The Supreme Court Sides With DeSantis in Punishing Disney World Cast Members

Comments for The Supreme Court Sides With DeSantis in Punishing Disney World Cast Members

A diverse group of Disney cast members, mostly young adults, are standing closely together, smiling, and looking ahead. They are all wearing teal uniforms with badges. Some are holding hands, creating a sense of unity and celebration. The background shows more people in similar attire.

Let them stay at 1 of the many resorts Disney has?

    1. She

Yes. How about the failed Star Wars hotel?

    2. Elpoki

Disney can also build a complex to house these poor suffering employee’s and charge a rent according to their salary. If they really cared or worried about the new law.

      1. Bo

        Excellent answer!

      2. Marie

They don’t need to build anything. There’s hotels for sale. Buy one and convert. Room and board can be part of their pay.

  2. Bob

Agree with Kelly but if Disney does’t see this as an option, Disney must be able to make available some unused land for their loyal employees.

    1. Donna Buxton

Disney needs to build housing for there employees.offordable housing.apartments

      1. Walt

But how will Bob Iger build another custom sailboat? You’re so insensitive.

    2. Andrew

The problem is first Disney pulled there housing project in Nona on there own after moving them from California
The second the Supreme Court ruled on the Grants Pass no Floridas
      Please report the facts.

  3. Julie

If Disney was smart it would build low income housing and provide transportation to work at the theme park. Then feeding families and purchasing medication won’t be a choice rather a necessity that will become attainable.

  4. Put these people in one of the resorts not being used or build them something like you did for college program but better affordable.

  5. Dorothy

Disney should be providing housing for their workers or pay them more. Shame on Disney a multi million/billion dollar company

    1. C

Without a doubt, why is this even a question?

      1. Bob

This generation has no concept of survival; they themselves need to figure out their path in life. If they can’t double or triple up with other cast mates maybe they need to go home to mommy and daddy.

        1. Jwilliams

We used to do that at Great America. One summer 4 of us lived together in a 4 bedroom apt and it made it affordable for us. The wages weren’t great, but it was fun!

        2. John

I’m sure some of them ARE doing that but it’s not as simple as your ignorant and generalized “theory” and your biased views and disdain are obvious spewing from your saliva hole and infecting those around you. Now go do some ACTUAL RESEARCH ON THE SUBJECT AND CONE BACK and present ACTUAL HELPFUL AND MATURE THEORIES… N
Not YOUR “ARCHIE BUNKER-LIKE” outdated and ASININE B’s of an answer that screams “closed mindedness and cynical asshole” shut that sewer under your nose you call mouth) I’m actually a Republican… But *real” Republican as in Bush1 &!2 and Reagan… Not ron ron and Trump’s (he is evenwl actually better than desantis) fanatical Far right ultra conservative views that are holding us back and hindering growth and adaptions to new tech and life&saving science . As they are far too quick to debunk actual scientific and medical advance.. oh gotta run.. tbc

        3. yamaha6501982

STFU BOB, That new generation can’t even sleep in their car because their pay is too small to house anywhere. Bob you wouldn’t do better yourself. That matter should had been addressed decades ago !

    2. Tracydcb@yahoo.com

      Exactly!

    3. vito aluia

What other company provides housing for their employers? Instead of tax cuts to the very wealthy, how about investing in our citizens?

    4. Terry

I absolutely agree! In fact, I thought that Disney provided their employees with housing, that it was part of their compensation. I am appalled that they don’t provide housing. Disney property is huge! If the employees don’t live on the property, it must take them forever to get to work. Many of the employees are young college aged kids. Where are they going to get the money to pay for the outrageous rents that are now being charged by greedy landlords?

  6. Deborah Trudel

    I agree with Dorothy!

  7. Sandy

Disney should build air conditioned housing that their employees can actually afford.

  8. Vic

Our public parks, sidewalks etc. are not your personal property, bedroom, restroom etc. I applaud Gov DeSantis and others for taking a stand to protect what is intended for the good of all. Let the bleeding-heart liberals house them in their homes and yards, not mine!

