You’re misrepresenting this situation. These are not vouchers. The parents are free to spend these funds at public schools, and many are trying to do EXACTLY THAT, but public school districts are refusing to serve PEP students across the state. It would be nice if you reported on real issues rather than mischaracterizing things you know little about in an effort to paint a narrative.
Leon County, Polk County, Clay county…
These are actually NOT FUNDS that would EVER have ended up in public schools. They’re a scholarship specifically for homeschooling families (PEP statute 1002.395). And now there’s a way for them to be spent there, but the counties themselves are kicking up dirt and refusing to take the funds and make classes accessible to the students.
IF the State of Florida is offering money to families that have children that are NOT in public schools, I think it is a GREAT idea that they can spend it at Walt Disney World. Disney spends a lot of money on its History curriculum. The many programs at WDW are things that public school teachers would kill to have access to. The HALL OF PRESIDENTS and LIBERTY SQUARE are but two examples. The information that the Behind the Scenes tour of the Magic Kingdom gives to its recipients is invaluable. I am an Historian and have taught in both public school and college. I learned many things from my many visits to WDW that I could pass on to my students. Its a shame that WDW is removing the RIVERS OF AMERICA program. It not only has the riverboat, but an actual settlement of Native Americans which are going to be replaced by a race car program. This is the ONLY Native American historical vignette at WDW.
