animation cels, not “canvases”, would be the proper terminology.

How ironic that your moniker is “BM”, the same as my father’s first two initials! He worked for Disney in the very beginning and may have been one of those animators who handled their own work so heedlessly. But my dad always treated his artwork with utmost respect and care, so I cannot imagine that happening, at least not to his finished products. I am so proud of my dad and the amazing world of magic he created. It allowed me to see the world as filled with potential, magic just waiting to happen, at the stroke of a brush or from any one of many other methods; he manifested his amazing mind so all could enjoy his creations and he did it for the love of his art, and not for money. Perhaps that is one very important aspect which set him apart from other “artists” with Disney at the time: he was a true artist at heart. Thanks dad, for showing me the potential in a blank canvas. It was only as blank as our own imagination.

Thank you for sharing and thanks to your dad for his incredible dreams that made family entertainment for everyone around the world to see

It’s truly sad to see the animation, which many grew up with just disappear. Then reading they used the “cells” to slide across the floor! Really? They had no clue what they really had, when they had them. Just sad.

The animators didn’t understand that they are signing away their entire lives worth of creative thought when signing a contract with Disney. They would never own the creative copyright for any of their works no matter what they were. I can believe that this left them frustrated that they couldn’t make any artwork of their own after being hoodwinked by Disney. I can’t say I wouldn’t have treated my own work the same way after learning I had signed away all of my creative thought and drawings for the rest of my life to Disney. My drawings would feel worthless to me after they owned everything. They couldn’t even go home and make a painting without Disney owning it.

Get real. These artists worked for Disney, so the art they produced and were paid for producing belonged to the company. They no more owned their work product than the person who designs a steering wheel for a Ford owns the steering wheel. If they wanted to own their work product, they shouldn’t have worked for a company that paid them regardless of the plethora or paucity of creative ideas from week to week.

        1. Mike Davis

There were no other options for them. They were unfairly compensated for their ideas that made Disney millions. Disney exploited the fact they had no where else to go and paid them god awful for the work they produced.

      2. Were they forced to sign a contract or were they unable to read? Otherwise I see no reason to be “frustrated” by a situation created by themselves

Animators (and artists in general) are a crazy bunch. That’s how Warner Bros./MGM animator Tex Avery lost sight in one of his eyes, horsing around with other animators at WB.

    3. J

We have the animation, so beyond collectors no one cares about the cells. And it was their property so they can do what they’d like with it. Y’all are silly and trying to make it political when that doesn’t have anything to do with it.

  3. Jeff Henderson

Well if you ever need them redrawn let me know I’ll do it… for a small fee. I know they won’t be originals but next totally the next best thing. I’m the gentle man in green hair when I visit California adventure and draw at the animation studio …I leave a drawing for the animator everything of the joker.

  4. Oz

Well seeing as Disney “owned” them I can’t say I don’t understand. Those animators could never own any of their drawings or creative thought. It was all owned by Disney once they signed that contract which is still true until today. As a creator I would be frustrated knowing that I was hoodwinked by Disney and now they owned all of my creative thought. Why would I protect so.ething being stolen from me? Ma y didn’t understand the consequences of signing a contract until it was too late. That’s why so many animators create adult entertainment of the characters out of frustration towards their contractual servitude to Disney. I can’t blame them for treating it that way. I would do the same thing after learning that all of my creative work for the rest of my life was owned by a money grubbing company.

Believe it or not, at one point ORIGINAL SCREEN USED animation cells were being sold at Disneyland for only close to a DOLLAR A PIECE!!

They obviously had ZERO IDEA the REAL HISTORICAL worth of these cells. The hope exists though, that those souvenir seekers from yesteryear still own, or have passed down, these cinematic treasures. They are probably still out there-albeit not officially owned/preserved by Disney…

    1. Tammie

I had several of those souvenirs!!

Some were framed(the costly ones), some were just in a cardboard sleeve.

No clue if they’re still floating around moms house….guess I will find out after she passes!!

  6. J. Scott

Probably stashed away and hidden from potential seizure by the State of Floriduh

Teacher and wife of a late Florida Feature Animation Studio artist, I understand your titles have to be provocative for us to read and watch adds, but why maligning ALL artists. Please give us facts.I wonder why you generalize 100 %…is the attention grabber?
The Florida Studio was the epitome of an artists’ studio. You could breathe happiness, a sense of belonging , commitment, professionalism, and support, but California or the company closed it down.
During production my husband left the house very early, he loved his job.
You may double check , but the Princess and the Frog was a hybrid.I remember him drawing or cleaning up the alligator at his animation desk in his cave. The studio sold the desks to the animators, so he bought his.
      I have added my voice.

        Thank you. Well said!

They will be lost and I think some of them were Walt’s work and it is a shame. They should have been better care for & protected. I wonder when this happened over time or just in the last few yrs. With all the problems Disney is have I really hope it was not on purpose if it was in the last few yrs!

