Good to see that journalists with common core grammar can still get jobs but geez, what an embarrassment.

I do see where the movie was not based on truth. It was based on a romanticized version of what happened and on a book John Smith wrote because the people in England wanted to hear more about her. Pocahontas was so different and free spirited she was alienated from her own tribe and father. But she was also respected because she helped to keep the peace between her tribe and the people of Jamestown. She was a very important historical figure and there was alot that she did. I do not think this movie should be erased or banned. Without it I and many other people wouldn’t have learned about Pocahontas and her history or even some of the history of other Native Americans. I understand people not liking this movie but I think this movie helps to open a door way to information and what really happen, I think it helps people to be more interested in Pocahontas and the history.

    1. Tim Boyd

      Very well put

    2. John S.

I like you perspective and I agree with you.

  3. Bill

Maybe if/when Disney returns to making movies geared towards what is probably 90% of their fan base, meaning traditional families, instead of continuing to bow down to the woke left people might actually go see their movies again!

  4. RickTR

Don’t people have anything important to worry about anymore?

    1. Naloni

      That’s what I’m saying.

  5. I feel that although the facts regarding Pocahontas’s life are real and tragic, i feel the Disney company did not purposely create her life on screen as a whitewashed version of her life. The movie is fiction and is a story of strength and resilience to females everywhere. If you look for something bad, you will find it and if you look for something good, you will find it. The choice is yours. I choose the good and love this movie very much.

  6. Tim Boyd

    Is it historically inaccurate? Yes

    Should it be banned? No

  7. No don’t ban the movie. Let it be known how inaccurate this movie is. How Native Americans were treated, how the Native Americans had their land was stolen from them, show how they were murdered and beaten, this movie is disgusting.

  8. Devin Calem

That movie didn’t make any sense as a love story version. When learns the original true story, it was such a shock! Pocahontas and John Smith as together? Wow, that is disgusting!

  9. Brian Roche

    Absolutely not

  10. Brian Roche

Absolutely not Disney should not banned Pocahontas

  11. Rosa

These Redditors are beating a dead horse. I’m not just saying this as a fan of Disney’s Pocahontas, but from common sense. That movie came out 28 years ago. After that long, it’s time to let it go (that’s not a Frozen reference).

  12. Sean Golden

As a member of the Seneca-Cayuga tribe of Oklahoma this has never
been a problem for me or my family.
Its been(historically) hard to see or find a Positive representation of ANY
Native American on film,so If we don’t have an Issue then all the “Woke ” you have ZERO right to be upset.

  13. No they shouldn’t!!
I love Pocahontas she’s wonderful and I love her!

    No banned!

Keep her and be loved forever!

  14. Andrew

The film is great. Back in 1995 my daughters all had Pocahontas decor. None of the Disney fairytales hold true to the original novels. Leave the film alone

  15. Amelia Murdock

I don’t think it should be banned. Censorship isn’t the answer

  16. Rebecca Carr

Do we want to tell kids about rape & other atrocities??? No. Children need hope & positive messages, which I think Pocahontas gives them. When kids are older they can find out the negative truths but kids shouldn’t be hit with negativity at a young age or we risk more mental illness & suicides Pocahontas is a great story & my great grandson has loved it all these years & he is 15 now & Autistic. Do we want to ruin each generation with truths they are not mature enough to understand???NO. Keep Disney as it is with sweet, hopeful, positive stories for kids. Sure, there are 2 sides to every story but kids need the hopeful & positive side when they are growing up before cynicism takes them over!!

    Hands off Pocahontas!!

  17. I love this movie so much and I never, ever want it to be banned.

  18. Jay

It’s tragic how Pocahontas lives her life but she’s in a movie that celebrates her and gives new life to her. If this movie wasn’t made then no one would ever know her at all.

  19. Never, ever ban Pocahontas. It’s one of my all-time favourite Disney Movies!!!! If it does get banned, I’ll never, ever forgive myself!!!!

