I need to make sure I watch Skeleton Crew on December 2, 2024! Otherwise, Disney might claim low viewership — rather than too much money spent on making and social media criticism as being the reason they cancel it.
Social media telling people to dislike Acolyte. Disney advertising it as “Woke” (which it really wasn’t). And people like me (who didn’t watch it until a couple months later). THAT is why the series failed. Same with Agatha All Along. I was excited for Billy’s story (and MCU heading towards Young Avengers)!
I paid for a one-year subscription of Brit Box. Since Disney acquired the rights to Doctor Who, I wanted to show a couple people the entire Whoniverse (whatever I could get on streaming, that is). So I paid for Brit Box. I’m hoping to cancel it after my time is up.
The same people also watch Star Wars & MCU with me. So, of COURSE I wanted to wait to watch those after we finished the Brit Box stuff.
When Dinsey+ was making their content disappear, I wanted to make sure I saw any content that they would have on their chopping block. And those two were getting hit with negative reviews about the shows (even before those series aired).
That’s why I watched those series when I did. I couldn’t on release dates, due to Brit Box commitments. No one told me that Disney cancels anything that doesn’t make them instant money on day one of release!
Set aside the social/political implications for a minute. More important is the fact that The Acolyte seemed to have been written by a prepubescent twelve year old.
Exactly, poor writing is what killed that show. No one cares about the color, race or creed of the actors. That is a manufactured problem. To quote Morgan Freeman when asked about racism, he summed it up perfectly. “Stop talking about it.” That is what keeps it alive.
I love that Morgan Freeman clip / quote. And you’re right — most people don’t care at all about those things, they just want a great story with thoughtfully written and believable characters.
The small group of people who are hyper focused on those aspects are.. well, I’d wager most of the Acolyte’s writers fit into that group.
The acolyte was written by someone who had no idea what the star wars mythology was all about. That is why it failed. It was poorly written and executed.
I give a series 2 to 3 episodes to build before I make a determination about it. The story didn’t interest me. So I stopped watching. I heard that it got better later, but by then I couldn’t bring myself to watch it. The producer didn’t help with telling people “it’s not for you.” And then is surprised when those she told it wasn’t for them didn’t watch it. How about maybe making it for fans instead of trying to make something for the non-fans. Or make your own IP without the built in fans. The fans will have certain expectations.
Jesus Christ. It’s been 2 years since the “anti-woke” meme was used in Rings of Power. To try to make the writers and actors smug in righteousness rather than ashamed of putting out a shitty product. Can’t we finally let go of this ghost? It’s just lazy reporting/commentary.
Rings of Power was criticized because it was, and is, a shit show.
The Acolyte was criticized because it was, and is, a shit show.
Social issues primarily enter the picture at the instigation of the creators, not the fans. Who talk about how great their show is because of its casting. But then skip over the part where shows are great because they’re well written and well acted.
Game of Thrones had a number of strong female characters. Nobody raised a fuss. It was a good show. Up until the end, anyways, when the showrunners decided to create their own script. You can’t make the argument that shows are failing for being “woke” when “woke” shows also succeed.
Y’all really need to stop spinning this false narrative that The Acolyte was cancelled because of inclusion and diversity. Disney has always had shows with lots of inclusion and diversity that have been celebrated and not cancelled, even by people who are responsible for the hatred of The Acolyte. Disney would never cancel a show purely because people hated the diversity in it. No, it was cancelled (and hated) because the action and plot are terrible. The story telling was some of the worst I’ve ever seen, and I was thoroughly excited for The Acolyte and have loved the High Republic era so far. The visuals were amazing in The Acolyte, but the show as a whole was sub par
I think The Acolyte was much better than the credit that it was given. However, I have NO interest for this Skelton Crew mess and will not be watching it. I guess I’ll be boycotting or avoiding it out of retaliation for no more Acolyte. They can keep this one because it doesn’t look very interesting to me. I could be wrong. Wake me when it is over.
