I always assumed they were headed for a maximum carnage story, but they would have also needed at least one movie or maybe two before getting to that so now two decades later it would interesting to see where it would go since Tobey will be much older and they would kinda have to abandon any direct connection to the previous 3 since they happened so long ago aside from memories of the past. Maybe he would just do something like scarlet spider instead.
