Chris Pratt: From Little-Known Actor to Blockbuster Roles

Chris Pratt has been a household name since he won the hearts of fans as the adorable–and often blissfully oblivious–Andy Dwyer on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, a role that proved wildly successful for the series, as well as for Pratt, as it served as his breakout role in Hollywood.

Pratt’s character was originally included as a means of bringing in Ann Perkins, played by actress Rashida Jones. The creators of the series didn’t plan on fleshing out the character of Andy Dwyer, and he wasn’t originally intended to become a mainstay in the series.

Co-creator of Parks and Recreation, Michael Schur, once said that their plans “originally conceived of Andy as a character who would fade away after the first six or so, but Chris was so great we had to make him full-time.”

In short, Chris Pratt, who was relatively unknown in Hollywood when he landed the role of Andy Dwyer, proved to be so good and so believable in the role that fans of the show, as well as the cast and crew, embraced him, and the show’s creators knew they had to keep Dwyer (and Pratt) in the series.

During his time on Parks and Recreation, Pratt also landed the role of Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord. in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, giving fans even more things to love about him.

But in recent days, many have taken issue with Pratt, as well as his wife, author and philanthropist Katherine Schwarzenegger, for actions they’ve taken in Los Angeles. Though Pratt has built his career and fanbase in Hollywood from the ground up, the actor has come under fire for his recent decision to destroy a Los Angeles mansion that doubles as a gem in architectural history.

The Destruction of an Architectural “Gem”

Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, who met at church in 2018 and married a year later, recently purchased and demolished a historic 1950s mansion to make room for a sprawling 15,000-square-foot farmhouse, and their decision has enraged architectural enthusiasts and others, many of whom have taken to social media to share their disbelief and shock.
The couple reportedly paid $12.5 million for the property, called the Zimmerman House, in 2023. But shortly after purchasing the midcentury Brentwood home, which was designed by modernist architect Craig Ellwood in 1950.
The home, located at 400 North Carmelina Avenue in Los Angeles, California, was recently owned by Hilda Rolfe, the widow of Sam Rolfe, the co-creator of The Man from UNCLE television series, which centered around the theme of international espionage and aired on NBC from 1964 to 1968. Pratt and Schwarzenegger purchased the 2,770-square-foot single-story home in an off-market sale.

The Zimmerman home was once featured in Progressive Architecture magazine and has long been regarded as an important piece of architectural history. In an article titled “Celebrity Ownership Spells Demise for Iconic Modernist Home” from the Think Real Estate Group, author Dave Robles notes the now-demolished home’s historical significance.

“[The destruction of the home] has sparked discussions about architectural heritage and the balance between property rights and preserving significant cultural landmarks,” Robles writes. “The story of the Zimmerman House, from its creation to its demolition, serves as a reminder of the challenges in preserving architectural heritage amidst changing times and priorities. It underscores the need for a collective effort in valuing and protecting our cultural landmarks for future generations.”

The grounds that surrounded the stunning home were curated by famed landscape designer Garrett Eckbo, and though the home wasn’t large, it has been described as a “gem” in the architectural community.

Pratt’s Plans For the Property

Pratt and Schwarzenegger are currently working with architect Ken Ungar to build a two-story, 15,000-square-foot farmhouse on the property grounds.
The couple also obtained permits to build a three-car garage and a poolside ADU, or accessory dwelling unit–an additional structure that is often equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and other living and family areas.

The Decision to Demolish Has Cost Pratt Some Fans

The Zimmerman home, which was designed by architects Craig Ellwood and Emiel Becsky, has long been admired by architectural enthusiasts and historians, and because of the home’s historical importance, many of them are unhappy about the demolition.

But even those outside the architectural community–many of them fans of Chris Pratt–have posted comments online about the destruction of the home, and sadly, some of those Pratt fans would likely classify themselves as former fans now.

One user referred to the couple as “clueless.” Her post reads, “A mid-century stunner replaced by a modern-day faux farmhouse. Some are so clueless.”

Another user heard the news and apparently no longer considers Pratt a “lovely person.”

“And here’s me thinking what a lovely person he was as the Andy Dwyer character when watching the earlier seasons of Parks and Rec,” she wrote. Yet another user posted, saying that the couple’s decision “just killed” the “ounce of respect” she had for Pratt.

Location, Location, Location

The property is located just across the street from Schwarzenegger’s mother, journalist and Kennedy family member Maria Shriver. It is also just a walk away from the mansion that was featured in the 1990s sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, starring Will Smith.

Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger plan to move into the new farmhouse with their two young daughters, Lyla and Eloise, but until the new home is ready, the family is still making their home at their mansion in Pacific Palisades, which is currently on the market for $30 million.