Acolyte was sold as exploring the dark side and the Sith so I was super excited about it potentially running along the lines of the now Legends novel Darth Plageius. Instead it went off on a tangent of a Jedi “who done it?” with a few seconds cameo of Darth Plageius at the end of the last episode. The story was also disjointed. That is why I disliked the show.
“I was super excited about it potentially running along the lines of the now Legends novel Darth Plageius. Instead”…
That is what got quite a few to dislike it. They had — in their OWN minds — what the series was going to be about. When it didn’t fit THEIR “head canon”, they felt betrayed.
M. Night said that his movies don’t have an ending, because “each person has their own ideas of how my films should end. And I simply wouldn’t want to compete with that. Their ending is probably (in their minds) better than anything I could come up with.”
I enjoyed Acolyte because I didn’t pay attention to anything from media and (especially) social media. I went in blind. All I knew is that the story would tap into the dark side. That was it. No expectations and a fan of the franchise. That’s probably why the only problems I had with the series was overly-stretched scenes and some unnecessary padding.
Being “woke” wasn’t the problem. Diversity and inclusion can be done correctly if nuanced, and not simply checking boxes for the sake of it. The shows problem was incredibly bad writing that did not engage audiences.
Jeez – the Acolyte opened with a spectacular opening fight sequence, to introduce a new slew of characters, similar to the Mandolorian. Had some of the best lightsabre battles I’ve seen in star wars and had an excellent dark side antagonist in ‘the stranger’. Being a fan since 1977 I revel in seeing new takes on the SW universe and different perspectives – I have watched every frame of SW in all formats. it’s not all going to hit perfectly and some parts will not always land – but I can’t see why there is so much much vitriol and hate from supposed ‘fans’. The original trilogy had enough plot holes to sink a ship and some terrible writing but that didn’t stop me loving it. Get over yourselves and let them finish a bloody story. Star Wars was always woke – it’s not their fault most of these supposed fans grew up and joined the Empire.
Social media told me that I’m worth nothing unless I follow how everyone else one social media tells me to think.
Now, social media says I won’t get my “participation trophy” unless I dislike my comment and say nasty things about it.
It’s a good thing I listen to social media — rather than think for myself. Otherwise, I would have nothing to repeat over & over again…until I begin to believe it, myself.
Those that are fans of the franchise enjoy the content. Those that are social media slaves will find fault with the franchise (and be very vocal about it).
Read just the comment section for THIS article. You’ll notice how all the hate comments practically say the same thing. You’ll notice how the ones who liked it (or feel neutral about it) have different views from one another. At least one person who disliked it had an ACTUAL reason. The others who didn’t like it? “It’s crap and too Woke and I thought the Night Sisters going down the witches road was a terrible premise for Moana’s second adventure!”
Yes. Compare the hate comments for Acolyte with the hate comments for Agatha All Along. I haven’t seen the hate comments for Moana 2, yet; but I bet you’ll find similar wording there, as well.
Yet another person blaming the fans for thr incompetance of kennedy. The writer headland tried to queerify star wars when its main demographic is middle aged men. And the main star of the show was a racist black. And there you are again blaming the fans. Its people like you thqt is the problem not the fans.
The Acoyle was doom because it wasn’t what skin color, gender or sexuality the employees had, it was doom because it was a $230 million over budget costing show, that didn’t show one inch of the reason it cost that much because of who was in charge, how the actors were acting on and off screen, how the writing was because all of them had no clue what Star Wars was. Charlie Barnett believe that there isn’t good or bad sides in Star Wars, that Anakin Skywalker was the one to blow up the Death Star. We hear feminist activist insult the fan calling them sexist or racist and yet not one go after Disney, The Acolyte had 695 employees 30% of them are women, and yet the women’s average hourly pay was 19.4% lower than the men.

All that modern Star Wars is missing, is a laugh track.
