Wow, that’s a stretch.
Disney worked behind the scenes.
No theme parks or any business for that matter wants employees or customers dropping like flys. Old rules tied the hands of everybody, it was mandatory regardless of need. Outside does not mean in the direct sun, just somewhere not in a/c. Hot is hot, but no one in Florida is in danger in the shade, but previous rules said it didn’t matter, employees were forced to break even if they didn’t want or need to. The employer was forced to make them or face sanctions. Our highs only break records on a given day, you hear record breaking heat, it only means hotter that day vs. some other day in history. Sometimes is a record set 5-10 or 100 years. Our actual all time high was set around 1989 or 1990 I was here. It is regularly way hot and more dangerous in the southwestern US. Dry hot, no sweat, don’t realize your in trouble until it is a real problem. Florida has never been that way. If it’s hot, it’s humid, you’re sweating bullets.
Nobody has to tell you to take a break and drink water, self preservation dictates you do so. Self preservation is also why employers don’t need someone to tell them to allow you to.
That’s not always true many of the employers don’t care if You drop dead oi n the job and Will slave drive you and threaten to fire you for taking a break.
I have worked for people like that and having a legal protection protecting us from people like that. You people should be ashamed of your Selfies Putting Profit over Life. Most of our life’s are spent at Work as it is so that someone else can live Life Not Just be alive.
Very well said, thank you.
I started in a 1982 and yes, there were very hot days. There were very wet days, but the fact is, I knew when to get inside or take a break. Yes, the work be hard sometimes, but it’s what I signed up for.
If employers are not told to do so.etj9ng
Believe me, they wont. I e been in the workforce since I was 13 and I’ll ge 60 in a few weeks, so that’s what 47 years! And everywhere Ive worked the rules are plenty listed. Luckily where I’ve been working for the ladt decade is union jobs and those works rules between the union and the company fill a book. Literally. If they didnt we would be slaves just like any other job. Of course your rich politicians in FL tgat work in air conditioned buildings dont care about you, you dont actually expect them to do ya? That’s why they were pushing for this….ummmm..duh!
You’re not getting the point of the law though the point of the law is to make sure that the standards across the state are the same in all counties. And the only thing that this law does it prevents counties and cities from making a standard that is beyond the states standard so that it becomes uniform across the state on what the heat standard is. This way it makes it easier to enforce from county to county and City to City it’s the same in every county and city in Florida so there will be no confusion. Florida already has standards for heat exposure for employees
Um, exactly which law is that? THERE ARE NO HEAT PROTECTION LAWS IN FL. Other than a recent law passed for school sports students. Which entirely negates all of the affirmative arguments for no protections!
Um no, our actual all-time high was just LAST YEAR in July-Aug 2023. Also, there are NO heat protections at the state level, which is why local govts were trying to pass protections in the 1st place. None whatsoever. And the temp diff between Jacksonville to Miami is anywhere from 15 – 30 degrees different. So why would you pass a law to stop Miami from adopting safer standards??? Why?
Also, if it’s just common sense to stop & grab water, get in the shade, then why would FL pass a HEAT PROTECTION LAW for students who play sports & not for anyone else out in the heat??? They’re so concerned about kids dying, but hey lowly agriculture workers & cast characters at Disney are totally fine to work in that same heat???
No one is saying to stop working for months, just give them a frickin 5min break every hour or so ffs. Anyone who has any sort of humanity would never question that. But we all know exactly what this about. Profits over people. Same crap from the so-called “Christian” right… I’m sure Jesus will understand that $ is more important than a human life. Real Christians would never even consider such an atrocity… Disgusting
That’s not how sweating works. You cool down by sweating and the sweat evaporating. In high humidity the sweat does not evaporate, so you don’t cool as well. That’s why you hear people complain about high humidity heat.
I agree, I was waiting for someone to correct the commenter that said it was worse in the Southwest because we sweat more here in FL. They do not know what they are talking about
To the first coment on the board. Where do you live and who’s pocket are you in. That was corporate babble politicians are shady where do the donations go? Some old white dude who is way overpaid. It’s not the upper class working these jobs. You couldn’t do one day in the heat wearing any costume, or digging a ditch. Piss off and go tell your trash to friends. They will find it useless just like me.
No state or federal regulations in place for this! Look it up!…Quit talking off the top of your head!.. Please state the regulations by number and paragraph if so!
Yes, but now an employer whom is a hard ass can make you work in the heat with no break and their is nothing you can do!. Additionally this law only pertains to workers, not visitors or general public like you referred. Not everyone is prevy to working in the shade. Produce pickers: strawberries, oranges, watermelon, any kind of fruit that needs picking from the fields. Roofers get how much shade you say? Landscapers, street workers, utilities etc. Obviously you must not work outside in the heat for a living!…
