Yes I have done some pin trading, but only with cast members, never with the sharks. I traded for a set of Disney Transporation Buses. It took a lot of time to look, find, and trade. That it can be half to almost your entire vacation of time. That was it for me unless purchasing a pin from a shop or trading from the resort pin boards.
Yes its fun and a great momento. But dont let it overtake your vacation at WDW or DLR.
The reddit user who mentions only buy direct from Disney. Yes for pins or anything only buy direct from the parks, resorts, shopDianey.com, or Disney merch from Target, Walmart, Meijer, etc… Do not buy from third parties called Disney Shoppers (Disney shoppers requires a whole article on its own) and certainly stay away, be aware of the pin sharks.
At WDW I remember the beginning, the rise of the pin trading phenomenom. At the marketplace (now DisneySprings) the pin traders pavilion store, right by the outdoor theater stage, the sharks lie in wait. Everyday the sharks would be thwre at the tables and chairs with 28″ sized luggage and binders bursting with pins. They would spend all day there. They were so greedy and unethical , Disney first banned them feom the pin traders shop, then took away the seating, then the tables.
These sharks after they were banned from the pin traders shop would pay other people to go into the shop to get their exclusive pins. The sharks would also offer a bunch of junk pins to those who didnt know what they had for their rare pin.
Pin trading clubs formed too, all.over the country. They were just the same, full.of sharks. I went to one local club meeting one time. The members were very elitist and aggresive. If you didnt have pins that were worthwhile, forget it, you were outcasted.
A lot of the sharks were APs. So ues they were in the parks too but not as heavily as the marketplace. There were also WDW resort pin trading events.
One good thing about the pin trading is that the phenomenom still lasts through high points and low pointsand outlasts other fads Disney introduced. Remember the Vinyls? That came and went. The Tsums Tsums, and the latest Nuimos.
Do cast members get annoyed when asked to trade pins?…Yes some do, some dont. It depends how aggressive the pin trader is.
Remember to keep pin trading fun, and more as a keepsake, rather than a competition, with the pin sharks.
