It’s clear thr city want to built an take more revenue money for their corruption life to sell the land the take an kill whatever it take not takeccare nòthing but stealing in gain in votee not wellbeing the animal environment all about its their paycheck payoff only. what matter an is not study off how smarter valuable thy ecosystem have then human keep destroying only government biggest famous mafia scam
I have lived and been there for about 50 years. And! Yes! There is change needed for those animals. They deserve our commitment to support their Happiness and Natural Life. It’s time to renew it. The commitment with new people and New visión. Dade County Resident.
Jose Santiago
This is clearly a government tyranny to resale the lease to another vendor. Shame on Miami Dade County and it’s elected officials. Greed and Corruption at it’s highest form.
Nevermind that the animals in their care are basically tortured. But yeah, it’s the greed & corruption of Miami-Dade officials. *insert eye roll here*.
No, Miami sea aquarium was a huge stepping stone in my childhood! The things I learned and experienced there and magical. Dade-county back off! Instead of spending money on lawyers and procedures, why not put that towards a donation to help fix this poor park so if can continue to fill the minds of genuine to come!!!!!
Lauren Stark let’s put YOU in an exhibit at Miami Seaquarium against your will. You can swim up , and catch pieces of fish , swim backwards on your butt, and do acrobatics on command for hours. Then spend the rest of your day bored, and depressed and maybe die before your age.
Let these animals be who they were meant to be…Free! I’m sure at this stage, they’ll never be. I’m over 50 years old and Lolita the Orca just passed away in 2023. I watched her when I was in elementary school in Miami Dade County. Our entertainment will never be the reason to continue to violate the animal’s God given right to be in their natural environments. How sad that we have violated humans and animals because of money. Everything comes to an end especially if there is negligence on behalf of caretakers. I commend the county for looking into this.
Harsh much! She stated she went as a child and gained knowledge from those visits. And while I agree the Park should have done more to change the environment for their animal residents, I don’t for a minute trust the money grabbers in charge of Miami-Dade. They are probably in a corner rubbing their hands together in a true Uriah Heep fashion.
This park has been a horrible place since it began, I’ve been there as a child and as an adult. As an adult I saw how horrible it actually was and asked my mom if it was like that when I was little, she said yes. This place needs to go and the animals to better facilities
This action by the county is why we need trump back in the Whitehouse.
This pure government tyranny by Miami-Dade county and they must be held accountable.
Leave private enterprise to those who know how to run it not to a bunch of corrupt politicians. Vote 🗳 for Trump.
Did you read the article? They are mistreating animals in such a negligent form. Why would you want them to stay open? They surely didn’t teach you to love or adore animals.
Miami Seaquarium should have never existed. Leave animals where they belong, where they come from, not in unnatural settings. I saw an employee mistreating, and cussing at a sealion. She told the sealion, I’m gonna F-u- up. Than she chased the animal into an enclosure. I couldn’t see what happened after the we’re inside.
Please report that to management.the employee needs to be fired.for being mean to the sealion, who knows what else the employee is doing to any of the animals. Please report it.
Animals are clearly suffering and dying there from mistreatment and not having veterinarians. This company doesn’t care about animals . They care about profits only. I hope they will be shut down for good asap.
This is another example of tyranny on the part of the left.
Shutting down a businesn the name in the name of
humanity is lunacy. It is more government control and is an issue that affects every decent American out there.
Animals are in no way safer in the wild as they are in captivity.
These places provide a safe and enjoyable environment for people of all ages to learn about these wonderful sea 🌊 creatures.
We certainly can’t learn about them as well by going to the ocean.
These parks are vital so humans can get property educated on these wonderful sea animals.
TELL THE COUNTY TO BACK OFF.
Keep these places open to keep our humans educated.
They should have been shut down decades ago. The fact that they are taking this long and allowing the abuse of these poor animals is disgusting. You can clearly tell the comments saying they should remain open are the owners of this atrocious establishment.
Please report that to management.the employee needs to be fired.for being mean to the sealion, who knows what else the employee is doing to any of the animals. Please report it.
What is going n isn’t right on both sides.
Also if the aquarium has over 2500 employees to care for the residents and only one vet is apparently in the article caring for them alone.?
Yes I think Miami Seaquarium should permanently close for good. It’s been enough with animals getting sick, dying, not wanting to eat. Shut it down!!!!
If this were really about animal protection, the county has had decades to pursue these measures. Despite what the conditions for the sea life may be at the park, this is clearly tyranny at work. The county has other plans for the land and are hungry for money.
And the people profiting from the suffering of the animals are not money hungry? They have ALSO had decades of revenue to increase the size of the pens for these animals and never once did. Stop crying tyranny over every little thing that involves government, cry tyranny over something that matters like being forced to vote for a dinosaur or a crook….
“Forced to vote for a dinosaur or a crook”. I am going to use that! Most people would love to vote for the best person for the job, the problem is that they never run for office! We get to pick from the bottom of the barrel
The reason the county wants it to close is because of a developer wants it to build 15 story condos of it. I read that in the news about it… Corruption at its best.
I am never going to live in a condo….give me acreage
Yes they should close. All marine mammal parks should close. The problem is what to do with the marine life at that point. Unfortunately they will probably just be moved to another place where they are forced to perform for food. These places are so sneaky with their info as well. They will cover up all their misdoings. I use to work at one of these places in the upper keys and saw them disregard issues and then make excuses for why nothing was done while still making the animals “work”. They all disguise this abuse under brainwashing tactics. It’s really sad. And it’s very concerning to see that the trainers and people taking care of these animals look at them more as science projects than living compassionate beings (I’ve actually been told this by a head trainer at the facility I worked at when I chose to voice my disagreement to one of their decisions). Smh.
This was a staple of my childhood and that of my kids whenever we visited Miami. There must be a happy medium where the MSQ can provide a wonderful life for its animal residents and an exciting, educational, and safe environment for its guests, not unlike any of the great zoos in the world.
As a 49 year old lifelong resident of Miami, I have watched the slow decline of the Seaquarium for my entire life. For more than twenty years it has gotten worse and worse. Everyone on here claiming corruption by the local government are forgetting the help the county has continually given them over they many years of violations. This place was amazing too me as a child, but as I grew older it was continually on the news. The Seaquarium is not what it once was and needs to be shut down.
In 1980 a killer whale committed suicide here because he was alone.
They should have been shut down decades ago! it’s in humane to trap a giant mammal that’s used to roaming an entire ocean in a small tank for 45 years! We reserve solitary confinement for the worst people in jail as the worst punishment available, it’s no different for animals that live in social pods. I HOPE THEY CLOSE SEAWORLD NEXT. If you’re someone that wants it to stay open because “it was part of my childhood” maybe we should have kept slavery also, that was part of someone’s childhood. Grow up, shut it down.
If I want to see a wild animal, Veronica, I look outside my window and see deers, bears,
Squirrels and other of GOD’S creatures. I live on 15 acres, not in a box 6 stories in the air. Miami- Dade wants a developer to build condos on the site…
No matter the county’s motive, Seaquarium should be closed. A facility like this is great for rehabilitating wild marine life, but it should not be for entertainment. I liken Seaquarium to a puppy mill….cruelty for profit.
This action by the county is why we need trump back in the Whitehouse.
This pure government tyranny by Miami-Dade county and they must be held accountable.
Leave private enterprise to those who know how to run it not to a bunch of corrupt politicians. Vote 🗳 for Trump.
From the read, these aquarium people are and have been abusing the sea animals for a long time, for yeas. I dunno I’m not there and what do we believe? However, they have been lawfully evicted an insist on staying using all legal means. As usual, some liberal judge will make the final decision that makes nobody happy.
Miami Dade take the out the tenant, he does not show to have the funds to care for the park or residents. Why allow more to died. Enough is enough, he had planty of time to show he cared and was willing to do all the repairs, hire another vet and more staff to care for all the residents. Miami Dade when you do get another tenant find one with funds and experience in keeping this type of businesses going.
Great to see some decent human beings here in the comments who understand how tragic it is to trap and mistreat animals who are so intelligent and deserve to be free in their natural environment (or in a sanctuary if they cannot be released into the wild). These people have tortured and neglected animals for too long and I’m HAPPPPPPPY to see this place close, only sad it didn’t happen sooner. To those of you who wish it’d stay open so you can be entertained by the suffering of animals you have shown your true colors. God bless these poor animals and I hope the ones that are left can have a good place to live out the rest of their days.
🙏🏼 FINALLY!! I don’t understand why it took so long to take action, but I am happy it finally happen!!
I think all places dealing with animals that are unable to provide the proper care should be shut down.
I now hope these animal are given the proper care as they release then from this hell!