  20. Nick

People need to stop reading so much into Disney movies. It’s just that it’s a Disney movie. People need to get over themselves and realize that it’s entertainment not only for children but adults as well. It’s not accurate history it’s simply a movie. No one ever claimed that it was historical documents, or true fact it’s a cartoon, for Pete’s sake’s.

  21. Jenn

    Man,can we just not??

  22. Jenn

I can’t read any of the comments, but I believe there is a whole lot more going on to focus on than the constant banning and “cancelling” of things. It’s out of hand. That being said, Pocahontas was one of my favorite cartoons growing up, and if it wasn’t for the cartoon I would have never knew who she was to research her as an adult.

  23. Mike

    Nope

  24. Gabe

Pocahontas is one of my favorite Disney movies. And it’s inspired by a historical figure but it’s not and it’s not meant to be an accurate depiction of the past. If that’s the case then anything inspired by something real shouldn’t exist

  25. Angelica Bower

I am native American and I love Pocahontas. Cartoons are made for kids. At least they know who she is. When they grow up they can learn the truth. People stop poking at every little thing. Kids don’t need to know the true story. Again it’s a cartoon. Being native American I am proud Disney gave kids a native princess to look up to.

  26. David: The Duke of Everything

No it shouldn’t be banned. If you don’t like it or feel it’s bad for whatever reason, don’t watch it. It’s that simple. Cartoons aren’t meant to teach history lessons.

  27. Earl

So should Hamilton be cancelled for it’s inaccurate portrayal of American history?

  28. Malik

Well, you’ve got to remember that this was created during the mid-’90s(1995). So, there’s really no point in trying to change anything now.

  29. Robert

Perhaps there are people who want to watch “Pocahontas” and would be entertained by it.

I am fed up with censorship, bullying, and thought policing of the America hating, Bill of Rights hating Stalinists who call themselves “Liberals”.

  30. Jim

Wait a minute! I can’t tell if Pocahontas is woke or not.

  31. Eric Simpson

Banned? No. It (and, say Song of the South) should be made available, but with a huge disclaimer as part of the film about the inaccuracies and the real history, and also with additional materials as supplements to the film.

  32. Clifton Dillon

Please stop referring to these whiney crybaby’s as fans.
Pocahontas is a kick ass film that is historically inaccurate but pushes you to want to know more.
    Stop erasing Disney history..
1995 was the year Pocahontas came out and I was 15, I’m 43 now and it’s still my favorite Disney film.
Real fans want this film to have more exposure not for it to be tucked away.

  33. HEIDI

In my opinion to those who want the Disney version of Pocahontas to be removed for good, why not use your brains and think for a moment that if they had made it historically accurate, you all would have come back on them for making a movie about child rape and marriage. They changed things to keep it safe for children to watch. Why is everyone so against Disney now? Everyone is wanting things changed. Grow up……not everything in life has to be historically accurate or be what you want it to be. Why not jist destroy EVERY SINGLE movie ever made by Disney because they are all FICTIONAL MOVIES. Since people are upset over Pocahontas why not be upset about making all the movies FICTIONAL.

  34. James

Great film, such good songs. Yes historically inaccurate, but doesn’t mean that the next generation of kids should be deprived of watching it. If we’re going to ban all films that aren’t historically accurate then we’ll only ever have fictional films going forward. Any film that depicts a historical figure wrong I guarantee you someone somewhere is offended by it and will want it banned. Better not release Napoleon later this year, I’m sure I can find some way that my Corsican heritage will be offended.

  35. Mary

    Ha ha

  36. Traci

People just look for things to be mad about. Pocahontas was my favorite Disney movie when I was growing up. I didn’t realize she was a real person until I grew older. I have never used cartoons as historical references.

  37. Well, continue the BS. Of erasing characters and their stories and you continue the decline of Disney.. you get what you deserve.

