Disney isn’t going to let anyone do anything with that version of mickey. Theve been quietly adding steamboat Willie to everything as a trademark. The whistle and animation is played with their logo before every movie now and many official merchandise include some variation of the scene. Not to mention the name “Mickey Mouse” itself has always been trademarked. Trademarks, unlike copyrights, only expire when the company stops using it. So even showing the original short film in an unaltered state would violate their trademark.

Have you seen all the art, movies, and unofficial merch in the world portraying all versions of Mickey? Even “Fine art” galleries sell artwork that was not made by Disney but contains images of the mouse. Absolutely nothing changes by this version ending its copyright