As a child and adult previously… I ATTENDED this facility falsely thinking I was an animal lover.
Since then and being vegan 9 yrs. I agree with its closure.
Absolutely!! Abuse of animals for the public’s pleasure is unacceptable and puts at risk the many other places that house marine mammals and put the animals well-being as first priority.
The only efforts Miami Seaquarium should be making is in humanely re-homing ALL of its animal inhabitants. My heart breaks every time I follow this story and the ignorance and lack of empathy is appalling.
If the animals were being harmed they would have shut down many years ago. And for you people that says let them go , that would be harming them. Yall must be Biden supporters
If they won’t treat the mammals, fish and animals humanly, then they must shut down. If an orca starts ramming it’s head against the wall, there is obviously a reason for it. Fix the problem. The housing must be in good shape. No reason for one resident to find a bolt to eat. Fix it or get out. Not fixed it due time, so they must go.
My parents would always take me there in the 50s. It was always such a thrill to see the orcas, especially. But I think their time has come to an end. I don’t believe the facility is large enough to contain the animals that they’re in care of so I don’t believe they’re getting the proper care.
If any of these humans had some real sense in their brains they would know and feel that these poor animals should never be in eclosed places, this is beyond sad, i would love to place these individuals in cages just as they are doing to these animals.
That place is a nightmare and a blight! It’s disgusting treatment of sea life, deplorable conditions and complete lack of upkeep is a statement that the owners don’t care about the animals, their well being or care! SHUT IT DOWN!!!
The animals need adequate space to swim, fly, crawl. They also need 100% better care than they’d get on their own, or release them. High penalties should be paid for every death or infraction, and all personnel must be under stringent scrutiny at all times.
YES!! Should and need to close… the evidence speaks for itself when it’s numerous times over decades.
Move on to the next chapter as there always is one and stay positive!!
There was no mention of what will happen to the mammals and animals. If they have been in captivity their whole life they will not know how to survive. Who cares if they paid their rent or not. The facility has abused, neglected and did not take care of them, so it needs to be shut down, but not at the cost of their lives.
Everyone needs to keep in mind that unless we do something about the health of our planet, private zoos and sanctuaries will be the only place we will be able to admire these rare and beautiful creatures. Unless we do something now this is what our planet will succumb to.
Again here we go with these ignorant ignorant liberals there is a place in this world for aquariums and zoos almost every city has them you know the services used to have elephants and some circus is treated them bad but most circuses did not just like anything else but the same group just made the comment series the same group that made that circus is remove the elephants and now the young people don’t have access to the elephants and now the poachers are poaching the elephants more so now than ever before and the young people don’t care the whole purpose of aquariums in zoos is conservation it brings people closer to the animals it opens up their minds and their hearts it removes the apathy that most of us have for anything that doesn’t concern us out of sight out of mind type of thing and one more thing I would love to know out of the comments how many of you and cats and dogs how many y’all keep your cats locked in the house how many I’ll keep your dogs in a cage or locked in the garage while you’re at work or in a fenced in backyard shut up hypocrites clean up your own damn house, if there is abuse of animals then clearly that needs to be addressed but animals being removed from the wild for whatever purpose isn’t a bad thing itself, and I know this might come a shock to a lot of you people the animals aren’t really like people so they don’t think like people and I’m assure you they don’t think like you people
It’s a rescue and research facility. We have learned a lot about how to care for them over the years.
They don’t have pods to go to they will be alone and attacked. Yes, if released you signed their death warrant.
Instead of gripping, how about donating to make both Miami Seaquarium and Sea World larger to gain larger pools and and fund them more to keep staff like caretakers and veterinarians available.
Don’t bring problems, be the solution.
If you care about the animals improve their lives not set them “free” to die.
If the Aquarium has to go over animal mistreatment, then they ALL have to go (SEAWORLD), but of course It’s all down to money. But animal suffering is the same everywhere (Aquarium/Seaworld) despite the pricetag they are still in captivity! Oh, and then, let’s ensure they are all better treated AFTER the places they are in now no longer exist, and let’s not make their suffering worse!
Close it and place these animals in a happy healthy sea environment. No animal should be caged or in a small enclosure or a fishbowl, just for human entertainment. That is not quality of life for these animals.
You know this is about future land use not animal abuse… condos, condos, condos.
Who is going to pay to shelter these animals in a suitable environment if the facilities are closed down? No one… the “babies” will be euthanised not sheltered.
Make way for major realestate development on the site.
Whoever is at fault for the mistreatment of the animals should be replaced with better and more knowledgeable staff. The facilities should be updated and enlarged. The priority should always be the welfare of the animals. I visited the Miami Seaquarium many times as a child of the 50s. My 2 sons were taken there in the 1980s through the 2020s. I would love to take my new grandson there to learn about the ocean animals as well.
No ma’am, larger facilities and different staff will not fix this problem. The abuse of these animals isn’t due to a few cruel individuals working there, but due to the fact that these animals are kept in enclosures their whole life to entertain humans AT ALL. These are creatures that have a range of thousands of unrestricted miles in the wild. When you visit these places, you are not learning about ocean wildlife, as nothing in their captive behavior or life resembles that of any oceanic creature. When you visit these places all you are doing is entertaining yourself at the expense of these animals’ lives and suffering, nothing more. Marine parks are not appropriate place to be educated about the ocean or marine biology, the people who put on the shows are nothing more than performers and entertainers, not scientists. The worst part of your visiting these horrible places is that you take children, teaching future generations that is OK to treat animals this way- to keep them in cages for our pleasure, to disregard the animals lives and needs and feelings, that their lives don’t matter. So if you’re looking for who’s to blame for the suffering of these beautiful sentient creatures, you can start with yourself and your choices. How your visiting these places not only contributes to this issue, but it’s what actually created the issue. Human desire to be entertained at any cost is the entire reason that there are orcas in swimming pools to begin with. You may want to examine your view of their right to exist wild and free. Because every time you visit one of these parks, you are giving them money to perpetuate the cycle and continue the suffering. We are all called to examine our choices in today’s world, and try to do better.
Animal Sanctuarys are not cruelty free either.
Instead they are still stared at by ppl and are exploited by this time, scientists. They’re stuck in tanks still, and you say this is better then the place that’s being shut down.
What’s need to be done is that the animals should be dropped into sea without exploitation from scientists who constantly studies them.
If the animals die in the wild oh well.
People don’t need to get involved with animals.
Pets will be next on PETA’S anti human interaction list.
Come on
They closed up zoos, now sea aquariums are closing. Then it will be Farms that raises meat for ppl to eat.
Then it will be pets as you animal Activists say that man kind is cruel to pets.
We exploit are animals, when we show them off to other ppl.I got news for you PETA or ANY VEGAN CULT GROUP,YOU WILL NEVER WIN.
YOU MAY WON THE BATTLE,BUT NOT THE WAR!!!
I hope that INGRID NEWKIRK reads this.
When were you last at SeaWorld any of the sea worlds. And I mean you should be there every month and then you really know what the park is about the lots of changes and taking care of those animals so if you never been there or haven’t been there lately and I mean many times a month I go every other month. Find something else to complain about.
Hey Ash, remember that a lot of these mammals can not go back due to issues of feeding or whatever ills them. So, lighting up a bit. Better staffing, updated facilities and continuous education for staff could eliminate problems. Unless you would rather them send these beautiful creatures to their death by nature’s selection.
That was the perfect remark. These creatures should be free to the world like they do. Making money off the imprisonment of an intelligent life form is totally against nature. Every animal in the zoo has mental problem because they don’t have the range to move around like they would in the wild. There is more than enough room for human being to live then to destroy the habitats of the animals that live on this planet that have the same rights to it that we do. If these animals disappear from the wild then so do human beings. The most destructive species ever to be on this planet is the human being. We are the only species that I owe that kills for the fun of it.
You animal rights bleeding hearts need a new hobby! Sometimes zoos and aquariums are the only exposure some people will ever have with these animals. I’m ok with a few animals being held captive for the education and entertainment of countless thousands of children who might learn a thing or two. Animals are not people. Orcas, as intelligent as they are will never build a Hubble telescope. Dolphins will never perform an open heart surgery. Comparing thier experience to that of a human is asinine. Especially for those animals bred there. They don’t pine for the fjords!
Very well said! I’m so glad someone will speak out against the abuse and cruelty that these creatures endure for their whole lives for the entertainment of a few.
Oh you are so correct, capture and don’t know but primitive idea of thier life cycle but we’re going to admire you from afar and pay to see you and never give another thought to what’s happening to them when the paying public leaves maybe a person should be caged and taught tricks and see just how much they care
Try again Ash. Most of these animals were rescued after being injured out in the wild or were born in captivity. It would be like taking a cold born in the city out into the wild and forced to survive. These places offer them shelter, food and 24 hour medical care, which is what your ticket prices goes towards, and if people are going to be entertained or educated, that’s up to them.
