Call me crazy, but I was always under the impression that girls can play boys, boys can play girls. Jews can play non Jewish and Non Jewish can play Jews. It’s called acting because they are actors. You don’t have to be handicapped to play someone who is, but, yes I understand why you may prefer to grant a role to an actor who is typically chosen less. If we literally type cast people, then we’re is the skill or range?

The casting call sheet leaked way back and we all have the see requirements which Locke fit besides being British not American but he’s been having a dialect couch on set. Why drag a young teen for this instead of calling out the major franchise behind this?

Because I wasn’t familiar with Joe, I immediately did a google search when his casting dropped back in November and apparently, he’s from the Isle of Man where a small but significant Jewish community continues to thrive. How do we even know Joe isn’t a Jew himself? If it’d be true, I need some of those Twitter people utter an apology because their online harassment is getting out of control.
p.s.: Are you aware your article is getting spread around online by those who despise Joe to a worryingly extreme amount to justify their online harassment?

To be completely honest, at first I was quite unsure if Locke would be a good Wiccan. Yes, he looks the part (at least in my opinion), is openly gay and even though nobody knows for sure if he is or isn’t Jewish, I doubted his acting skills but apparently he is multiple award nominated (an Emmy nomination is among those, how surreal!) and award winning with his first 2 credits, so I for one am ready!

I’m an old man, and to me, this is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of. IF it was confirmed that a character originally written as Jewish would be portrayed as not Jewish, then yes, have this exact discussion. But getting excited because the ACTOR is not Jewish? WHO CARES? It’s a religion; anyone can play any religion. In general, it’s ACTING — anyone should be able to play anything. SOME casting is offensive (white guys who don’t even try to look like Indians). But as long as it’s persuasive, there is NO need for the actor to share the identity of the role. Jews play Christians all the time. Lawrence Olivier played black people twice. Half the Americans in movies and on TV are played by Brits nowadays. You don’t have to be gay to play a gay role — you just have to be willing to ACT gay. IF the issue was “Jewish actors can’t get any work,” IF the issue was one of discrimination against the actors, then, again, you can have a discussion. IF the issue was “there aren’t enough Jews represented in fiction,” again, have that discussion. But if the WHOLE issue is “they have a non-Jew playing a Jew,” then SO WHAT? And if you think the actor being a non-Jew means the character will be too, then WHY????? Why would you assume that? Don’t you know what ACTING is? It’s pretending to be someone OTHER than yourself. Why SHOULDN’T the character still be Jewish?
