Girl who played Ariel is nor African American, she is Black. She was born in U.S. Charlize Theron and Elon Musk were born in South Africa, that makes them more African American than most.
It only took the bottom line for Disney to come to their senses. A Black Ariel was uncalled for. Absolutely nothing against the actress but it would be like putting a white girl in the role of Tiana. Can you even imagine!!! Stop remaking the classics and Imagine new ones. Disney you need to remember who got you where you are today…it was the average American!! Hard working people wanting to do what Walt made Disneyland for….to have fun with his kids!!! You are pricing us out of your parks just to make more and more money for your shareholders. You Need To Do Better for us!!
They did not make Ariel black for the sake of “being woke.” They auditioned several different races and Halle’s voice and audition was better than everyone else they saw. The fact that people can’t just accept that she was cast based on her princess-like voice and her soft personality and acting and the only thing yall see is the color of her skin proves so many of you are still racist in 2025
And if you believe that I have bridge to sell you.
So Disney could find NO OTHER White actress good enough – I call BS. When Lion King on Broadway ONLY accepts black actors, when non-white minorities culturally appropriate traditional European fairy tales – that’s all ok. What flavor of koolaid you drinking.
Some of us have no desire to have wokeism, or DEI being imposed on our lives and liberties. This is 2025… anyone who feels “left out” or “overlooked”, or whatever you’re personally whining about, should be addressed by YOU to whomever is causing your problem. To force DEI and wokeism on EVERYONE for the sake of a few was and is wrong. The popular results of Disney’s wake-up call and readjustment just proves that. If you feel affronted, get a lawyer… there’s still the Civil Liberties Act… and leave the rest of us out of your personal battles!
People of color should be ashamed of Disney. You don’t change a classic movie for a token person. You create new movies, a new storyline and new heroes for people of color or others. Hope Disney has learned that and doesn’t force “wokeness”, “DEI” or even “Religion” on people in the future. Just clean family entertainment especially for the working class that walt created Disney for.
Shifting gears is a very good show and only one of the two shows we watch on the networks
Don’t get too excited. Former cast member here with contacts in the parks yet. They have not even THOUGHT ABOUT scratching the surface. They are hoping these small gestures will fool everyone.
I am totally ok with having a new character like Eric’s adoptive mom being an African American and him being adopted, but the actress being African and a gender-swapped scuttle just seemed forced, don’t get me wrong I think African American and female representation in media is amazing! but Disney should try to do it more naturally
So a single show starring the famously conservative Tim Allen is supposedly indicative of “a successful shift to anti-woke” throughout the company? Yeah, I’d say the jury is still out on this one.
so totally agree. Isn’t this the point that this anti-woke / anti-DEI movement is trying to make? Most qualified over race? What is the opposite of “woke”? asleep is the answer. They are ok with adding a Christian character here and there though. That’s not pushing an agenda, right? Did the president get this memo when adding to his cabinet? nope…..

“Seen as being woke” – the line should read absolutely positively forced woke-ism on their guests.
SHOCKED – I am not and its about time.
Walt

About time! It should never have taken this long for Disney to get the message.

The problem is that in many cases the best qualified person may be perceived as “woke” by those who seem really concerned about it.
Gary
The gamble is Trump and MAGA are not going to last, so they’ll go along with it for now. They’ll be a push back eventually