Ash I totally agree! We have passed the point where most Seaquariums can offer adequate habitat for these behemoths to survive ,much less thrive ! With their numbers I’m the Wild dwindling ,keeping them as Performers is “cruel & unusual punishment “ & totally undeserved !
Absolutely correct. Humans continue to profess the human race is “Civilized”, but that is so far from accurate. All of us should respect, love and protect our beautiful and precious wildlife and their habitats. Animals experience the same physical & emotional pain as humans. It’s truly a disgrace how Animals are treated without conscientious thought in all walks of life.
Your response was a bit preachy and arrogant, especially when you spoke about how this person should raise their children.
Try to think of a better way phrase your response in the future.
Alas, human beings also end up in cages. Some deserve it – even require it to protect others, but some just end up there because of poor legal representation and lack of money.
Ash I couldn’t have said it any better myself I agree 💯% they kill and capture these beautiful creatures for entertainment everyone that buys a ticket is just helping the shit continue we need to do better as humans I’m glad it’s shutting down any place like this should be shut down …
Ash I couldn’t have said it any better myself I agree 💯% they kill and capture these beautiful creatures for entertainment everyone that buys a ticket is just helping the shit continue we need to do better as humans I’m glad it’s shutting down any place like this should be shut down …
People that think these whales were rescued your wrong watch blackfish on Netflix it shows exactly what they do to these poor majestic animals….the corral and kill many while capturing the babies because they are the cheapest and easiest to transport yes what they they are doing/ have done is illegal but that doesn’t stop them…come on where’s your humanity we need to do better I’ve personally never been to SeaWorld because I don’t wanna contribute to the problem.
Shame on you for totally disrespecting the angels.
Is this some type of game for you? Why don’t you have your kids put in that situation? For most of the people on this planet, animals are creatures of love. We hate any type of abuse that they are subjected to.
So lady, shut up and get off this site. No one wants to read your crap.
How about you take your grandsons on one of the dozen Dolphin tour boat rides that Miami offers so he can see them where they belong?? Perhaps take him snorkeling down in the Keys? NOTHING except the closure of this modern day Nazi camp will resolve this issue. This place is nothing but a road side circus that is plauged by nothing but death and negative energy and should be burned to the ground after it closes. Please teach your grandson that the Kin we share their planet with us such as marine mammals do NOT belong in captivity. And this is coming from an ex SW Orlando “trainer”. I was once like you but this is NOT the way.
Sea animals should be free in the ocean not locked up to make money they suffer unimaginable pain in refined space and are treated badly by humans.Humans are worse than animals because they know wgat they are doing but still carry on.
Miami Seaquarium is a lovely place for kids and adults too, please update and fix whatever it needs but don’t close please. Many people like me love this historic and beautiful place.
Hind sight is always better than fore sight.
“Free Willy” only ended in the poor whale being allowed to die in a cold fjourd of a illness that could have been treated.
I have been a parent of a very special man who loves sea mammals and they loved him. Yes. They are sentient. Those in captivity depend on their care givers to provide food, care, and emotional support. Yes, they require lots of space to be what they are. Whales. But they also are social animals. They need their pods, their children, and their “boy”. My son’s story is unique and so was his whale. Dusty and Kayla. Always.
For those complaining about the animals in captivity. I see your side, “if” they were captured solely for the purpose of having them for entertainment.
But, many times they are brought in to save, whether from a hunter, other enemies, etc. And they can’t go back.
Often, they brought to protect (endangered), and to breed to attempt to get them off the endangered list.
I see both side of the coin. Both good and bad
Please do not close me and my husband have enjoyed going there even when we lived in New Jersey.Weve made numerous trips to see these mage stick animals.Beautiful creatures hire the professionals you need to take care of them do not take it out on the animals. Please get a register of names so they don’t close.
Miami Seaquarium should be kept in place for the sake of the animals. They cannot be released into the wild at this point, and need to be monitored to get proper care. The owners need to hire enough staff to take care of the animals properly, and Miami Dade county can assist in that care by providing funds to help. So many young people have learned about animals and saving the environment at the Seaquarium, and they would never get a chance to do that if it left. The Seaquarium also provides tourist a place to visit that is unique, so the county should help in its upkeep. Maybe the county needs to be partners in this effort.
It’s about time. These marine mammals should never have been held captive to begin with. It’s nice for humans to see them yes. But these orcas and dolphins must spend their lives swimming around their small tanks in circles. Would you like to be confined to your bathroom for your entire life? You wouldn’t and these animals shouldn’t be held captive in small tanks for their lifetimes. I hope they’re going to a marine sanctuary immediately.
Let me tell you something about how it feels to be locked up or incarcerated like these animals. Being confined to a small area that you have no choice in and with others is not Humane and it can drive ppl literally insane. These animals did nothing wrong and now they are INSTITUTIONALIZED. At what year could they have been released? When did they get any options? Why were they confined for so long? Did they murder someone?? I’m about to go off
Yet another example of people telling others how to live their lives. If no one were interested in seeing these animals, these places would go out of business. Life in the wild ain’t a bed of roses.
Because the RIGHT is only ever concerned with the almighty $, greed and power. They should be called the WRONG because nothing they ever do is right for humans or creatures.
It is about time that the Miami Seaquarium closes. That place is a disgrace and a shame to Florida. It’s sad to see so many comments supporting this hell of a place. People are so disconnected from what is happening on our planet. Our disconnection from nature and the way we treat other living beings with whom we share the planet are driving our species towards extinction. What is wrong with us to believe that it’s acceptable to keep animals in prison in the worst possible conditions, removed from their homes for our entertainment? What kind of delusion is that? Miami Seaquarium and places like those should not exist, not in a civilized world. It is a monstrosity.
The animals were captured separated from their families, no longer free & wild. They were forced to perform silly tricks as entertainment. This is not their purpose!! Insult to injury, no adequate vet care & ridiculously small pools rhar was inappropriate for their size & needs that caused them physical & mental irreparable harm.Rehab them back to the wild. Where they belong
I lived on key Biscayne at the lighthouse state park my dad was a ranger the Seaquarium was one of the only places we ranger kids could go and not only have fun but always learn something we watched the filming of gentle ben and flipper plus others their when they got the first killer whale wow what a thing to see I believe shampoo was actually a rescue it’s a shame if they close I think the state actually owned the seqariam because we got in free as state employees kids such a shame to hear
I’m agree with all of you saying these animals shouldn’t be kept in captivity. But what about these animals that have been in captivity fo so long, who are used to being fed. They haven’t had to hunt for their food. I know that have natural instincts but after being in captivity for so long will those instincts kick in before they starve to death. For any of them who were born in captivity they won’t know where or how to hunt because they weren’t taught by their parents of pod. ML
Long overdue. Sickening 😫 that people went here for so long and kept it open. Those whales are miserable. Just an ocean themed circus of abused, incarcerated beings…
I read 2 comments. Also, I’m slightly inebriated. The ‘animal refuge’ excuse is failing in 2024…
It’s true. The animals are kept as prisoners without a say in the matter. I wouldn’t know the difference myself, if I was raised in captivity.
Too bad though, being inspirational. I’m sure that the animals learned to like it.
I hate reading about abuse or neglect. If there is a way to improve their living habitats, then I would stay in the area & pledge support. Zoo’s & aquariums are integral for teaching & inspiring the youth.
I agree animals should never be exploited in this manner. However, I don’t believe the answer is to just dump them all in the ocean. Since they have been in captivity, they can no longer fend for themselves in the wild. That would be cruel. My hope is that an entity/sanctuary with compassion and the highest regard for animal welfare would step up to take in and care for the animals for the remainder of their natural lives, and then as a society we commit to never exploiting animals for our entertainment again.
This is so sad it hurts me so much more because this is happening today on my birthday. Whales have feelings just like humans. The knew the park needed upgrades to the enclosures. Set these whales free back into the ocean where they belong. 😪🙏🏾❤️
What a joke. People care more about animals more than their own families. These animals are born and raised in captivity at this point. There are laws they must follow just like you have a pet. These animals cannot survive in the wild at this point and yes children do learn about the wild counterparts to these animals. So put your Peta signs down and grow up. Humans are not the only animal that kills for sport by the way. Your precious killer whales do it all the time.
If people think that the Seaquarium closure after 70 years is about rescuing animals they are naive. This is Miami. Some developer has an inside with the city and will use the waterfront property for another development, no doubt a sweetheart deal. Some other facilities like this changed their procedures and kept animals for study and display for a short time, then released and replaced them. That should be done at the Seaquarium also. It is good for people to be able to see and learn about these creatures, not just looking at a screen.
