This isn’t a shift in cinema, they’re both excellent, thoughtful, clever movies, which would have had huge success regardless of what year they were released. The only shift in cinema would be the mindless movie of Endgame.

Endgame didn’t surpass Avatar though. Disney had to rerelease Endgame with extra scenes in order for the two versions of the movies’ grossing amount to be over Avatar’s. Avatar never had to rerelease and it was in theaters for 34 straight weeks.

Would you rewatch barbie? if not, then no

Okay. Avatar (2009) lost the title of highest grossing film due to Endgame yes. But after it was re-released in cinemas shortly after for a limited-time it jumped back up. Barbie’s success is not indicative of any shift away from blockbusters. As you mentioned Avatar: The Way of the Water was a box office smash in itself and is also resting near the top of the list of highest grossing films.
One film that’s not some wild action rollercoaster thrillride whatever that is quite popular does not necessarily reflect any change or shift in the landscape of film.
Not to discredit Barbie but it is a film that young children can see and that adults alike can also enjoy for its witty and inteligent humour. It’s also based on a brand that’s been popular for many decades now.
Barbie is currently the 20th highest grossing film. Very impressive, but not indicative of any shift just yet.

Settle Avery, a single film does not indicate an “audience switch”. A single $1b movie with feminist undertones does not compete with the other 50+ billion dollar movies based on every other topic. I can almost assure you the next big budget CGI flick will surpass the billion and Barbie, it’s just a matter of audience scale not social change.

It doesn’t indicate a shift of viewership. There is a lack of quality films out. When something like Barbie or Oppenheimer debut movie fans will flock to see it.

I love Avatar I have watched it about 50 times and when Avatar:The Way of Water was released I went to see it at the theater 3 times and have watched it 7 more times since.
I am waiting on Avatar 3 to come out I would much rather see Avatar over Barbie anytime.

Seems a tad late of a story, no?
