Marvel newcomer Sydney Sweeney had some strong things to say about her role in Sony Pictures’ ill-fated Madame Web (2024) and took to the most public platform to share them — live TV.

After a turbulent year at the box office for superhero movies — with Marvel Studios’ The Marvels (2023) and DC Studios’ Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) both failing to make back their production budgets — it looks like 2024 isn’t shaping up to be any better.

Although confidence in Madame Web — the latest addition to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) — was never exactly high, to begin with, it’s safe to say that moviegoers were still surprised by just how much of a disaster the actual story was, landing it an abysmal critics’ score of just 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite having a seasoned director at the helm (S.J. Clarkson), common complaints surrounding Madame Web include villain Ezekiel Sims’ (Tahar Rahim) glaringly out-of-sync VDR, its shaky cinematography, and the less-than-inspired performance of its lead actress, Dakota Johnson, among others. Many others.

Throughout the Madame Web press tour, Johnson, who plays the titular clairvoyant, Cassandra “Cassie” Webb, seemed to be well aware of the fact that the superhero flick was far from her best work. And now, Julia Cornwall actress Sydney Sweeney is making her true feelings known.

Sweeney, best known for her role in HBO’s hit drama series Euphoria, hosted the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, where she hilariously addressed rumors of her on-set affair with her Anyone But You (2023) co-star Glen Powell before starring in hilarious skits like “Hooters Waitress.”

During her opening monologue, Sweeney also jokingly disowned Madame Web, quipping, “You might have seen me in ‘Anyone But You’ or ‘Euphoria’ — you definitely did not see me in ‘Madame Web,'” before going on to detail her many issues with her character’s wig.

Check out Sydney Sweeney’s opening monologue on Saturday Night Live below:

Funnily enough, Johnson also poked fun at Madame Web while guest hosting Saturday Night Live last month, joking that it’s “in the Marvel Universe and it also stars Sydney Sweeney. So, it’s kind of like if A.I. generated your boyfriend’s perfect movie.”

It’s hard to say if Sweeney actually has hard feelings regarding her Madame Web role, or if she’s simply addressing the fact that it’s one of the lowest-grossing SSU movies of all time, barely scraping past Jared Leto’s equally unremarkable Morbius (2022) at the box office with a haul of $91 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $80 million.

Either way, one thing’s for sure: it sounds like these web-slingers aren’t getting a sequel anytime soon, as Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson seem to have truly and properly surrendered to “superhero fatigue.”

Sony Entertainment’s Madame Web is currently playing in theaters.