I dont know if the seaquarium is going to be able to be made into a safe place or not.
But i have a question to those of you who say just put all the animals from there and zoos and where ever back in the wild. Have you thought about what will hapoen to them after?
Many animals in these places are there because they are injured and cant survive in the wild. If the were born there they only know life in captivity. Some animald are still here because they are in zoos. Other wises they would be extinct bacause of humans. Wether its poachers or humans moving in to there habitats. Puting some of the animals back out in the wild would be a death sentance. Some zoos and animal parks also have breading programs to relase animals back into the wild.
While i dont believe they should be in small cages of mistreated. I do believe that they if they are cared for properly with big enclosures that they are safe. I also dont see place such as animal kingdom as having the animals for entertainment . Rather a chance to learn about them and how to protect them.
I wonder of how many of the same people crying out for the whales lives and freedom and potential as free creatures, are as enthusiastic for the lives of unborn humans never realizing their potential or living their lives as intended.
Oh Wow that really hurts- Pro birth – OF COURSE moron. Or would you now like to “abort” children after birth as well. And spare me the trite “deny any assistance” crapola. There are so many individuals, Groups and churches that will assist in all areas – your ignorant statement is just that completely ignorant. But as a leftist liberal you must preserve the sacrificial ritual of your religion – human sacrifice.
Birth is started by a chemical release in the body. The fact you wouldn’t be of a positive mind of a new human coming into the world speaks more about you. You probably don’t think puppies should be shorted as easily as you think humans should.
Well, at least they didn’t spend their whole life suffering and being abused by being born to people that don’t want them. This is an evil world. Not really sure why people are still procreating at all.
You’re so ignorant. For your mind to think of the abortion debate when protecting other animals is a sad sign of your intelligence and big ego. Me man, me king. You other, you bad. Have another Budweiser dude. You’re what’s wrong with the world.
Don’t open your legs if you don’t want your egg fertilized. People got more respect for captive animals than the lives they create themselves being inresponsible and careless! Call it being feminist I call it pure selfishness and murder.
Leave it to a male chauvinist to deflect from the subject of this horrific situation for these animals. Go get a vasectomy and do your part to not bring any more children into this world…since men are the ones that cause pregnancies.
This place should have been shut down a long time ago. It has always had its problems with not caring for their animals properly. Like that manatee that they didn’t want to let free after 30-40 years of being captive in a small tank. They even put him in the back in a dirty, small, shallow enclosure where no one could see him. All so they could save themselves the embarrassment of signing him over to someone else. Even though they knew all along that the manatee would have been taken to a beautiful place with other manatees to retire. Finally they did reluctantly agree to let him go but now they are doing the same with the orca. I read she hasn’t seen another one of her kind in over 10 years. That’s torture, pure torture. They do not love or respect animals. They see them as objects to make a profit off of. I’m so so glad they are shutting down
I’m so relieved that this “hell on earth” for innocent precious animals is finally being closed down! No animal should be in captivity for the purpose of entertaining humans (who happen to be the cause of all the misery and trauma suffered by animals)! These vile places where beautiful gentle creatures are mistreated and gawped at by pathetic human beings are absolutely despicable, disgusting establishments and should all be shut down. There also needs to be much harsher laws introduced to protect poor animals who cannot speak for themselves, as there really is no protection for these poor abused creatures. Give me animals instead of humans anyday!! God bless the genuinely good, kind and caring people who actually love and help to protect animals from pain and suffering xx 🙏🙏
Can’t believe no one sees the big picture…owner of property wants to sell this beautiful piece of property and has to get them shut down!!! Welcome big development..it has nothing to do with animal treatment..it all has to do with money..
Yes I think they should close all parks and free the orcas and dolphins and all the other sea mammals on board they don’t deserve to be locked up no more free them
I AM MOST CERTAIN
THAT THIS HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH DISANTIS.
HS IS NOT DOING THE SEA MAMMALS
ANY FAVORS, DUE TO THE FACT THE WHALES AND DOLPHINS ARE GOING TO DIE.
BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN IN CAPTIVITY,
PROBABLY THE WHOLE LIVES THEY WILL NEVER MAKE IT.
UNLESS THEY ARE TRANSFERRED TO A
SANCTUARY. AND DEPENDING ON AGE AN CAPTIVITY, MOST LIKELY THE WILL NOT LIVE VERY MUCH LONGER. THIS IS A TRAGEDY NOT A VICTORY. DISNEY
HAS LONG BEEN A PLACE FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILY. NOT TO MENTION SCHOOL FEILD TRIPS. ALSO
PEOPLE THAT INTO MARINE BIOLOGY
DISANTIS
NEEDS TO GO.
ASAP
BY HIS ACTIONS
THESE DOLPHINS
AND WHALES ARE GOING TO DIE,
BECAUSE OF DISANTIS GREED.
Oh yeah it’s all about politics and DeSantis and his greed because he is the one running the show there, oh or I’m sorry is he bad because he doesn’t think Disney should be around because of gender equality….you friggin less-offs want it both ways to blame someone else for everything….here is a really friggin novel idea. Don’t throw stones when you yourself lives in a glass house….sorry I know you less-offs don’t understand that one…let me spell it out. Mind your own business, make sure your crap doesn’t stink before you criticize others…but then I guess we wouldn’t have liberals….and by the way, those animals have it better than most humans, put them in the wild where they have to fend for themselves, fight for food, and starve if these isn’t enough….okay getting off my soapbox.
If Sea World closes, injured whales and all the animals that Sea World helps will not have any Help at all. Like the Dolphin that got a prosthetic tail and a new home at Sea World. As a whole, we need Sea World.
Went there as a kid in the late 70s and early 80’s. I realized it was a prison then. Always amaze me how these Parks have made it this long guess it’s a reflection of society and how we still don’t recognize other animals as being conscious beings on this planet but then to recognize that will be to confront our own human arrogance that we have dominion over all of the life what a crock of bullshit that is.
What does serve as notice to the entire world animals are not to be kept in captivity for our enjoyment. There are millions of animals right now that are being used to entertain people, including wild elephants that are taken away from their mothers at birth so they be tortured so we can ride people on their back. LESS people more animals please. Thank you. Animals don’t need us. We need them.
I absolutely abhor any mistreatment, cruelty or neglect of any animal large or small. These poor innocent, beautiful creatures have suffered so much at the hands of human beings and we are supposed to be more”civilised” and “intelligent??? Don’t make me laugh, we are the most depraved, cruel, despicable species on Gods earth and could certainly learn a thing or two from animals. They are kind and sensitive and don’t torment or ill treat for pleasure, or torture and kill for fun like humans do. We have no right whatsoever to keep animals in captivity for our “pleasure” and cause pain and suffering to any innocent beautiful creature, but we do because we are arrogant, ignorant bullies and there is absolutely no adequate laws to protect animals from pain and suffering. All establishments that use animals to entertain humans should be shut down immediately and give me animals over humans anyday. I genuinely thank the kind, caring, loving, humans who work with and for animals to protect them and provide a better life for them and God bless these people and I wish there were more people like this xx 🙏🙏
People who are blaming Desantis dont seem to realize that a huge amount of the states taxes comes from Tourism. He isnt doing it as a publicity stunt, he isnt doing it to better Florida for sure, he is doing it because theres alot of fuckery going on that shouldn’t be. Animals should only be held in captivity long term for healing/ rehabilitation reasons, and most people with a brain stem agree. If he wanted to hang onto the numbers for profit, he would simply let them keep abusing animals by holding them for longer than they need to for the money. The same Goes for Disney. If you arent in this state, if you dont pay taxes here, if you arent impacted by the politics here, then you have absolutely no business acting like you know how things go down here and trying to make demands of the people who do live here and contribute to the state. Period.
Tomorrow will be a horrible day to anybody native to Miami. 38 acres of prime real estate on key Biscayne. I’m sure this is nothing more than greed coming to the surface and leaving a everlasting black eye to anyone who was raised in Miami. Shame on all these commissioners, the mayor, and the governor for allowing this to happen. Smh!
The animals have suffered in dirty tanks, foreign object’s in mouth causing pain, living areas too small…Now that they’re being shut down the owner claims they can improve & provide proper care. They claim they know how to then why didn’t they do it before? They claim they can improve conditions but they owe over $80,000 in rent – where is the money coming from to make improvements? Close them down immediately!!!!
If this is actually true. Then leave it to our Crupt Government to come up with this nonsense. If jobs aren’t already hard to come by. Let’s Go Brandon. This must be part of his failure of build back better nonsense. Leave it to our Crupt Government filled with Crupt Politicians to make stupid decisions like this costing more Americans their jobs.