  38. Eric S

I think maybe give it some context before or at the end of the movie. It’s not ( nor should it be) considered a historically accurate film. Provide links to ” The Real Pocohantas”

  39. Roger Stevens

    No

  40. Naloni

No , let Disney do what they do best provide magic to the world. If you don’t like what they do then DON’T WATCH….it’s that simple, no need to get your undies in a wad.

  41. Christine Patton

It’s a cartoon. People need to stop taking cartoons so seriously. I’m part Native American, I know the history and have never taken the cartoon seriously. All movies are made not accurate. Even historical movies aren’t 100% accurate.

  42. Britt

It’s an option to watch. I like the movies regardless. If people have a problem with it then don’t watch them.

  43. sfcpres

It’s a cartoon movie not a history lesson. For those that complain please be aware that a little boy from India did not actually engage in dialog with a tiger, bear, monkees, wolves, panther, or snake. A woman didn’t live in the forest with 7 little men & talk to the animals. Automobiles don’t speak. Sherlock Holmes was not a mouse. There are no super heroes or Avengers. It’s called fantasy for a reason. If you think any of it is real or factual based go to a library and read things that truly are in the Non-fiction section.

  44. Walt

The 2nd paragraph is the key to all this b.s. “Pocahontas tells a fictional story based on a real-life Native American woman.” It is not an accurate portrayal of Native American interaction with early European settlers because it is fiction! It was not made as a documentary because the truth would not bring children and families in, or sell billions of dollars of stuffed animals and toys. I’m tired of an out of control “cancel culture” that demands removal of movies and books based solely on their not being created the way a group wants them to be. And don’t get me started on remakes that change everything just to pander to the “make it accurate” side as well. Just my thoughts.

  45. Zeena

Are we actually helping the cause of Native Americans or are we trying to eliminate them from the public eye by trying to rename or erase everything that is associated with Native Americans? While Pocahontas is wildly inaccurate most Disney films are. They aren’t historical documentaries they are meant to entertain through storytelling. It’s called fiction for a reason. The hope is that conversations can be had and that research done.

    1. Emcd

Why didn’t Disney simply create a fictional native women to go with the completely fictional story? There’s so little indigenous representation in film or otherwise it makes sense that majority of views would assume the story follows the same arc of the truth. But for however many people watch this film and their interest is peaked to take a deeper dive into the real truth, 3x as many will lock this away as knowing the general idea of the early settlers of Jamestown and build on that false narrative. Yeah when taken in the context of being one children’s cartoon it’s easy to be cavalier about the affects. One Disney cartoon from the 90s shouldn’t be the basic understanding of the general American population’s understanding of Pocahontas but it sadly is! I think if we could have more conversations around that we could move past cancel culture on BOTH sides.

  46. Gary

Give me a Break, it’s a flipping cartoon, omg, i cant believe anyone Who is willing to say it bothers them, i have some advise…just Dont watch it, if it bothers you…omg

  47. Jacob Allen

“Pocahontas” should continue to make profit and should not be banned! I even hope that they can make a live action film with elements from the 1995 film and the actual story, and bringing back Alan Menken and those good, fun and memorable songs from the 1995 film.

  48. Anonymous

… The other fairy tales are based off other people’s tragic lives as well but Disney fairy tales have happy endings. Why would you want a kid to watch those bad things. You can research later if you are interested in their real lives so no to banning for me.

  49. Beowulf

Its a kid cartoon they don’t need to be introduced to the harsh world. Hints why it wasn’t as accurate as everyone wants because it a cartoon. They are never telling the right stories. For the audience of kid they want to show happiness and love not horror and sadness. If you want yalls kids to see how life really is have them watch a horrors and r rated movies if you want to show them how the real world really is.

  50. Paul

They couldn’t possibly be fans if they are calling for the end of pocahontas. It’s a kids cartoon, not a documentary. Of course it’s not accurate, it has a talking tree, musical numbers and a rascally raccon. Stop being a bunch of whiney Karen’s.

  51. Dan

    Again, nothing but Wolk victimization

this film should be left ALONE!!!

