Wow! I had no idea that they lost the rights to Steamboat Mickey. I’m still not understanding why though. Who leased it to them? Why did they not try and renew it? I like the family friendly version of Mickey Mouse more anyway.
Disney has A version of Winnie The pooh. The original creation is from a children’s book and the children’s book is what became public domain. So by default all of the characters how they were originally designed in the book are what are public domain. You won’t see any Winnie the Pooh characters with the iconic red sweater that Disney gave there version
You can only have *copyrights* for a particular version for at most 95 years.
That is why Steamboat Mickey is in public domain now, but also why later versions of Mickey would land you in court if you attempt to *copy* without permission from Disney.
