The problem isn’t getting rid of Tom Sawyers Island, the problem is that cars doesn’t fit with the Frontierland theming. If it was being replaced by something with appropriate theming, that would be different.

Tom Sawyer Island is not going away. There’s no Cars Land coming.

The problem is removing the beauty and ambience of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island for a concrete jungle with ho-hum IP. It wouldn’t bother me if they changed out the theming of Tom Sawyer island, but don’t remove the water, and don’t remove “Frontierland.” No one among my friends or family cares a hoot about Cars. Josh D;Amaro talks about building the park for future generations, but future generations won’t care about Cars.

Why are they not following what Walt had said way back before the Magic Kingdom was built. “We have something here that we didn’t have at Disneyland. The Blessing of Size.” Disney has the land to expand, to build on and not destroy/eliminate what Walt started. Cars doesn’t fit in with Frontierland. Villains Land doesn’t make sense. It should be it’s own park. A 5th gate.
