Personally, I do not think this is a “clutching the pearls” moment. Ariel’s comments were probably only meant to be funny, light-hearted, or whimsical. Ariel’s friends are fish. Makes you wonder what she does eat, is Ariel a vegetarian or does she eat small fish? Whatever, don’t take character encounters too seriously.
It’s sad because in “reality”, vegans can be so rude and pushy about changing your diet, that someone who is actually trying to just joke about it, or be a bit light-hearted about it because of her character, can now be taking wrong.
