Trouble For the Pop Princess in Spain

Katy Perry is facing legal woes in Spain as Spanish authorities have launched an investigation into the illegal filming of her latest music video.

The pop princess’s newest single, “Lifetimes,” features a music video that has sparked environmental concerns and has been met with legal scrutiny in the Balearic Islands.

On Tuesday, the environmental department for the Balearic Islands issued a statement saying that the 39-year-old pop superstar’s production team failed to secure the appropriate permissions before they began filming scenes for the music video on the “ecologically sensitive” dunes of S’Espalmador.

S’Espalmador, a tiny uninhabited islet located north of Formentera, has long been a protected area inside the Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera Natural Park. In fact, the area was put under the park’s protection more than 40 years ago in 1980.

The video (seen below) was released on August 8 and features Perry enjoying the beauty of the landscapes of Ibiza and Formentera. She is seen soaking up the sun in the Mediterranean and enjoying the nightlife on the islands.

But it’s the video footage of S’Espalmador’s dune system that is of concern, ultimately raising red flags with authorities in the region.

Per PopCulture:

S’Espalmador, stretching approximately 1.8 miles, boasts what officials describe as the “best-preserved dune system in the Balearic Islands.” The regional government’s tourism website emphasizes the area’s “great ecological value,” underlining the importance of its protection.

While the environmental department is investigating potential damage to the restricted area, which is demarcated by rope barriers, they clarified that the filming doesn’t constitute a “crime against the environment,” per The Guardian . The statement noted that video or photographic projects “can be authorized” upon request, suggesting that the issue lies in the lack of proper permits rather than the act of filming itself.

Time will tell if there will be legal ramifications related to the illegal filming for the musical superstar.

Perry’s Newest Album

“Lifetimes” is Perry’s latest single and has been released ahead of her newest album, titled 143, which was derived from the numerical code for “I love you.”