    1. Phil

Love your empathy Vic. Hope you never have a sudden financial crisis.

Disney could help alleviate the problem by building dormitory type housing for single workers and apartment type housing for families. It would enhance employee loyalty and effectiveness, so it would benefit both Disney and the employees. The cost of construction and maintenance of the buildings is a write-off. Employees could be charged for utilities using separate meters to avoid abuse and an affordable rent. The company could also provide transportation from the living area to work at the different parks. It would be a win-win for the employees and the company.

      1. Why should Disney have to build housing and transportation for their employees?? And don’t get me wrong. I’m all for helping the homeless. Disney already has housing for their college program employees.

        1. yamaha6501982

Your comment sound ridiculous. With Disney low wage jobs it’s obvious that they need to provide affordable housing to their employees or face employees shortage !!

      2. Corrine

I completely agree and was going to write the same thing.

      3. tim

Yup Socialism is the answer for all your laziness Phil

      4. Sam

Sounds like many here want to go back to the Company Town. You lose your job you lose your house that day. If a family lives in the Company Town and the worker quits or gets fired they have to move THAT DAY. Great solution???

      5. Terry

Very well said and an effective solution!

    2. lorraine cramer

but without rooms people can stay in with LOCKS on them and not throw them all in one room, this wont change

      1. Corrine

Who said they wouldn’t have locks?

    3. vito aluia

I bet you’re of of those Christian type people!!

  9. Danielle

Disney has the resources to solve this problem on their own. Provide dorm style housing for their lower paid employees. An alternative would be to secure corporate rental agreements at local properties where 4 such employees can live together to share the cost reasonably.

    1. Deb

But it’s not just Disney employees. It’s all homeless. They put the law before the solution. I agree some thing needs doing but putting them in jail won’t fix it. There’s lots of land, make campgrounds just for them. Something for the interim.

  10. Walt

I understand that being a front line cast member is NOT meant to be a life supporting job – I was one. BUT as with other employers they are top heavy in overpaid (and woke) management and they pay their top execs WAY WAY WAY too much. Never will change until the elite DO NOT run the board and the company.

    1. Bella

Since when is it a companies responsibility to provide housing for its employees. Why aren’t you demanding Universal, Walmart, Home Depot, Target, ALL other businesses to provide housing for there employees.
While I feel bad for the employees, this is an issue that the local, state, and businesses need to address.

  11. Michele

If Disney wants to help these people they should provide low income housing. They have plenty of land and money to make this happen. Or…pay their staff more.

  12. Jennifer Tharp

Homelessness is an issue all over. There needs to be programs that help them get off the streets. I myself am looking to get land to be able to build tiny houses where they can live. We want to teach skills and help them to become productive members of society. Help them with their addiction and mental health issues. Some just need a second chance, others need support, and some just someone to believe in them. I have the resources…. Just need the land.

  13. Cheryl C

DeSantis being cruel? No surprise there!

  14. lorraine cramer

there should be rooms maybe like college dorm rooms , small but liveable with so many bathrooms per floor especially for those that come in from out of state or the country to work there for a year or less. Maybe a small charge but with the wages not being that high , not a lot

  15. GH

Just talking about Disney cast members, there’s a resort that has been forgotten at Bay Lake. The buildings are still there, and they could be refurbished into low-income housing just for cast members. Heck they’d have their own beach and can use the ferry to get to work. It would be magical. At least Disney could use it and make a little money on it rather than leaving it abandoned. Also, as I read the law, it’s talking about public areas and Disney is private, so I don’t see how this affects cast members who stay on property. I worked with someone who lived in her car on property until she found roommates to share an apartment.

    1. Amanda Carpenella

      Great idea!!!!

