What the article was saying, and I agree, is that making movies for a 3 to 4% demographic (tops according to census data) is a bad business plan. The other 96% of us prefer to keep adult sexual topics away from children and keep it age appropriate. It is up to parents to tell their kids about these things. It is not Disney’s prerogative. Yes, it is important to not teach hatred, but to teach them some people are different, and to love them and not bully them. But again- that is up to parents. Disney has received that message loud and clear. It makes financial sense for them to heed the wishes of parents.
Well said. Not a single political undertone or message detected. And it makes a billion. Was that so hard? That said, this is a sequel to an already strong original. It is not family as much as it is relatable to teens and adults and kid friendly. It tells a story to everyone equally, fairly, unforcefully. My five year old niece loved it. My teen said it was super close to how he feels sometimes. My wife cried. My mom said it made her remember her teens. Ages 5 – 60 all touched. Zero negative comments. That’s storytelling at its finest. Let’s just hope someone is taking notes. Perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel… The Pixar lamp shines bright for the first time in a while with this one.
I agree completely with the author here! It’s not that people don’t want diversity in their movies…it needs to be done in a ay that’s not forced…that feels natural. Many of Disney’s, as well as other companies, movies have felt like they were pushing an agenda that added nothing to the story and felt awkward and out of place. Hope this is a sign folks are coming to their senses and just telling good stories without all the current political spin…
So white straight “family” stories sell more? You might be right but man what a depressing case of white fragility that displays if true. Because Elemental was about Family. Strange World was also about Family. But Elemental was an immigrant family and Strange World a mixed family. Riley doesn’t seem all that straight in Inside Out 2 but they never come right out and say it. So I guess the fragile ones were safe from the horrid prospect of gay people existing. You might be right but man what a depressing read.
Animated movies like The Little Mermaid, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast were magical movies. I can even remember the songs. Disney at its finest I say. Coco and Elemental were fantastic movies. Strange Planet is also not a bad movie. Inside out 1 and 2 amazing. I want Disney to go back to making those wonderful movies Bambi etc. And the Prince kissing Snow white was fine. If he hadn’t of kissed her she would never have woken up. And her evil Stepmother would have won! Snow White didn’t deserve to be dead. She was Disneys first Princess. And she paved the way for many more after her.

So are you saying that “family values” only reside in white middle class nuclear families?
