That’s not true non of the characters were on the floats due to rain. Does anyone on this site fact check stories before they run them

    1. Why does everyone have to hate everything, this a place for kids and adults are ruining it just like they are the reat of the U.S. because no one can contain their hatred for others so they spoil it for everyone else.

        Right on!

I had recently seen a video somewhere of the Moana character attempting to dance. I’m am not Polynesian, but have taken lessons for the last 16 years and wasn’t amused at her attempt. She was doing something related to an uwehe, but I couldn’t tell you what the rest was. I stopped the video because I couldn’t watch anymore. In the making of Moana, Disney went to a very well known Halau called Nonosina. They should have gone back and had their performers get way better acquainted with the proper technique.

Only entertainment. Looked fine to all of us.

Are you Polynesian? That’s probably why you thought it was fine. Maui is a Hawaiian demi-god but the movie portrayed various Polynesian cultures, which I found offensive. I am of Hawaiian and Samoan decent and though there are similarities between the two cultures, they are definitely different. It’s like calling a person of Japanese decent Chinese. The Moana character dancing in the parade was an insult to our culture. If Disney is going to profit from our culture, they should at least get it right! PERIOD!

Chill. Ain’t nobody gonna die. Its a freakin’ dance.

        2. Joshua

Mahelona, nobody said things are done right 100% of the times, but this is just a dance, let’s not blow things out of proportion.
There are dozens of movies that show Colombia (where I am from) as just a big drug cartel, but I am not vomiting negatives things on social media about them, in fact I have enjoyed quite a few of them.
Just chill and focus on positive things.

When was the movie set? When would Maui have lived? Would it possibly have been long enough so that we are watching common ancestors of both? Serious question. Disney could’ve only focused on one single culture. And if they would’ve, people would complain, “what bout us?…why did you only focus on thaaaaat culture?” No matter what they do, somebody will complainm

Hello! My family have been involve in the Hawaiian community for 20 years. I also taught hula for many years. My kids grew up taking hula lessons under a Kumu Hula (Hawaiian Hula Teacher). You said here that Disney consulted the group Nonosina as reference for the movie. The problem is Moana is a Hawaiian character. The group Nonosina is a Polynesian dance group that uses Tahitian as their main dance. “Hula” which is the Hawaiian word for “dance” that originated from the Hawaiians. I saw the short video of the Disney dancer and she was doing some Tahitian moves. I understand why the Hawaiians had an uproar about this. People need to understand that Hula is the Hawaii traditional dance and Tahitian is the Tahiti’s traditional dance. Those are two different culture.

I find it funny that they got offended by an authentic type dance but isn’t offended by them supporting the lgbtq. More worried about a culture than our babies

  4. Danielle

I could be wrong but doesn’t Disney choreograph the steps they do in the parades?

    1. L

According to the comment above, Disney consulted the group Nonosina which is a Tahitian group. The dancer did some Tahitian moves. Tahitian is the dance of Tahiti and not Hawaiian. Moana character is Hawaiian.

Everyone lives to be offended now , period.

      Down with cancel culture!!

      So true!

  6. Cultural Studies PhD

My PhD is in Cultural Studies, and full disclosure I’m a gay white male. However, Disney has a pretty long history of appropriating cultural stories, images, and other forms of art to turn a profit. It’s a corporation. I don’t expect Moana to represent anything accurately. I didn’t expect Merida to be a representation of my Scotts-Irish ancestors. Tiana isn’t the representation of African American or Black experiences. Pocahontas got almost everything historically wrong. If you expect Disney to be an accurate cultural representation of anything, that’s pretty sad. They borrow and steal culture to sell it for a profit. No one is forcing it on anyone. Aside from that, no one person or group of people can speak on behalf of an entire population or culture. If it’s offensive, give them feedback and don’t financially support them. Disney usually sends guests surveys, and they have responsive social media. Showing up as the arbiter of what is and isn’t acceptable in the comments of a fan page is pretty weak. Disney isn’t culture, it’s an expensive vacation.

    1. David Goodwin

      Well said!

  7. Joshua

Remember everyone, our true enemy is cancel culture! Let’s cancel it!

    1. Beau

Yes, CANCEL the cancel culture. Live your own damn life and let others live theirs. If your butt hurt and you can’t handle it, go to your safe space and have a good cry. It’s entertainment for children. Get a real life.

  8. It is a dance based on a cartoon people it is not real life, omg take a pill and chill.

  10. Summer kealoha

That was seriously terrible, you’re probably not Polynesian and can’t notice how bad her dance moves were. Very poor representation of real Polynesian dance.

  11. Susan

You’re worried about culture offense but not concerned about the kids who had to watch Rhianna with her extremely vulgar dance moves at the Super Bowl halftime show????? Seriously?

    1. David Goodwin

      Good point.

  12. Danny

Thankfully She wasn’t removed. She is human, she probably called out sick….

  13. David

Who can afford Disney anymore, anyway?

  14. Javier Castellano

Why didn’t they just hire one of the dancers from the Paradise Cove show that they already had in Walt Disney World? They were experienced, entertaining, and knew the culture better.

Not everyone is going to understand that some Polynesian dances are sacred. And that Moana actress did it badly or wasn’t taught by the right people. It’s the equivalent of a multibillion dollar company hanging and displaying a cross sideways “–l—-” or putting the Virgin Mary in booty shorts and stripper heels and calling it the best they could do to represent Christian and Catholic faith and put it on parade for their park and on the internet for the world to see. Just because it’s not offensive to people outside of those communities doesn’t mean that someone from THAT community doesn’t have the right to feel that way. And if you don’t care, then great. Here’s a trophy. But it’s 2023 and the world honestly deserves better than whatever this was. People from the Polynesian dance community are eager to help and lend their expertise, instead of silencing them, why not listen and gain something from it?

    1. Rachael M.

I’m gonna write a song for the sideways cross and twerking Cardi B Virgin Mary parade called, “This is how we worship.” and it’s going to have the dopest beat and have baby Jesus dolls wearing “don’t let your priest touch me” shirts gonna get launched into the audience. I thank you for that. No hate. Not religious, but hey I did my best. It’s just for entertainment so don’t get offended when I touch something of yours that’s sacred lol

  15. Robin

Sensitive, weak people should refrain from going to Disney. Let the people who love Disney enjoy Disney.
