As a hater of Disney’s live-action remakes, I would just like to say…

      CRY MORE!

OMG THEYRE AWARE OF THE TRANS ALLEGORY OF THE STORY OMFG

    3. Jeremy

Looks like it’s selling. So much for “go woke go broke.” LOL. Here’s an idea – don’t like it, don’t watch it.

      1. Batman

Cool story now adjust it for inflation.

      2. Albert Becerra

        Ok

    4. Albert Becerra

Sounds like alot coping and damage control you’re doing there

On the one hand, I’m sad that Disney’s live action remakes are still making money, and now look to be unstoppable. But, as a guy who LOVES it when the “Go Woke Go Broke” crowd are proven wrong, I am ELATED by this news!

Same. The meltdowns will be priceless

Hate to bust your bubble but in 1989 $6 million was easily like at least twice the amount that $14 million is in 2023. Especially with the population being only 5 billion then and at least 8 billion now…with Disney’s disingenuous and excessive self-promotions to top it all off. So I doubt this is precisely a fair fight.

The original Mermaid made may have only made $6.1M in its opening weekend ($15.8M adjusted) but the film was only released in 994 theaters in its opening weekend vs. The new one’s likely 4,000+ . Also if you include the 1998 re-release the original had legs, and ended its run with $111.5M domestic and $222 3 M worldwide. ( Which is $292.1M domestic and $582.3M worldwide adjusted) The mew one can hit those numbers, however it’s also worth noting that the original had a $40M budget whereas the budget the new one is reported as being in the $200M range) Definitely puts the mumbers in perspective.

The people who don’t understand that movie prices have quadrupled (or more) since the original, and movies are much more front-loaded are amusing. The fact is, if you read what actual Disney insiders are saying, they are very concerned that both this and GOTG 3 are bombs. Wait and see.

    3. Albert Becerra

      Buzz light year?

  3. Backcountry164

I don’t think the author understands what the word “officially” means. These are projections. Nothing will be official until the weekend is over. Obviously.

    1. Merliah

I don’t care if it is a “success” or not. Scariel will never top my gorgeous Ariel either way.

Well seeing as how the original came out in 1989 it’s expected that a movie coming out in 2023 will make more money. Or also cost more money to make. What would make this a success is if the ratings were better. You can make all the money you want on one movie but if you’re critically known for a failing film no one will rehire you.

    1. FoodForThought

      It also cost* Typo

Dude I dare say that the Aladdin live action looks better than this does. Is Disney like clean out of New Disney princess character ideas like i dont know what the staff at Disney is getting paid for…??? They decided to stop at Moana, Tiana and Encanto??? Is that it?? Cuz I wanted to see new characters. My two favorite movies are Moana and Princess and the Frog. Live actions are so bad but this one is absolutely so awful it made Aladdin look amazing. Her Dreads have practically no flow..they should of went with a wig since they are portraying a mermaid..I mean her dreads didn’t look wet and they are too stiff to portray a mermaid role..frfr..

  6. Bsickmon

The original ” cartoon” was perfection. This makeover sullied it totally.

  7. Tiffy

$6 million decades ago would be like at least twice as much as $14 million today. Especially if this is liked mostly by young girls who don’t know any better. Nice try though Sir.

  8. Sam

I think it is a great change and I am happy everyone is helping this movie. I buy a lot of new little mermaid things and I love everything about Halles little mermaid I got a tattoo on me I am a big fan .

    1. Rick TR

      A tattoo of what? LBGTQ++++++++++

  9. Pamela

Personally, not a fan of these new live action remakes. That aside, does Disney no longer have any originality? All I’ve seen them produce are politicized remakes. I could care less what nationality your characters are just produce something new and original for a change.

  10. Kankan

I wish we would’ve had an original live action movie first, and then this come out after.

The animated will always be my favorite. 🖤🩷

  11. First and foremost, it is not “racist” for people to criticize role castings and expecting portrayals to be accurate to source materials. While “mermaids” have a deep history spreading across multiple cultures, “sirens” and “mermaids” that we see represented in Hollywood are the ones from Scandinavian lore. Sorry, but Scandinavia historically has been majority white.

There are two viable sides to the argument, “it’s fiction so inaccurate portrayals are fine” and “this is a retelling therefore it should be accurate.” To immediately deem the argument that you don’t like as “racist” is ignorance and hate mongering on your part.

All said, I hope the movie brings life to the story and isn’t a dud as it is unoriginal and Disney has a history of ruining classics with it’s live action remakes.

  12. Don't get it twisted

Hate to be a jerk but this movie hit with so much controversy that I’d be surprised if it failed. It isn’t about going to see the movie because they like it. It’s because they want to prove a point. Yup you made a point. You’re willing to put a young lady of color in a originally white character but, God help if the to white chick plays Nonnie. Yeah making strong points here.

  13. Rose

I respect people’s rights to support the ScAriel aesthetic, I just don’t appreciate being accused of racism for preferring Real Ariel. A lot of consideration and care was invested into creating this classic diva, her unique look and persona was in fact inspired by Sherri Stoner, Christie Brinkley, Alyssa Milano and Glen Keane’s wife Linda. It is understandable to not want to see such a conscientious creation suddenly, senselessly modified and violated. And considering 1989’s human population, amount of existing movie theaters, and what $6 million back then would be worth today – amongst numerous other factors – I highly doubt these calculations are accurate.

  14. Gabby

I never watched it yet but I did watch some of the trailer for it and it looks pretty interesting to watch it might become one of favorite movies

    1. Rick TR

If that’s your favorite movie you are a moron.

  15. BOO THIS STINKS THEY CHANGED ARIEL WHY WHY LIKE WHY I AM SOOOO MAD

  16. Chris Wood

The movie isn’t even our yet. But I’m assuming the writer means advanced tickets sales. And honestly speaking there wasn’t advanced tickets sales back in the 90s and tickets didn’t cost an arm and a leg. And I’d like to see the actual finals after all is said and done. I’m sure Disney spent a fortune in special effects and if they don’t break even with this movie, then the movie is a failure

  17. Rowdy

Ticket prices, the availability of movie theaters, human populations, the general economy, film grossing net worths, the appeal to demographics, attitudes, the economical state of affairs, etc., in 1989 were vastly different that of today. Please do your research before embarrassing yourself with inaccuracies Ma’am. I don’t see how anyone can survive to middle age without even thinking to research properly before they post.

  18. Dimples

With all the investments Disney has poured into their aggressive marketing strategies, whatever this movie will gross will ultimately amount to nothing by comparison. No one wants to see this unless they are part of Disney’s raging woke crusade.

  19. Kitten

It’s only Disney’s almost bullyish marketing tactics that has brought about their so-called success with this farce. Every time I turn around, on every book, T-shirt, coffee mug I see, I constantly stumble upon that Halle seahag getting aggressively shoved in my face.

  20. Rick TR

I hope to God they don’t change the Little Mermaid ride at the theme parks and paint her brown and substitute that hideous crab.

  21. JayfiveGunter

it cost 250 million tomake, and mad only 118 million, 132 million short Thts makee its it a FLOP

  22. JayfiveGunter

The Movie fell 132 million short of what it cost to make. That makes it a FLOP.