Disney can do anything they like. Disney is a great company and does not need the government to tell them how to treat their cast members!
Stop making Disney sound like they will let people drop like flies! Shame on you!
Just another point to show how powerful the criminal lobbyists are. Imagine all of the back room deals made at the federal level. Who really controls and runs the country ?
Do I really need a law to tell me its hot, take a break and get some water? No, I don’t. When its hot out and I need a water break, I take it without being told… its called common sense
Now, imagine you with your common sense, said “I need to get some water or sit for a moment” and your employer said “No”, maybe implied you were being a baby or that you had to wait an hour to get a drink. People have been dying, especially in places like Texas where the passed a similar law. Better to be over protected than have no protections at all. There could even be a more humane version of this bill to pass but that would never happen
Yes, if you work for yourself, self employed. Try to that with a boss whom just doesn’t care about you and tells you NO keep on working! Whatcha going to do then?..
Heat breaks and limited time in the sun is actually part of their union contracts which are unaffectedby this law. We have enough negativity in this world without people like you trying to paint false narratives of this company as an evil corporation.
I’m sorry! WDW is just one employer in the state. Not everyone at WDW is unionized just a small percentage. How about the roofers works my on your roof, landscapers, road and construction workers. People in the fields picking produce, your auto mechanic. Mail carrier, Amazon delivery folks, they don’t even get bathroom breaks. Open your eyes!
Wow global warming made it hot in humid in Florida? I’m 60 years old it’s been like that since I was a little kid. How stupid do they think we are To buy into their crap
How many workers will get sick or die because Florida doesn’t respect workers lives. Also, limiting the minimum wage is wrong also. Minimun wage workers cannot afford rent and food. Some have to work 2 full time jobs to survive. Florida is not a friendly place to live and work. Another reason that I won’t be returning to Florida.
That’s not what Florida did Florida did not strip the rights of workers for heat protection what they did is they made it illegal for municipalities to go beyond what the state law is so that the law can be uniform across the state. That way you don’t have a different standard in one county and another standard in another county it’s all the same standard now. Which is much better and easier to enforce.
You do realize that the state law in Florida provides zero protections right? This isn’t about uniform protections because there literally are no protections for heat when working outdoors in Florida state law. The only protections that previously existed were those brought by municipalities and cities and counties. So relying on Florida State protections means you are relying on nothing. You have no right to a break when you work in for example construction in Miami, in the middle of the summer, and it feels like it’s 110° out because of the humidity and you’re literally getting heat stroke (which is literally something that happens here if you don’t get enough water and you don’t get out of the sun occasionally). You now have zero protections. So if you take a seat and get some water, you can get fired, also most of our jobs are not Union in Florida. This is a very anti-union state.
You bought that lie hook, line and sinker. My town/county should be able to pass laws that benefit its residents without interference from Rhonda DeSanctimonious and backroom deals with politicians.
There is NO state law or standard for water breaks! What are you talking about? If so, please site the verbage and location so we can all look this info up that you claim!.. Thank you
I work for Amazon, and my company must love this law. Because we are constantly challenged to stay hydrated.
I don’t think the average Costco stocks as much bottled water as the company provides us for free. And, we’re almost begged to consume as much as we can for our own safety.
In these days when workers are hard to find, anything that allows slave drivers to do their thing is going to benefit the good companies in the long run.
I am pretty sure if 1 of your family members does drop and I am not saying dead and they suffer any problems, I think someone will definitely sue disney and all other companies.
Unions? That’s great
for the 5-10% of workers that are part of one. The other 90% just have to choose between their life vs feeding their kids, that’s all.
I think that every person who voted against protections should be required to sit out in the sun for 10hours for 1 week in Aug. I think people who make these decisions should gain some experience around them first before voting. (FL has zero heat protections, btw).
There’s also a huge difference between South FL and North FL, hence the need for local laws.
We shouldn’t need laws that protect human beings from dying on the job, but unfortunately greed and power often prevail over the most basic of human necessities. 🙁
As is always the current( not the past so much) big pockets business, lobbyists, etc. don’t give a damn about the working class people in this state which is a sad state of affairs. The blood of those workers who will die from no heat protections will be eternal heat for those who passed this no-protection law…including this shameless Governor
Amen. Jesus said “whatever you do to the least of these, I will do to you before my father in heaven”.
DeSantis & all others like him, including all who support/vote for them, who choose greed, darkness and evil towards our most vulnerable brothers and sisters, will learn first hand that heat stroke would be favorable to where they’re going.