  52. Leslie

While I really want to support a lot of what this is saying and I understand the overall intentions, Pocahontas is one of my favorite Disney movies and I think that it also depicts many positive messages. Also, I disagree at the idea that it made settlement into a fairytale. The settlers were misguided and definitely portrayed as the bad guys. While I definitely agree that not using an actual native who was real and really traumatized would have been a lot sounder of a decision, I still love the movie’s overall message.
Communication is key. We don’t understand one another and never will if all we care about is ourselves and we never try to communicate with others.
Colonizers had/have no respect for the land. A problem we still don’t seem to be able to grasp. Paint With All the Colors of the Wind is my favorite Disney song, for always. Gives me chills.
Also, hello, I believe that she was the first Disney princess to, not only not need to be rescued, but she did the rescueing and rescued the man.

  53. Lauren Palermo

Just leave the story alone. She is portrayed as a heroine who is a woman. Nobody said that it was a historical depiction of Pocahontas. It shoes the colonizers as brutal. But not so brutal that they scare young children.
Many movies are adapted from stories and they use political license. It depicts hope and courage

  54. Test

    Yets

  55. Rob

How about we put an end to the woke fans instead.

  56. John

    Okay sure jan

  57. Denis

NO, the woke are out of control

  58. gdc

    where are the comments?

  59. Chris

Bury it like Song of the South was, never to see the light of day again

    1. Steve

No. Let’s systemically silence the leftists like you and make all studios have their catalogs commercially available. Disney has no right to withhold Song of the South and will be forced to release it by Uncle Sam.

  60. Cameron McElroy

Pocahontas Disney Films were most disappointed from The Walt Disney Company in the future! It needs to be replaced New Animated Herbie Films at some point in the future.

  61. It’s a great movie! Don’t change anything and leave it be, it’s for kids mainly and people that have an imagination.

  62. Absolutely not! Anyone seeing the declining park attendance and each movie flop should realize this PC nonsense is destroying the Disney brand.

  63. Chris

Can’t see other comments .. says there are 62

  64. Dottie

I do not believe it should be banned. It should just be looked at as a fictitious movie. Not every movie needs to be based on a real story. I’m so sick of people trying to take away everything.

  65. Roxane Lipton

For the love of God, people! Get a real life away from social media and canceling anything and everything that comes to your puny little brains. I am not a fan of Disney, BUT THESE ARE CARTOONS FOR ENTERTAINMENT! Please, stop the b.s.!

  66. GeekyGrandma

Disney is NOT and will never be, about historical accuracy, and it’s unfair to expect a cartoon company to do that. They romanticize all their characters. Without the Disney movie, many would have never heard of Pocahontas, or researched her life.
Canceling her would be a disservice.

  67. TacoCat

    Why aren’t comments being shown,?

  68. Ashley

Disney took something tragic and dark and turned it into something for children to enjoy. To me what the Disney Pocahontas represents a young woman fighting to save the place and people that she loves. And that is what the message is that Disney was trying to convey to young kids. Not the nasty horrible side of history. Disney is a family company y do u think there’s not a single f bomb dropped. But like I said this is what I think and also all these Karen’s of the world need to please just stop.

  69. John W

Fictional is the key word here, it’s a fictional story.

If you’re trying to tell a factual story then do that. But don’t confuse Disney fiction with reality.

  70. Who, me?

Good Grief, go do some charity work or something useful instead of all this moronic injustice crap.

  71. Nonya

    Uhm no

  72. Sharon

Maybe if they had used a different name and actually turned it into a fairytale, it might have been acceptable. Sounds like it couldn’t be a Disney movie had the real story been told.

  73. I have mixed feelings about this issue, I have always absolutely loved this movie. It got me intrigued by native American history and at a later age I learned that it wasn’t the real story. I think it’s not ok to romanticize a horrible experience for a historical figure but how else would I have learned about her story. Pocahontas has inspired me throughout my life and I know it has for others too. Thank you for coming to my TED talk

  74. Alexa

Maybe they should simply do a more accurate portrayal (might tone down to fit Disney’s image while still leaving it as historically accurate as possible) in a live action version, don’t use the improper name Pocahontas. She was married to Kocoum at 12-14, married John Rolfe at 17/18 since Kocoum was killed. Was never romantically involved with John Smith as she was 9-11yrs old when they met and were platonic.

