common critique being that her portrayal is “stiff”, “boring” and “lacking the Ahsoka charm/personality”. Fans are becoming less and less impressed/accepting and more and more frustrated/turned off. Viewers, especially fans, are no longer happy with Dawson’s Ahsoka and many feel like she has done a fairly poor job portraying Ahsoka in the series. I personally think there is a very deliberate reason for the various character/acting choices that have been made. I believe that when writing the series Dave created specific arcs for the various characters in the show, specifically the main cast. It would make sense that Dave wanted the series to start off with Ahsoka in a dark[ish] place – feeling defeated, closed off, distant etc. Then as the story/show progresses we will🤞🏻see her reconnect with friends/allies, the main one being Sabine. And with each episode we’d see her regaining that spark, fire & passion along with her joy, happiness & peace. To be fair to Rosario, Natasha has received some similar criticisms, but still nowhere near the level/degree to which Rosario has. So I believe the same thing will happen with Sabine. We will see both of them change drastically throughout the series [ie. significant character growth & development, “re-finding themselves”]. As of now, I believe the negative critiques of Rosario as Ahsoka may be a little misguided, but not necessarily unfounded. I just think it’s too early to judge. We haven’t even made it to the halfway point in the series yet. It’s best to wait until the entire series has been released. It’s not entirely fair to judge when we don’t have the full picture. We need to be able to review the entire performance with full context. Many things we know not of yet. That being said, there is one thing I do know, none of these things [aka the negative critics & issues that the fans have with Rosario] would have happened if Ashley was our live action Ahsoka! While I don’t hate Rosario and I think she makes a decent Ahsoka, I absolutely 1000% believe that casting Rosario & not casting Ashley was THE biggest mistake that Lucasfilm & Filoni have EVER made when it comes to their “Mando-verse” shows! 💯
