the scooters are out of control, especially with people who don’t normally use them so they are driving them for the first time. My husband had the back of knees crashed into last time we were down, knocking him forward into the curb. The scooter “driver” told him to get out of the way. I’m sorry, we have the right to walk in the area too. Just like cars, scooters should yield to pedestrians.

    1. They should not yeald to pedestrians because they are on a scooter. They would never get anywhere. Someone with physical disabilities has as much rights to be there as you. My friend needed one. Shr tried to avoid people but they cut her off over & over. The scooters do not have brakes. So when someone cuts her off it is impossible to stop suddenly.

Having been this from both sides. Before I needed a scooter when I could walk normally to needed a cane to get about to now needing a scooter. BOTH sides need to pay attention. People walking or scooting be aware of others. My mother was so awful we took her scooter away from her. Just pay attention to what is around you and be kind to one another.

  4. Sorry, Mary, mobility scooters do have brakes: The driver just needs to let go of the steering tiller and it stops automatically. Good thing! (Smiles!) I turn down the speed whenever I’m with people (stores, theme parks, etc.). Yes, you can control the speed! I’ve never had an incident as yet, even though people look me in the eye and walk directly in front of me. I expect it so I’m never surprised. These scooters are life-changing in that I’m still in the game but a certain amount of skill and ‘awakeness’ is required. People forget to turn down the speed they go and if they did, all would be a lot better!

  5. P.S. I shoulda said that I’m 71 yrs old with progressing arthritis going thru most of my body (but not the hands…go figure!) and I go to D’Land regularly. I have a great time! I decorate my scooter and kids ask me to do wheelies! (No, that’s impossible, but it’s so cute when they ask.) Life is to enjoy as long as possible!

  6. 5 years ago, we went to WDW and did the Keys of the Kingdom tour. One lady was using a scooter and on our way to the Haunted Mansion she ran up the back of the leg of a guest scraping off a huge chunk of skin. She just kept going and indicated they should have moved out of her way. It was busy and just didn’t care. This wasn’t the only time she hit or nearly hit someone
