A Walt Disney World Resort guest recently amassed attention online after she accused the Central Florida Disney park of artificially inflating the cost of women’s pajamas.
On Monday, Amanda (@happilyamanda_ on TikTok) shared this video from the World of Disney store at Disney Springs. The guest was shopping in the holiday section when she noticed a set of matching plaid Christmas pajamas in men’s, women’s, and children’s sizes.
@happilyamanda_ The actually might be the biggest rip off ever when they are the same exact thing #disney #disneyparks #disneyworld #worldofdisney #wdw #disneyprices #ripoff #pricedifference
Amanda was interested in the pajamas until she noticed a distressing price difference between the men’s and women’s sizes.
“I have to show you guys probably the biggest scam I have ever seen in Disney, probably ever,” she began. “World of Disney is currently selling Mickey and Minnie matching PJs, but… The men’s Mickey PJs are $39.99, but the women’s Minnie ones are $59.99.”
There are only a few differences between the pajamas. The men’s feature Mickey Mouse embroidery and Mickey-shaped buttons, while the women’s feature Minnie Mouse embroidery and round buttons.
“Why the heck is there a $20 difference?” the Disney Park guest asked. “That is the biggest scam and the biggest ‘pink tax’ I’ve seen yet.”
The “pink tax” refers to a theory that companies intentionally make goods marketed to women more expensive. Common examples include disposable razors, shaving cream, and even pink pens.
Amanda’s video amassed thousands of views and comments–most from angry Disney Parks fans demanding better from Walt Disney World Resort.
“It’s because the wife/girlfriend is the one most likely to want the matching set, and if the men’s one is cheaper it’s easier to convince them to make the purchase bc it’s a ‘deal,'” one commenter suggested. “[It’s] dirty af.”
“You nailed it,” another replied. “Women will buy it for $60. Men won’t pay more than $40. Disney will always charge as much as possible.”
Still, some social media users suggested the pricing could have been a mistake. On the Disney Store’s website, both pajama sets cost $49.99, while the children’s Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse sets each cost $34.99.
Sometimes, price differences exist between the Disney Store and the Disney parks. It’s unclear whether Walt Disney World Resort will update the pajama pricing or if the disparity between the men’s and women’s pairs was intentional.
