I don’t wear anything without washing it first. Sometimes there is dye left in fabric: it happens. Always best to give a new garment a quick rinse for hygiene reasons if nothing else. I would not say it melted on him. Just heat and humidity loosened some dye. It happens. Really not a big deal at all. Same reason you wash colours together and whites separately.

A dark shirt and sweat from the heat and humidity will reactivate that dye and it rub off on stuff it’s touching. Just from someone who works with fabric dye on a regular basis. Sometimes I think people like to point out the fault in everything.