Its Florida that decided this so.its Let’s go DeSantis. Also it’s about damn time they are shutdown. The place was rundown when I was a kid (tanks to small, dirty tanks, etc). The last time I was here was 35 years ago. The animals have went through enough suffering.
This should have happened decades ago.
I grew up on the Treasure Coast, I have only been to MS once. I actually cried,
seeing Lola in her swimming pool of a tank and the dolphin show, we never returned and never took our children.
The people that were complaining about Sea World (pre Blackfish and Dawn’s death),
certainly had never had visited this abomination of a marine park.
Well it’s amazing how y’all take something to do with Whales and turn it in to one of y’alls pro-life non-pro life right wing left wing debates the fact of the matter is we all have that one kid that we wish we didn’t have and with that being said well the facts are simple maybe you should have aborted it I’ll see how y’all can take a comment about Wells and turn it into a pro-life debate all y’all that are talking about prolives on a Wells page is all y’all are fucking retarded you just a bunch of idiots with nothing else to do here I am thinking I’m going to read an article about Whales and here I am reading article about a bunch of y’alls left-wing right-wing bullshit all y’all are morons the fact of the matter is human beings are the most destructive nastiest creatures God ever created we’re all self-centered and we don’t care what we destroyed to get what we want those are facts simple playing straight up everyday facts so with that being said if every human died on the earth including myself that would make me happy because then everything that has the right to be here can live here free like it’s supposed to be humans are the most disgusting and foul creatures on this planet the most destructive by far and we are the ones that should be extinct yes I’m very pro animal they’ve got a right to be here we don’t the choices we make destroy lives the wars we have destroys families countries cities states it’s just all a bunch of bullshit the end of the Earth will be due to the human
People need money. If they can make it off animals that’s awesome. Heck some humans eat animals lol. I do everyday and love every second of it. Though i get that that some humans are in love with animals and I suppose the divide will always be there. Everything in moderation. I personally would never pay to watch an animal but kids like stuff like this. Whatever side is the loudest gets its way. Its always been like that.
So you think animals should suffer while making money off of them? You think they should live in filthy tanks? You think they shouldn’t receive proper medical care? The things I listed is exactly what they did. I went here 35 years ago and it was awful back then.
I should say I support zoos, wildlife reaseach, and aquariums as long they are taken care of. Get proper vet care, proper enclosures, clean enclosures, etc. Zoo’s and aquariums have brought animals out in the wild off the endangered species program with their breeding program.
They failed the animals they were in charge of taking care of.They have dirty tanks, they’re not getting proper vet care, and they’re eating foreign objects because they’re not maintaining the tanks. Then to top it all off these animals are stuck inside of a pool swimming in circles and swimming back and forth going crazy because they need more room. The parking lot is bigger then there tanks!!!! Then they want to talk about conservation of these animals, but how can they even begin to talk about that when they weren’t taking care of these animals or properly maintaining their freaking tanks in the first place. How is that conservation? It’s all about making a profit, if they really cared about these animals, they wouldn’t be going through this in the first place. I say shut hut it down, empty all the tanks, and let these animals go back to where they belong, the freaking ocean!!!!
I think that they shouldn’t have something like this for animals that they cant provide for they should be in the water of the ocean like the rest I know I wouldn’t pay nothing to watch something so cruelty like some people do just to see the animals get tourched and die that’s so sad and not being yourself in true honor of life. When you be mean to animals your the devil they could help release the animals back in to our ocean and left alone I say SHUT THE PLACE DOWN. LETS SUE THEM.
Some of these won’t make it out there in the wild. They’ve been they’re too long or their whole life. It would be a great educational tool and jobs, not too mention a place for rehabilitation of animals when necessary – if they could get help from the city. They’re putting a lot of time and money into fighting the city. If the city would back them and offer more support, the animals could have a better quality of life. The city is hurting the process. The schools in the area, if not already, could be giving classes on how to work with animals and get students prepped for vet license. There are ways to make it work, but they need support from the city and the community. It costs money to run a zoo and to pay vets, along with other staff. Stop wasting their time and money Miami-Dade.
I remember when the Miami Seaquarium opened up, I was a little kid. Back then, it was sparkling clean and nice. This has been mismanaged, one: and in this day and time more is known about the intelligence and emotions of the animals, two. It seems to me that the facilities could be better utilized by the academic and scientific community, for the aid and preservation of Florida’s endangered species and dying coral reefs. Those endeavors are struggling: Florida’s coral reefs are on the verge of being lost. How about a wealthy donor offering to back something like this in this facility? Tickets could be sold to the public to see the ongoing efforts in conservation. Multitudes of sick and injured animals could be saved.
Comments for Closure Update: Florida Theme Park Must Shut Forever as of Tomorrow, Government Says
E
It’s clear thr city want to built an take more revenue money for their corruption life to sell the land the take an kill whatever it take not takeccare nòthing but stealing in gain in votee not wellbeing the animal environment all about its their paycheck payoff only. what matter an is not study off how smarter valuable thy ecosystem have then human keep destroying only government biggest famous mafia scam
Jose Santiago
I have lived and been there for about 50 years. And! Yes! There is change needed for those animals. They deserve our commitment to support their Happiness and Natural Life. It’s time to renew it. The commitment with new people and New visión. Dade County Resident.
Jose Santiago
Tommy
What?
M
Reading this gave me a brain aneurysm like Hugo. Go back to school
RM
What? @E
D
No, the animals will be moved to other marine facilities either in Florida or elsewhere.
Nicole
This is clearly a government tyranny to resale the lease to another vendor. Shame on Miami Dade County and it’s elected officials. Greed and Corruption at it’s highest form.
Heather
Nevermind that the animals in their care are basically tortured. But yeah, it’s the greed & corruption of Miami-Dade officials. *insert eye roll here*.
Randy
Animals are not tortured there
Lauren Stark
No, Miami sea aquarium was a huge stepping stone in my childhood! The things I learned and experienced there and magical. Dade-county back off! Instead of spending money on lawyers and procedures, why not put that towards a donation to help fix this poor park so if can continue to fill the minds of genuine to come!!!!!
David
Lauren Stark let’s put YOU in an exhibit at Miami Seaquarium against your will. You can swim up , and catch pieces of fish , swim backwards on your butt, and do acrobatics on command for hours. Then spend the rest of your day bored, and depressed and maybe die before your age.
Melanie
Let these animals be who they were meant to be…Free! I’m sure at this stage, they’ll never be. I’m over 50 years old and Lolita the Orca just passed away in 2023. I watched her when I was in elementary school in Miami Dade County. Our entertainment will never be the reason to continue to violate the animal’s God given right to be in their natural environments. How sad that we have violated humans and animals because of money. Everything comes to an end especially if there is negligence on behalf of caretakers. I commend the county for looking into this.
Angbii
D
This park has been a horrible place since it began, I’ve been there as a child and as an adult. As an adult I saw how horrible it actually was and asked my mom if it was like that when I was little, she said yes. This place needs to go and the animals to better facilities
10
This action by the county is why we need trump back in the Whitehouse.
This pure government tyranny by Miami-Dade county and they must be held accountable.
Leave private enterprise to those who know how to run it not to a bunch of corrupt politicians. Vote 🗳 for Trump.
J
Did you read the article? They are mistreating animals in such a negligent form. Why would you want them to stay open? They surely didn’t teach you to love or adore animals.
David
Miami Seaquarium should have never existed. Leave animals where they belong, where they come from, not in unnatural settings. I saw an employee mistreating, and cussing at a sealion. She told the sealion, I’m gonna F-u- up. Than she chased the animal into an enclosure. I couldn’t see what happened after the we’re inside.
Hope
Please report that to management.the employee needs to be fired.for being mean to the sealion, who knows what else the employee is doing to any of the animals. Please report it.
Eli
Animals are clearly suffering and dying there from mistreatment and not having veterinarians. This company doesn’t care about animals . They care about profits only. I hope they will be shut down for good asap.
Julia
Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end for all large sea animals being kept in captivity. Let this be the end to a very sad and cruel era!
JOR
Ozzie
and the county only cares about the almighty dollar. Clean it up and leave it open. Don’t let the county develope the property just to make more money
Randy
I don’t believe a word you’re saying why didn’t you go complain to management and get that employee fired
Terri
They should have been shut down decades ago. The fact that they are taking this long and allowing the abuse of these poor animals is disgusting. You can clearly tell the comments saying they should remain open are the owners of this atrocious establishment.
Hope
Please report that to management.the employee needs to be fired.for being mean to the sealion, who knows what else the employee is doing to any of the animals. Please report it.
Tony
Yes it should close doto the cruelty to animals GOD sees everything that goes on shame on you all GOD HELP you all
Baikey
What is going n isn’t right on both sides.