But God did say it would come from within Christianity and that he’d harden their hearts so that they no longer can tell evil from good. Unfortunately this has been happening right before our very eyes in the last 10 or so years… and that is truly a scary thought.
If they don’t like it then they can work back in the north where they came from. The employees whine way too much in any situation, but they fail to realize it’s better than it used to be! *rubs hands waiting for the trolls, lol*
Have the lobbyists work outside in the middle of the day 8-10 hours a week…I am 100% certain they would regret their decision..This should be removed everywhere it is or people will be dying…
maybe we should send the people that signed this bill to work without water breaks at Disneyland for a day….then maybe they would get the picture…serious idiots
Florida once again leading the nation on showing just how much of a sh*t show conservative leadership is. Wait until Mickey drops dead in front of a bunch of children and cameras. Disney won’t care, nd DeSatan will blame the worker for being weak. Will the last same person leaving Florida please close and lock the gate when you leave, we don’t want these evil people spreading around after the state goes under the Atlantic.
Ever since DeSantis became governor Florida has gone down hill. I went to Disney when I was younger and loved it. Now desantis is screwing everything up. I want him gone.
That’s not what the law states, that’s how the media is feeding it to you. The law prevents rigid predetermined break schedules and allows employers to make that determination as weather conditions change.
This is DeSantis who signed a law a few weeks ago as to no rest breaks or water breaks for anyone anywhere in Florida, no matter what the temperature or humidity. Miami/Dade county was trying to pass a law that mandated it for people working outside but the GOVERNOR put the brakes on it.
All of you folks screaming “UNION” are acting like this law forbids employers from providing heat protection for workers. It’s the opposite, it allows employers to provide as much heat protection as necessary instead of a set rule…a rule that would allow employers to ignore heat protection needs of workers because they hadn’t met some arbitrary metric the rule dictated.
Pay attention to what’s really going on instead of what the left wing media is lying to you about.
You missed the part that said employees were dying feom the heat.Laws are often put in place to protect those who are vulnerable.Do you really expect these companies to put humans before profit when driven by greed?
OUTRAGEOUS! Typical Desantis (Disaster) BS! UNIONS NEEDED N O W!!! Really Disney, you enormous losers. I expected more from y’all. But again, against the rich and powerful only the unions can get your privileged, air conditioned asses back in order. Can we turn off their ACs & empty out those water bottles on them, someone, please?
Why do Gen Z’rs need a law to mandate when to get a drink of water? There is no law denying them the opportunity to get a drink. The idea of taking care of themselves seems foreign to them.
every single employee who is forced to work in the heat needs to walk off. Close that lace down. I’m seriously considering cancelling my Disney subscription. It seems this company just continues to go over to the dark side.
Many states are pushing this law so not just Florida. Many business such as construction, supply chains, food production, etc. would be shut down 6 to 8 mths out of the year. I do not know 1 company that does not provide or allow water. This is just Government trying to take control again. If people do not like it they can find new jobs.
As the parent of an outdoor cast member at Epcot, I was highly concerned with this ruling. Would Disney really enforce it, especially with the scathing heat we already have this spring? The outside air is extremely humid & the temperature is most definitely higher than usual – more like oppressive July weather. You walk out of your house and immediately have air sucked from your lungs, and the humidity makes you want to take another shower. Yeah, it’s THAT kind of hot & I’m grateful to say that Disney still has a heart for their cast members. From my son’s experience, the team leaders and coordinators have been nothing but sympathetic. They can carry the regulation type water bottles attached to their belts. Disney makes cool water available for them in an outside discreet locations. There are free cold water bottles for cast members going backstage. They have rotated cast members around, so they can go inside to the air conditioning periodically. If a cast member is feeling the effects of the heat, they’ve allowed cast members to sit in the AC until they feel stronger. If they don’t, he’s seen cast members be sent home with care and concern. Disney is taking care of their cast members, so to my experience, this is a false claim.

some of these people are so dumb to realize they already have a union
Lou
Kg
Disney is unionized.

Why do Gen Z’rs need a law to mandate when to get a drink of water? There is no law denying them the opportunity to get a drink. The idea of taking care of themselves seems foreign to them.

When the boss says work and don’t take breaks, it comes down to needing laws to make them behave in a manner befitting a human being

every single employee who is forced to work in the heat needs to walk off. Close that lace down. I’m seriously considering cancelling my Disney subscription. It seems this company just continues to go over to the dark side.

Younrealize this site bashes Disney. Hate to be the one to tell you but Florida is not the inly state pushing this law and all.are failing.
Kg