  16. Amanda Carpenella

Can Disney do something to help their own?? Why not offer their cast members housing in one of their resorts? Pay them less in return for a place to live. Or they could pay them more, start a housing account for them with money that comes out of each check, and they stay in a Disney resort indefinitely. When they leave Disney they get to take their housing money, but it can only be used toward housing expenses.

  17. Carmen

Build housing for them I believe they have the land to do so or a shelter

  18. Christopher

This GOVERNOR NEEDS TO KEEP HIS NOSE OUT OF EVERYONE BESS & RUN HIS OWN BUSINESS & QUIT TRYING TO RUN FLORIDA LIKE A 3WORLD COUNTY WITH A DICTATORSHIP THIS IS THE WORSE GOVERNOR WE EVER HAD & WHY DON’T THEY SHIP SOME HOMELESS PEOPLE TO THE GOVERNOR HOUSE &TO HIS KISS AZZ WORKERS PLACE THIS GOVERNOR DOSENT CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF FLORIDA ONLY CARES ABOUT RUINING IT & MAY HE SHOULD SLEEP ON THE STREET ALONĜ WITH HIS CABNET & THEY SHOULD BUY UP THESE OLD HOTELS REVAMP AND USE THEM FOR THE HOMELESS

    1. RickTR

Judging by your “command” of the English language, you must be one of the illegal migrants who came here to get a free ride.

    2. Kim

      I agree with you definitely

    3. Sam

Boo hooo hooo. No freebies for the whiners

  19. Cathi

Check out Padsplit. Affordable, safe, no contracts.

  20. Terry

Disney has long underpaid their workforce staff. Housing is very expensive now so it is even more important they up pay to what it should be. Should have built affordable housing years ago.

  21. Annie K

The Disney employee homeless issue is too complex to point to one cause as the media is inclined to do. The employees may be unwilling to commute from areas with more affordable housing as many do throughout the US. Maybe some choose urban camping to save money, or they have not sought other solutions like sharing an apartment. Maybe they have too much debt or a lousy credit score. If salary were the only reason, far more would be homeless.

    1. CC

There are people that work for “The happiest place on earth” that are homeless and sleeping in their cars??? How sad. For sure, Disney has the means and property to come up with a fair and humane solution for their dedicated workers.

  22. Walter

Why is this Disney’s problem? Seriously. If employees are homeless for other businesses is it really that employers responsibility to make sure their housed?

Why don’t some who support that stance take them in? Live with you? Or pay for them or help pay for them their rent? Utilities? Etc?

  23. Pablo Dee

Not surprising that the liberal bastion of entertainment ddoesn’t pay their employees a living wage

  24. Sue H

Disney just moved and sold the log cabins from the camping resort. They are building new cabins.
Those cabins could have been moved to vacant Disney property for lower income cast members who could have a reasonable amount deducted from their pay as rent.

  25. Kevin

How about Disney pay their employees more, cut money losing Disney studios, fire Kathleen Kennedy and all the Disney studio staff and cut corporate profits. Walt Disney would immediately do this if his employees were in the streets. What a jerk Igar is.

  26. Cheryl

Homelessness is a problem everywhere. The government should lower the rent prices and house prices. People can not afford to live with the prices skyrocketing everywhere. It is not only Disney’s problem it is a problem in the entire USA. Stop blaming Disney. Start blaming the politicians. Lower taxes and lower inflation.

  27. John

As many have previously noted, Homelessness is quite complicated middle class working families who have a traumatic event can suddenly become homeless! That said, regarding Disney “cast” members, that corporation could easily build tiny homes on the undeveloped property that they own

  28. Mary

Homelessness is a problem, only worsened by those who want the government to provide the solution. There are multiple agencies who try to solve the problem, albeit not always effectively. The problems are numerous….poor economy, job loss, drug and alcohol, mental health problems. The homeless shelters are often inadequate and those who can benefit don’t want to be there due to multiple problems as well. I love the idea of tiny houses; however, in California, a gentleman was building them and shut down by California government because of “code” issues. It will take a community solution, not necessarily the government, to reign it in. I applaud DeSantis for his decision; its now up to corporations and businesses to help with this situation.

