The Walt Disney Company is currently celebrating its 100-year anniversary, with special celebrations and events scattered all across the world and in various forms of media. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures recently released its newest film, Wish (2023), which acts as a culmination of a century of storytelling and animation. However, The Walt Disney Company has been struggling recently, facing challenges that no one could have predicted just a few short years ago.
Aside from political battles with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the massive global shutdown caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, Disney also faced struggles internally, with one battle coming to a head in late 2022. We’re, of course, talking about when Disney revealed that Bob Iger would be taking over the role of CEO from Bob Chapek. This bombshell shook us to our core and was even more surprising considering that Bob Chapek had just been granted a contract extension several months prior, a move that was voted in unanimously.

The transfer of power and leadership between Bob Iger and Bob Chapek was swift and unexpected, with the longtime Disney Company veteran stepping down as CEO after serving for 15 years. Bob Chapek worked at The Walt Disney Company for many years until taking over for Iger in early 2020. While it can be debated how fair a hand Bob Chapek was actually dealt, taking over one of the largest corporations in the world months before a global pandemic would shut the entire world down, Chapek cemented himself as one of, if not the most controversial figure in The Walt Disney Company’s long and treasured history.
Disney CEO Bob Iger recently admitted that he was extremely disappointed in the way The Walt Disney Company was managed after his original departure and the path Chapek led the company in during his brief tenure.
“I was disappointed in what I was seeing in the transition period and while I was out. I worked hard at distancing myself from it.”

Bob Iger certainly had his own trials and tribulations, but Bob Chapek seemed to consistently anger and disappoint fans and guests of all ages. Whether it was the price hikes, the shrinking portion sizes, or the overall lack of new and fresh content to explore, fans criticize Chapek’s every move.
However, Chapek would not last long, with Bob Iger stepping back into the CEO role in late 2022, sending shockwaves throughout the Disney community. The relationship between Bob Chapek and Bob Iger grew incredibly strained over time and was heavily detailed in various interviews. Chapek was reportedly “furious” with how the whole thing went down.
Bob Iger will serve as CEO of The Walt Disney Company until 2026, when a successor will be named.
