The author wound up, “For a studio that built its name on innovation to rely so heavily on its own back catalog for inspiration is, at best, laziness. At worst, it shows that Disney’s creative well is running dry – and the longer it ignores the backlash, the longer it seems like it just doesn’t care.” Aligns with my sentiments. Saw the film on Disney+ — well, some of it. It is dark. It pays minimal homage to the animated version (top hat and teddy bear). Hook isn’t mean enough to be likable; wound up not being alligator bait, which is the way he should have been finished off. I have no problem with a dusky Tinkerbelle — actress came off well. Peter Pan was more morose teenager than child-like. And I didn’t care for Wendy at all. Well, second Hollywood remakes rarely succeed, so at least this one follows the script.

It seems Disney now has two levels of remakes: those films that take out all the stops for a theatrical release (like The Little Mermaid) and those planned for Disney+ which are good enough. I did enjoy Peter Pan and Wendy but it didn’t really feel special. The enhanced storyline between Peter and James (Hook) was the best surprise. The acting was strong. It’s a shame people keep falsely claiming Disney is woke. Casting a very competent black actress to play Tinkerbell and a talented darker-skinned boy to Plan Peter Pan isn’t woke. To suggest it is to be a bigot.

      Falsely claiming its woke?

They race swapped the main character and made the lost boys ‘inclusive’ to include girls. The same woke and PC stuff that is turning people away from Disney.

Its about time people stopped saying that movies are review bombed when the reality is, people do not like movies where all the effort has gone in to woke diversity instead of casting the best person for the roles and good writing like they used to do

I swear – if I see one more dumbass comment that includes the word “woke,” I’m going to scream. You people seem to think that including characters that aren’t white, male and cis/het is a Bad Thing. Or that being more culturally sensitive (let’s face it, the Indians in the animated version are ghastly stereotypes) is also a Bad Thing. And one question: did ANY of you read the book? It was much darker than the animated version.

        1. A real woman.

What’s a cis. You mean a man or woman?

Definitely agree with Reality Truth – enough already.

    Pedro Pan?

Looks like Inside the Magic is a Disney Yes Man. Disney can do no wrong and what ever they do or say is golden. At least till Disney goes out of business because they keep doubling down in this woke crap. I’ll be over at Universal if you need me. Better movies and now better parks too

I don’t care about the ethnicity of the actors or characters. What ruined the movie for me was their inability to act. Peter Pan is played by a kid who looks like he’d cry if he doesn’t get his juicy juice and cuddle blanky while trying to pull off a care-free boy who’s smug because he’s actually tough.
Jude Law’s “Hook” was pretty good. However, his acting compared to the rest just seemed like he was in a middle-school play with a million-dollar CGI budget.

The bottom line is if you have decent writing, plot, acting then people won’t care about casting. Inserting political, cultural agendas over good plotting guarantees failure.

Why is that considered mean or toxic?

Maybe it’s getting bad reviews because it sucks, and people are tired of the same formula and same lack of effort in these remakes.

  9. What-NOT-to-do

One of the biggest reasons little girls and boys nationwide ate up the story of Peter Pan (especially as portrayed by the Disney animated version and later, live action 2003) was its charm!

This ‘reinvented’ story of Peter Pan is almost entirely centered on Wendy and Hook, and the only real Peter Pan focus is when a character or the audience is expected to bash him. There is no charm and whimsy about a little boy fighting evil pirates to save other little kids (in fact he says he fights because—that’s just how it is), there’s none of the subtle romantic tension between Wendy, Peter and Tink/other neverland characters, and it loses its overall theme in the jumbled mess of macabre the movie so happily likes to point out to the audience again and again.

The character race changes, whatever. I think it does detract from having a “bright haired little boy” because let’s face it, the red on green is ICONIC, but that’s something I COULD overlook if it wasn’t just bad casting.

Jude Law does a good job with a subpar script. It’s not his fault that they re-write for Captain Hook is utterly depressing and unlikeable. Iconic Disney gave us villains we loved to hate, this just… leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

It’s no wonder this didn’t make it to theaters (at least not near me) because I think Disney KNEW it would flop. They don’t seem like they care anymore, and honestly, why should they? Disney is just a grubby cash grab these days, nothing else. After the loss of Walt, Disney has strayed so far from his original vision of fun, wholesome, family entertainment, and no one has been happy with their work except for those who are focused SOLELY on the merits of virtue signaling.