  75. Rayven

Personally as someone who loves history and as a dad I love the movies as they are yes they don’t tell the true story of pocahontas but would you really want your kids to learn bout rape at a young age I think not the story is geared to young children and it is a great way to introduce them to the Indian world without all the death and rape if you wanna teach what really happened save it for a home history lesson.

  76. Shannon Smothers

I do not think young people need to see a cartoon depiction of rape and brutality. And I really think people have gone crazy and need to stop all this divisiveness. Most kids movies are fairytales. Kids will find out how cruel the adult world is when they are old enough to handle it. Just let kids be kids. Let them be little as the song by Billy Dean goes. The arguments are made by adults not kids. The movies are made by kids. That’s why they say ‘ Disney Magic’ not Disney reality. Let the kids have some happiness.

  77. Mark

No, a few people on reddit? Wow that’s a major controversy. When are they having a press release and starting petitions? Maybe PETA should look closer at 1,000 and 1 Dalmatians. Maybe they are inviting animal abuse. Looks like Cinderella was mentally insane to talk to mice and think she rode in a pumpkin. Geez.
There are bigger problems in the world.

  78. Cole

I say no it should not be banned by any means. This film is a glorious masterpiece and one of my treasured childhood memories. I grew up watching this as a kid. Sure it may have its differences and similarities, but it doesn’t bother me at all. Despite several differences, a few historical pointers were correct (John Smith was captured by the Powhatan tribe, Governor Ratcliffe led the Jamestown Colony, Chief Powhatan is the father of Pocahontas, his favorite daughter, and the colonists’ mission was to find gold; only to find none in the process). As I said, the movie should never be banned and it would’ve been a bad move if that happened. It should be kept alive for years to come.

  79. Paul W

If every movie based on historical figures or events was banned for not being accurate, there would be very few films ever made.

  80. Jennifer shiflett

Dont give in to this cancel and banning culture if u do ur just helping them kill what walt built and in these times we need walts storries and the legacy he built dont ban or remove any more disney stuff us real fans of walts that have been fans since the alice adventure shorts to today give up on what walt was trying to do bont ban anymore movies and everything disney related Please dont let this cancel/banning culture win

  81. Mason

I’m a history buff and here are some facts:
Pocahontas and John Smith were never in a romantic relationship
Pocahontas married John Rolfe changed her name to Rebecca and converted to Christianity
Governor Ratcliffe wasn’t sent back to England he was skinned alive by native Americans

  82. CJ

As many commenters are stating, no Disney movie is factually accurate. People should look at the positives of how she was portrayed: strong, smart, kind, beautiful, and she rebelled against the traditional expectations of what her tribe (father) wanted… that’s peak feminism right there! Tbh, every time I listen to ‘Colors of the Wind’ it gives me goose bumps. Such a phenomenal song, far superior than ‘Let it go’ imo.
And for those that don’t know their history, many Indian tribes fought and killed each other.

So no, Pocahontas should not be banned.

  83. William Maceri

I think things have gone too far, and we need to relax the Political Correctness We went too far when changing the name of Rice and Pancake surip. Let’s not take ourselves too seriously. Get a grip people, enough is enough. I’m Italian, should I be offended by Franco American Spaghetti, and Let’s not forget Super Mario. I don’t know who’s behind all this but they need to back off, find something else to do, and leave things alone. Or better yet learn to be able to laugh at themselves. Geez-Louis. Leave poor Pocahontas alone.

  84. Misti

No, Pocahontas should not be banned. It is a very good movie.

  85. Rose Ann David

Pocahontas was an icon to the native American people in her time and the movie told that story and you people are making it out to be something horrible but the movie told of a love story and people loved it. Stop trying to dissect a great story.