  29. Stuart L Pressman

It’s Disney for G-d’s sake! Put up a building for your homeless employees. It’s not like you can’t afford it. Simple solution.

  30. Stuart L Pressman

I left out of my last comment, If being homeless is a crime and you put the homeless in jail, then they will have a bed to sleep on, food, bathroom, & shower amenities. Do you think you did something good? And when you have potentially filthy smelly people, some of who you worry have needles in their pockets, that the police want to spend their time arresting them?

  31. Blue

Disney should build dorms for employees.

  32. Loretta M. Bland

there is to many people using drug and alcohol many have mental problems, Start getting help for these people they should be in mental hospitals not on the streets where people are walking and children should be safe.

  33. Gary

If I get caught sleeping on a public beach, will I go to jail?

  34. C-Lei

Listen up leftwingers! We have a capitalist economy, not a communist/socialist one. The government does not own the means of production with redistribution based on equality of need.

No company is responsible to provide housing. Many of you people are delusional. A company owes you nothing more than the wage and benefits agreed upon when you accepted the job. You do not accept a job and then later demand more than you agreed to accept.

Here is a factoid for you socialist/communist dreamers: A job is neither a right, nor an entitlement! No one owes anyone employment. Be grateful you have a job at all.

Here is another factoid for you: Housing is not a right or entitlement either! No one, other than parents of minor children, has to provide housing to anyone else.

If you lack sufficient education or skills to obtain employment that pays well enough for you to house yourself, that’s on you, not anyone else. Some of you are acting like an entry-level job is supposed to pay you well enough to house yourself! Unless you are a STEM graduate or chose to learn a trade. it is not.

You leftists need to stop telling others (including companies) how to spend their money. Stop telling the government to provide housing or housing vouchers. That is everyone’s tax dollars being used. I for one do not want a portion of my income going to house others who made poor life decisions regarding education or career choices and have done nothing to improve themselves.

People need to return to taking personal responsibility instead of blaming others or demanding others solve their life situation caused by their own choices. Never forget the US Constitution only lists 3 inalienable rights! Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Life: You have a right to your life. The government cannot end it without just cause.

Liberty: You are free to live your life how you choose and are free to have your own social or political views. You do not have the right to impose them others.

Pursuit of Happiness: You have the right to pursue what will make you happy in life, but are not guaranteed happiness, only the right to seek it.

A few more things to ponder:

A right ceases to be a right if someone else has to provide for it. Why? Because that violates someone else’s liberty and right to choose.

Related to the former is the fact that your rights end where another’s begins.

  35. Michelle

I think homeless veterans should be the first ones helped in our country. If the cost of living is to expensive then move somewhere cheaper and get a different job so that you can afford housing.

  36. Katt

Years ago I had a private tour of one of the resorts going to be tore down. It could lodge the disney homeless, and why are they homeless if they work for Disney??

  37. Lisa

Why are the high paying staff members of the Disney World Headquarters not already taking care of their “Cast Members”?

The “Cast Members” are the main ones interacting with the overpaying guests!!

With all the acreage that the Disney Company owns there at Walt Disney World, why don’t they make a huge affordable apartment community for their “Cast Members”?

Building a NEW HIGH CLASS RESORT Building for the wealthy at the Disney Polynesian Resort shows that making money for the corporation executives to become richer is far more important!

Seems so VERY SELFISH and TOTALLY UNCARING that the ones who bring the smiles to the guests, are sleeping on the streets (?) or in their cars!

    * “Seems To Take the
MAGIC OF what WALT DISNEY wanted for Everyone to enjoy – “HAPPINESS” Away!!”

  38. Lisa

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH SOME OTHER COMMENTERS THAT RESORTS THAT ARE NOT BEING USED ANYMORE SHOULD BE TURNED INTO PLACES FOR THOSE WHO WORK AT DISNEY WORLD TO LIVE IN WHO NEED TO!!