Also if the aquarium has over 2500 employees to care for the residents and only one vet is apparently in the article caring for them alone.?
Stephanie Sturm
Yes I think Miami Seaquarium should permanently close for good. It’s been enough with animals getting sick, dying, not wanting to eat. Shut it down!!!!
WG
If this were really about animal protection, the county has had decades to pursue these measures. Despite what the conditions for the sea life may be at the park, this is clearly tyranny at work. The county has other plans for the land and are hungry for money.
Tommy
And the people profiting from the suffering of the animals are not money hungry? They have ALSO had decades of revenue to increase the size of the pens for these animals and never once did. Stop crying tyranny over every little thing that involves government, cry tyranny over something that matters like being forced to vote for a dinosaur or a crook….
Andrew
“Forced to vote for a dinosaur or a crook”. I am going to use that! Most people would love to vote for the best person for the job, the problem is that they never run for office! We get to pick from the bottom of the barrel
Kaden
The reason the county wants it to close is because of a developer wants it to build 15 story condos of it. I read that in the news about it… Corruption at its best.
I am never going to live in a condo….give me acreage
Kat
Smh.
Robert
This was a staple of my childhood and that of my kids whenever we visited Miami. There must be a happy medium where the MSQ can provide a wonderful life for its animal residents and an exciting, educational, and safe environment for its guests, not unlike any of the great zoos in the world.
Matthew
As a 49 year old lifelong resident of Miami, I have watched the slow decline of the Seaquarium for my entire life. For more than twenty years it has gotten worse and worse. Everyone on here claiming corruption by the local government are forgetting the help the county has continually given them over they many years of violations. This place was amazing too me as a child, but as I grew older it was continually on the news. The Seaquarium is not what it once was and needs to be shut down.
Tommy
Tom
Let the animals go back to there natural environment ASAP.
LET THEM GO.
HOUSE THE HUMANS AND USE THEM FOR ENTERTAINMENT
Veronica
Good. Shut it down.and take SeaWorld and all zoos with it! If you want to see a wild animal, just youtube it.
Art
If I want to see a wild animal, Veronica, I look outside my window and see deers, bears,
Squirrels and other of GOD’S creatures. I live on 15 acres, not in a box 6 stories in the air. Miami- Dade wants a developer to build condos on the site…
AM
No matter the county’s motive, Seaquarium should be closed. A facility like this is great for rehabilitating wild marine life, but it should not be for entertainment. I liken Seaquarium to a puppy mill….cruelty for profit.
10
This action by the county is why we need trump back in the Whitehouse.
This pure government tyranny by Miami-Dade county and they must be held accountable.
Leave private enterprise to those who know how to run it not to a bunch of corrupt politicians. Vote 🗳 for Trump.
Bill
From the read, these aquarium people are and have been abusing the sea animals for a long time, for yeas. I dunno I’m not there and what do we believe? However, they have been lawfully evicted an insist on staying using all legal means. As usual, some liberal judge will make the final decision that makes nobody happy.
Juanita
Miami Dade take the out the tenant, he does not show to have the funds to care for the park or residents. Why allow more to died. Enough is enough, he had planty of time to show he cared and was willing to do all the repairs, hire another vet and more staff to care for all the residents. Miami Dade when you do get another tenant find one with funds and experience in keeping this type of businesses going.
Lisa Foster
GOOD RIDDANCE 👍
#ENDCAPTIVITY
LONG LIVE TOKITAE AND HUGO R.I.PARADISE
J
Great to see some decent human beings here in the comments who understand how tragic it is to trap and mistreat animals who are so intelligent and deserve to be free in their natural environment (or in a sanctuary if they cannot be released into the wild). These people have tortured and neglected animals for too long and I’m HAPPPPPPPY to see this place close, only sad it didn’t happen sooner. To those of you who wish it’d stay open so you can be entertained by the suffering of animals you have shown your true colors. God bless these poor animals and I hope the ones that are left can have a good place to live out the rest of their days.
LAM
There is no place in the world for zoos, aquariums, circuses, etc. Animal suffering for human enjoyment. Close it down!
Lelis
FINALLY!! Close it NOW!!!!
Maya
🙏🏼 FINALLY!! I don’t understand why it took so long to take action, but I am happy it finally happen!!
I think all places dealing with animals that are unable to provide the proper care should be shut down.
I now hope these animal are given the proper care as they release then from this hell!
Mona
As a child and adult previously… I ATTENDED this facility falsely thinking I was an animal lover.
Since then and being vegan 9 yrs. I agree with its closure.
LAM
There is no place in the world for zoos, aquariums, circuses, etc. Animal suffering for human enjoyment. Close it down!
Glenys
Yes! Shut it down!
Pattie
I totally agree. Animals do not belong contained in an unnatural environment…
Helen
Absolutely!! Abuse of animals for the public’s pleasure is unacceptable and puts at risk the many other places that house marine mammals and put the animals well-being as first priority.
Bridget
The only efforts Miami Seaquarium should be making is in humanely re-homing ALL of its animal inhabitants. My heart breaks every time I follow this story and the ignorance and lack of empathy is appalling.
Mell
Just look at the eyes and the sadness of these poor animals….. None look happy or thriving….. Close it down forever!!!!!
Debbie Roberts
Shut it down and have a document in place that NO animals can be sold transferred
to any aquarium!
Azaryia
No cause y’all had me scared that SeaWorld was being shut down 😭
Debbie Roberts
Your sad because Seaworld might shut down they are abusing their animals and MANY DIED!
Eddie
If the animals were being harmed they would have shut down many years ago. And for you people that says let them go , that would be harming them. Yall must be Biden supporters
Tammy
If they won’t treat the mammals, fish and animals humanly, then they must shut down. If an orca starts ramming it’s head against the wall, there is obviously a reason for it. Fix the problem. The housing must be in good shape. No reason for one resident to find a bolt to eat. Fix it or get out. Not fixed it due time, so they must go.
Just Me
I bet the majority of you people commenting on the poor treatment of said animals, eat animal flesh for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, hypocrites.
Nikki
My parents would always take me there in the 50s. It was always such a thrill to see the orcas, especially. But I think their time has come to an end. I don’t believe the facility is large enough to contain the animals that they’re in care of so I don’t believe they’re getting the proper care.
Jose
If any of these humans had some real sense in their brains they would know and feel that these poor animals should never be in eclosed places, this is beyond sad, i would love to place these individuals in cages just as they are doing to these animals.
Debbie Roberts
Your sad because Seaworld might shut down they are abusing their animals and MANY DIED!
Barb
That place is a nightmare and a blight! It’s disgusting treatment of sea life, deplorable conditions and complete lack of upkeep is a statement that the owners don’t care about the animals, their well being or care! SHUT IT DOWN!!!
Jackie
The animals need adequate space to swim, fly, crawl. They also need 100% better care than they’d get on their own, or release them. High penalties should be paid for every death or infraction, and all personnel must be under stringent scrutiny at all times.
Mark
Condos condos condos 😆 🤣 😂
Ann
YES!! Should and need to close… the evidence speaks for itself when it’s numerous times over decades.
Move on to the next chapter as there always is one and stay positive!!
Chris
After all that has happened, they need to close. If they had any compassion then they would know this.
Barbara
Yes, close it down already and find new homes or release into wild the animals. They deserve better! Too many animals have suffered already there.
Lisa
There was no mention of what will happen to the mammals and animals. If they have been in captivity their whole life they will not know how to survive. Who cares if they paid their rent or not. The facility has abused, neglected and did not take care of them, so it needs to be shut down, but not at the cost of their lives.
Lisa
Everyone needs to keep in mind that unless we do something about the health of our planet, private zoos and sanctuaries will be the only place we will be able to admire these rare and beautiful creatures. Unless we do something now this is what our planet will succumb to.
Virginia
I’ve been a voice for animals for years! Move the babies somewhere safe and well cared for since they cannot go back into the wild! No more captivity!
Ann
Yes, they need to close the zoo down.
Sandra Roman
Most definitely! So unfair to the mammals they deserve better…CLOSE IT DOWN
Douglas
Again here we go with these ignorant ignorant liberals there is a place in this world for aquariums and zoos almost every city has them you know the services used to have elephants and some circus is treated them bad but most circuses did not just like anything else but the same group just made the comment series the same group that made that circus is remove the elephants and now the young people don’t have access to the elephants and now the poachers are poaching the elephants more so now than ever before and the young people don’t care the whole purpose of aquariums in zoos is conservation it brings people closer to the animals it opens up their minds and their hearts it removes the apathy that most of us have for anything that doesn’t concern us out of sight out of mind type of thing and one more thing I would love to know out of the comments how many of you and cats and dogs how many y’all keep your cats locked in the house how many I’ll keep your dogs in a cage or locked in the garage while you’re at work or in a fenced in backyard shut up hypocrites clean up your own damn house, if there is abuse of animals then clearly that needs to be addressed but animals being removed from the wild for whatever purpose isn’t a bad thing itself, and I know this might come a shock to a lot of you people the animals aren’t really like people so they don’t think like people and I’m assure you they don’t think like you people
Joe
With punctuation I might have been able to understand this rant. Never mind, I doubt it
Bina
True!
