    The story is a good one, but to present it to an audience creates problems. If you stay true to Hugo’s original work, you risk upsetting special interest groups or alienating members of your potential audience. If you water it down to make it more “acceptable” then the story loses it’s impact. You lose either way, and that negativity does not put paying audience members in the seats.
    It can be done though with positive results: Dennis DeYoung from Styx wrote a musical that was a little truer to Hugo’s book. It has been staged three times, most recently in 2022 and had won many awards.
