The Walt Disney Company has released its Q1 earnings report, and with it has confirmed its streaming service Disney+ lost a significant number of subscribers. Disney’s first-quarter earnings were released Wednesday morning, reporting yet another quarter of portability despite a 1% decline in Disney+ subscribers.
While small, this percentage represents a loss of 700,000 subscribers in total. Excluding Disney+ Hotstar, Disney+ has around 124 million subscribers.
This was not a surprise for Disney, which anticipated the loss and is now forecasting another “modest decline” in subscribers during 2025. Interestingly, as IndieWire reports, Disney+ added over 4 million subscribers between June and September of 2024.
Disney+ launched in 2019 and has fundamentally altered the streaming service space. While relatively new, Disney+ has managed to carve out its own spot in the industry, standing tall among giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Max.
Disney+’s success can largely be attributed to its catalog, which includes both classic animated fairytales as well as each new release from Star Wars and Marvel.
While subscribers dropped, Disney+’s average monthly revenue actually increased by 4% due to the service becoming more expensive.
“In fiscal Q1 we saw outstanding box office performance from our studios, which had the top three movies of 2024,” CEO Bob Iger said in the company’s Wednesday earnings release.

Things were quite sunny for Disney’s experience business, which includes its cruise line, theme parks, and consumer products. Revenue for Disney Parks and Experiences rose by 3% during the quarter to $9.42 billion. Disney’s domestic theme parks accounted for nearly 70% of this figure, once again confirming just how popular Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts are for the company.

This year will be a big one for Disney, both in terms of its upcoming film and TV productions and the company’s theme parks. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to grow once more with the release of Captain America: Brave New World, which sees Anthony Mackie take on the title and role of Captain America. The highly anticipated film, which releases on February 14, is the fourth mainline Captain America film.
Later on, Disney and Marvel will release Thunderbolts, which operates similarly to DC’s Suicide Squad, a ragtag group of misfits sent on a mission where teamwork will be key. Thunderbolts releases on May 2 and stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, and Geraldine Viswanathan.
Finally, and likely the most anticipated film of the bunch, is Fantastic Four: The First Steps. This film has been a long time coming, following the rather lukewarm critical reception the Fantastic Four franchise has endured over the last several decades.
It’s anyone’s guess if Marvel can pull off the crew of superhumans in live-action form, though the official Fantastic Four trailer looks promising.
Outside of the Marvel bubble, Disney will also be releasing its third Avatar film. Titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron seeks to reinvent the world of Pandora once again, this time merging his main group of characters with new factions of Na’vi.
Fire and Ash will release on December 19, 2025.