Lourdes
If the Aquarium has to go over animal mistreatment, then they ALL have to go (SEAWORLD), but of course It’s all down to money. But animal suffering is the same everywhere (Aquarium/Seaworld) despite the pricetag they are still in captivity! Oh, and then, let’s ensure they are all better treated AFTER the places they are in now no longer exist, and let’s not make their suffering worse!
Julie
Close it and place these animals in a happy healthy sea environment. No animal should be caged or in a small enclosure or a fishbowl, just for human entertainment. That is not quality of life for these animals.
Kate
You know this is about future land use not animal abuse… condos, condos, condos.
Who is going to pay to shelter these animals in a suitable environment if the facilities are closed down? No one… the “babies” will be euthanised not sheltered.
Make way for major realestate development on the site.
Glenys
Yes! Shut it down!
Beth
Whoever is at fault for the mistreatment of the animals should be replaced with better and more knowledgeable staff. The facilities should be updated and enlarged. The priority should always be the welfare of the animals. I visited the Miami Seaquarium many times as a child of the 50s. My 2 sons were taken there in the 1980s through the 2020s. I would love to take my new grandson there to learn about the ocean animals as well.
Ash
Maria
Absolutely correct! 100%
Jennifer
Pat James
Totally with you on this. These poor creatures should be in ocean sanctuaries now. Should never have been captured or bred in these awful places.
Michelene
When were you last at SeaWorld any of the sea worlds. And I mean you should be there every month and then you really know what the park is about the lots of changes and taking care of those animals so if you never been there or haven’t been there lately and I mean many times a month I go every other month. Find something else to complain about.
Grumpyguy
Hey Ash, remember that a lot of these mammals can not go back due to issues of feeding or whatever ills them. So, lighting up a bit. Better staffing, updated facilities and continuous education for staff could eliminate problems. Unless you would rather them send these beautiful creatures to their death by nature’s selection.
Elle
I agree, thank you!!
Susan
Well said, Ash. Animals are not here for our entertainment.
Jeremy S
They better close down all zoos as well!!
Ileana Ramudo-Townsend
Indeed!
Russell Brahms
That was the perfect remark. These creatures should be free to the world like they do. Making money off the imprisonment of an intelligent life form is totally against nature. Every animal in the zoo has mental problem because they don’t have the range to move around like they would in the wild. There is more than enough room for human being to live then to destroy the habitats of the animals that live on this planet that have the same rights to it that we do. If these animals disappear from the wild then so do human beings. The most destructive species ever to be on this planet is the human being. We are the only species that I owe that kills for the fun of it.
Liliana
I am a Biologist and agree with your opinion. 👏
Mike
You animal rights bleeding hearts need a new hobby! Sometimes zoos and aquariums are the only exposure some people will ever have with these animals. I’m ok with a few animals being held captive for the education and entertainment of countless thousands of children who might learn a thing or two. Animals are not people. Orcas, as intelligent as they are will never build a Hubble telescope. Dolphins will never perform an open heart surgery. Comparing thier experience to that of a human is asinine. Especially for those animals bred there. They don’t pine for the fjords!
Madelyn Moore
Very well said! I’m so glad someone will speak out against the abuse and cruelty that these creatures endure for their whole lives for the entertainment of a few.
G nave
Oh you are so correct, capture and don’t know but primitive idea of thier life cycle but we’re going to admire you from afar and pay to see you and never give another thought to what’s happening to them when the paying public leaves maybe a person should be caged and taught tricks and see just how much they care
Crystal
Try again Ash. Most of these animals were rescued after being injured out in the wild or were born in captivity. It would be like taking a cold born in the city out into the wild and forced to survive. These places offer them shelter, food and 24 hour medical care, which is what your ticket prices goes towards, and if people are going to be entertained or educated, that’s up to them.
Susan
Ash I totally agree! We have passed the point where most Seaquariums can offer adequate habitat for these behemoths to survive ,much less thrive ! With their numbers I’m the Wild dwindling ,keeping them as Performers is “cruel & unusual punishment “ & totally undeserved !
Michael
Football’s more important
MCallahan
Same could be said about every animal at every ZOO
JJ
I could not have written this any better!!

Melodie HerManyHorses-Bauer
Thank you Ash,Yes,this answer is very correctly done, this is why I never took my children to these ocean wildlife park,
Howard
Your response was a bit preachy and arrogant, especially when you spoke about how this person should raise their children.
Try to think of a better way phrase your response in the future.
Lmix
Alas, human beings also end up in cages. Some deserve it – even require it to protect others, but some just end up there because of poor legal representation and lack of money.
Andrea
I couldn’t agree more.
John
100 % true.
Adriana
100% in agreement. Well said !!
Tracy
Yes absolutely 💯 correct
Leah
Ash I couldn’t have said it any better myself I agree 💯% they kill and capture these beautiful creatures for entertainment everyone that buys a ticket is just helping the shit continue we need to do better as humans I’m glad it’s shutting down any place like this should be shut down …
Leah

Max
Shame on you for totally disrespecting the angels.
Is this some type of game for you? Why don’t you have your kids put in that situation? For most of the people on this planet, animals are creatures of love. We hate any type of abuse that they are subjected to.
So lady, shut up and get off this site. No one wants to read your crap.
Apollo
Sofia
Sea animals should be free in the ocean not locked up to make money they suffer unimaginable pain in refined space and are treated badly by humans.Humans are worse than animals because they know wgat they are doing but still carry on.
Aida
Miami Seaquarium is a lovely place for kids and adults too, please update and fix whatever it needs but don’t close please. Many people like me love this historic and beautiful place.
Elayne
Unfortunately it’s not a lovely place for the marine animals held captive there in small tanks!
Jo Ann
Hind sight is always better than fore sight.
“Free Willy” only ended in the poor whale being allowed to die in a cold fjourd of a illness that could have been treated.
I have been a parent of a very special man who loves sea mammals and they loved him. Yes. They are sentient. Those in captivity depend on their care givers to provide food, care, and emotional support. Yes, they require lots of space to be what they are. Whales. But they also are social animals. They need their pods, their children, and their “boy”. My son’s story is unique and so was his whale. Dusty and Kayla. Always.
Rik
For those complaining about the animals in captivity. I see your side, “if” they were captured solely for the purpose of having them for entertainment.
But, many times they are brought in to save, whether from a hunter, other enemies, etc. And they can’t go back.
Often, they brought to protect (endangered), and to breed to attempt to get them off the endangered list.
I see both side of the coin. Both good and bad
Helen Marin
Please do not close me and my husband have enjoyed going there even when we lived in New Jersey.Weve made numerous trips to see these mage stick animals.Beautiful creatures hire the professionals you need to take care of them do not take it out on the animals. Please get a register of names so they don’t close.
Connie
Miami Seaquarium should be kept in place for the sake of the animals. They cannot be released into the wild at this point, and need to be monitored to get proper care. The owners need to hire enough staff to take care of the animals properly, and Miami Dade county can assist in that care by providing funds to help. So many young people have learned about animals and saving the environment at the Seaquarium, and they would never get a chance to do that if it left. The Seaquarium also provides tourist a place to visit that is unique, so the county should help in its upkeep. Maybe the county needs to be partners in this effort.
Kim roden
This is a great comment. Did you email the governor and whoever else is making this decision
S M
I’m sad!! How will they know how and where to hunt!!?? They just drop them off and say good luck!!?? That hurts my heart!!!
Elayne
It’s about time. These marine mammals should never have been held captive to begin with. It’s nice for humans to see them yes. But these orcas and dolphins must spend their lives swimming around their small tanks in circles. Would you like to be confined to your bathroom for your entire life? You wouldn’t and these animals shouldn’t be held captive in small tanks for their lifetimes. I hope they’re going to a marine sanctuary immediately.
Kelly
Let me tell you something about how it feels to be locked up or incarcerated like these animals. Being confined to a small area that you have no choice in and with others is not Humane and it can drive ppl literally insane. These animals did nothing wrong and now they are INSTITUTIONALIZED. At what year could they have been released? When did they get any options? Why were they confined for so long? Did they murder someone?? I’m about to go off
Candiceallard
To the government please don’t kill these animals yall have a reputation for doing just that in these types of situations
Rob
More Government intrusion. They could care less…it’s all about power and control. This decision should be left up to the state
Skip
Yet another example of people telling others how to live their lives. If no one were interested in seeing these animals, these places would go out of business. Life in the wild ain’t a bed of roses.