  8. Tom

That’s OK. Doesn’t make a difference. Old cells mean nothing when current executives are destroying the company

  9. Loring

Welcome to the New Disney. It’s no longer Walt’s Disney. It is Woke Disney and they don’t care any more.

  10. Angel Villamil

It’s a shame that we have allowed this to happen! If anything has proven to be as American as could be, that is Disney! To allow this to be lost is simply impossible! With so much technology and science at our disposal that is simply UNACCEPTABLE!
I and so many Americans have been influenced, very properly, by those many films. I cannot believe this country will not do anything to restore these films and magnificent productions without doing something to restore them!
To allow this to happen is to allow the very nature of our country to be affected!

  11. John

Sadly this is the New ‘DISNEY ‘ and just as the Sad History of The American Art , LACK of True Preservation and Copyright has Allowed this as well Financial Gain/ Loss! If those Who ‘TRULY’ Cared this LOSS OF Animation Disney History WOULDVE BEEN PREVENTED/ PRESERVED!! The Lost ANIMATION WAS the Masterpieces of the TRUE DISNEY MONARCHY by which all others attained to. John Zyss 6/25/23

What a bunch of pigs, Walt-Disney must be turning in his grave. This is very unprofessional, even the constitution is well preserved and it’s older than this art. George Washingtons house is still preserved. I think these cartoonists are under paid people.

    1. Thomas

Disney has come under fire dating back to when I can remember in the 90s with all of the perversion hidden within. There are also a lot of dark undertones denoting it’s child friendly morals and values. It has become a dwelling place of demonic influence and I will not miss it a bit when it FINALLY goes under.

  13. Karen

The artwork was never thought to be lasting. It was the finished film that was important. Saving cels and backgrounds came years later as an added way for Disney to make money and keep the tradition alive. Times change but no one thought at the time that they were destroying something important

Walt is surely turning in his grave over what his once great family and child friendly company has devolved into.

  15. Tarri

That is tragic that so much of the animation art work was lost.

  16. Mimi

I have Steam Boat Willie in 8mm. Loved it as a child.

  17. Jean

Disney needs to get back to those cartoons they used to make.

  18. John

I can see that the people that own Disney now would do it but not then.

  19. Jgood

Woke and going.broke now. Walt would shut it all down.

  20. Animation cels, the originals, not mass produced serigraph cels, are priceless works of Art. The artists who created the drawings, the inkers and painters who created the cels, were extremely talented men and women who loved what they created. I find it very hard to believe that any of them purposely destroyed their creations.
I’ve collected Animation cels for many years including Disney cels as well as those created for tv shows other than Disney. Each cel is a one of a kind masterpiece. I can’t imagine how anyone would destroy such beauty.

  21. Kathleen

I’m glad Walt is not here to see what his name has been deteriorated into. If you think the old artists were careless… Now they have all this tech and no imagination. They have make movies from old fairy tales and trash them out for the sake of a wicked culture. Innocents as been exchanged for politics and the almighty dollar. Shameful. Dust off the old multiplane camera and make something worth seeing!

  22. Agnes

Poorly explained. I don’t know what exactly happened or how it matters to finished products.

I met and became friends with an amazing British gentleman name Walter Arnell, in Tucson, AZ in the 90’s. He had a beautiful house on 5 secluded acres in the middle of North Tucson. He was a 1930’s U.S.C. grad that became an editor for Disney. His house walls had a large number of working drawings from all the early Disney classics. I felt very fortunate to have made his aquaintance. His family must have them now. Thank you Walter, for befriending an audio eng. apprentice.

Tuscon is one of the major trafficking hubs, and Disney was heavily involved.

  24. Mykee

OMG! Another human being, lol. Who learned to use “Woke”, as a subpar slang vocab. Maybe I’ll have to try and use some pixie dust to go back in time before some people became sheep. I know this may be some tough sprinkling. Oh my, pixie dust everywhere! Hold on, I think some dust got in my nose! DANG IT!
It didn’t work. Must be because the governor I’m forced to live under, only has one favorite word in his vocabulary. Like a child who overheard and learned a dirty word. Now spouting the word in almost every thing he hates.
Now can it just be that he has made it ok for people to basically hate one another. I was raised to be diversified in life and to treat people how i may want to be treated. Regardless if it is the way I live my life. Here I go.. sprinkling more! Nope American humanity is still in the crapper! Must be because the current Florida government is the root of Wokinisim. Yep, so proud of my Florida! Disclaimer, this was sarcasm.

  25. Ohhhh please, they really expect people to believe this BS. They’ve been selling it all on the black market. As the evil on Earth are pulled into the light and stopped, they will sell off their assets in the dark of night. Disney overall is an evil child trafficking business.

You missed the point. Disney movies always have an agenda now. People go to the movies to be entertained not lectured.