Omar
Whenever the LEFT sees a opportunity to destroy capitalism….THEY JUMP ON IT.

Because the RIGHT is only ever concerned with the almighty $, greed and power. They should be called the WRONG because nothing they ever do is right for humans or creatures.
Nicolas Ibarguen
Brenda
The animals were captured separated from their families, no longer free & wild. They were forced to perform silly tricks as entertainment. This is not their purpose!! Insult to injury, no adequate vet care & ridiculously small pools rhar was inappropriate for their size & needs that caused them physical & mental irreparable harm.Rehab them back to the wild. Where they belong
Rachele
I lived on key Biscayne at the lighthouse state park my dad was a ranger the Seaquarium was one of the only places we ranger kids could go and not only have fun but always learn something we watched the filming of gentle ben and flipper plus others their when they got the first killer whale wow what a thing to see I believe shampoo was actually a rescue it’s a shame if they close I think the state actually owned the seqariam because we got in free as state employees kids such a shame to hear
Maryann
I’m agree with all of you saying these animals shouldn’t be kept in captivity. But what about these animals that have been in captivity fo so long, who are used to being fed. They haven’t had to hunt for their food. I know that have natural instincts but after being in captivity for so long will those instincts kick in before they starve to death. For any of them who were born in captivity they won’t know where or how to hunt because they weren’t taught by their parents of pod. ML
S M
I agree!! This is painful to imagine and breaks my heart!!😢💔
Erich
Long overdue. Sickening 😫 that people went here for so long and kept it open. Those whales are miserable. Just an ocean themed circus of abused, incarcerated beings…
S M
How do they learn how and where to hunt and find food!?
Now they just drop them off and say “good luck”!? This story hurts my heart!!😢
Kelly
What is going to happen to the animals and are the people who worked there getting charged with anything??
Brent
I read 2 comments. Also, I’m slightly inebriated. The ‘animal refuge’ excuse is failing in 2024…
It’s true. The animals are kept as prisoners without a say in the matter. I wouldn’t know the difference myself, if I was raised in captivity.
Too bad though, being inspirational. I’m sure that the animals learned to like it.
I hate reading about abuse or neglect. If there is a way to improve their living habitats, then I would stay in the area & pledge support. Zoo’s & aquariums are integral for teaching & inspiring the youth.
Shannon Whaley
I agree animals should never be exploited in this manner. However, I don’t believe the answer is to just dump them all in the ocean. Since they have been in captivity, they can no longer fend for themselves in the wild. That would be cruel. My hope is that an entity/sanctuary with compassion and the highest regard for animal welfare would step up to take in and care for the animals for the remainder of their natural lives, and then as a society we commit to never exploiting animals for our entertainment again.
Natasha Taylor
This is so sad it hurts me so much more because this is happening today on my birthday. Whales have feelings just like humans. The knew the park needed upgrades to the enclosures. Set these whales free back into the ocean where they belong. 😪🙏🏾❤️
Jerry
No sir, the loud few should not drown out the quiet voices of the overwhelming majority of the masses. The educational value can not be overstated.
Bob ward
What a joke. People care more about animals more than their own families. These animals are born and raised in captivity at this point. There are laws they must follow just like you have a pet. These animals cannot survive in the wild at this point and yes children do learn about the wild counterparts to these animals. So put your Peta signs down and grow up. Humans are not the only animal that kills for sport by the way. Your precious killer whales do it all the time.
Phil
If people think that the Seaquarium closure after 70 years is about rescuing animals they are naive. This is Miami. Some developer has an inside with the city and will use the waterfront property for another development, no doubt a sweetheart deal. Some other facilities like this changed their procedures and kept animals for study and display for a short time, then released and replaced them. That should be done at the Seaquarium also. It is good for people to be able to see and learn about these creatures, not just looking at a screen.
Jessie
Matt
I wonder of how many of the same people crying out for the whales lives and freedom and potential as free creatures, are as enthusiastic for the lives of unborn humans never realizing their potential or living their lives as intended.
David
The same unborn humans that you want to deny any assistance for. Go away with that pro life bs and call it what it really is. Pro birth.
Walt
Oh Wow that really hurts- Pro birth – OF COURSE moron. Or would you now like to “abort” children after birth as well. And spare me the trite “deny any assistance” crapola. There are so many individuals, Groups and churches that will assist in all areas – your ignorant statement is just that completely ignorant. But as a leftist liberal you must preserve the sacrificial ritual of your religion – human sacrifice.
Akb
Birth is started by a chemical release in the body. The fact you wouldn’t be of a positive mind of a new human coming into the world speaks more about you. You probably don’t think puppies should be shorted as easily as you think humans should.

You’re so ignorant. For your mind to think of the abortion debate when protecting other animals is a sad sign of your intelligence and big ego. Me man, me king. You other, you bad. Have another Budweiser dude. You’re what’s wrong with the world.

Proud pro choicer and feminist
So happy no more captive Orcas there.

Laurie
Seriously that has nothing to do with the park being shut down!! Keep your prolife agenda out or this!!!
Sybil Brooks
I’m so so glad they are shutting down
Barbara Liggett
MARY
Can’t believe no one sees the big picture…owner of property wants to sell this beautiful piece of property and has to get them shut down!!! Welcome big development..it has nothing to do with animal treatment..it all has to do with money..
Roxanne
Yes I think they should close all parks and free the orcas and dolphins and all the other sea mammals on board they don’t deserve to be locked up no more free them
walt
Yes so they can die in the wild because they do not know how to survive – being in captivity for so long.

Oh geez! Animals are resilient and will be able to take care of themselves in the wild. They stole them from the seas and that’s where they should be!

I AM MOST CERTAIN
THAT THIS HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH DISANTIS.
HS IS NOT DOING THE SEA MAMMALS
ANY FAVORS, DUE TO THE FACT THE WHALES AND DOLPHINS ARE GOING TO DIE.
BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN IN CAPTIVITY,
PROBABLY THE WHOLE LIVES THEY WILL NEVER MAKE IT.
UNLESS THEY ARE TRANSFERRED TO A
SANCTUARY. AND DEPENDING ON AGE AN CAPTIVITY, MOST LIKELY THE WILL NOT LIVE VERY MUCH LONGER. THIS IS A TRAGEDY NOT A VICTORY. DISNEY
HAS LONG BEEN A PLACE FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILY. NOT TO MENTION SCHOOL FEILD TRIPS. ALSO
PEOPLE THAT INTO MARINE BIOLOGY
DISANTIS
NEEDS TO GO.
ASAP
BY HIS ACTIONS
THESE DOLPHINS
AND WHALES ARE GOING TO DIE,
BECAUSE OF DISANTIS GREED.

That has to be the most ridiculous comment I have ever read. These parks have been open long before Desantis🤣🤣🤣
Stephen

WJ
Did you actually read the article. It’s not about Sea World 🤷♀️🤦♀️
Bugs
Went there as a kid in the late 70s and early 80’s. I realized it was a prison then. Always amaze me how these Parks have made it this long guess it’s a reflection of society and how we still don’t recognize other animals as being conscious beings on this planet but then to recognize that will be to confront our own human arrogance that we have dominion over all of the life what a crock of bullshit that is.
Deblo
What does serve as notice to the entire world animals are not to be kept in captivity for our enjoyment. There are millions of animals right now that are being used to entertain people, including wild elephants that are taken away from their mothers at birth so they be tortured so we can ride people on their back. LESS people more animals please. Thank you. Animals don’t need us. We need them.
Barbara Liggett
Feralmagick
Period.
Adam
Hey Walt, a dollar bet you make love to your rifle every night. Go back to cave fool.

If the animals are not be cared for properly they need to be transferred to other facilities or if safe returned to the wild.

Smh!
Susan

This isn’t about no president right now it’s about animals and their well beings let’s go shut them down!!!!!!!!!!!
Timapno
Its Florida that decided this so.its Let’s go DeSantis. Also it’s about damn time they are shutdown. The place was rundown when I was a kid (tanks to small, dirty tanks, etc). The last time I was here was 35 years ago. The animals have went through enough suffering.
Kristin Wood
This should have happened decades ago.
I grew up on the Treasure Coast, I have only been to MS once. I actually cried,
seeing Lola in her swimming pool of a tank and the dolphin show, we never returned and never took our children.
The people that were complaining about Sea World (pre Blackfish and Dawn’s death),
certainly had never had visited this abomination of a marine park.

Kristen
