His apology was necessary, but shouldn’t be. The tweet reads as a thoughtful genuine conversational piece or perhaps the prompt for an essay question. Unfortunately, given the hostility and sensitivity around trans issues at the moment there isn’t room for discussions. The debate is being fuelded by two dogmatic ideologies that leave little room for understanding, compromise, or a successful unearthing of valuable and meaningful progression. The conservative-right can stand more steadfast in their arguments as the industries where they rule the roost tend to deal in less public facing endeavors and produce far fewer celebrities. The celebrities they do produce only stand to gain from either digging their heals in or from extending an olive branch. On the liberal-left, traditionally a more fluid and free-thinking trajectory, celebrities have no room to deviate from what is becoming a less mailable, less elastic, less progressive single minded ideology. The new wave of progressives operate on a hardened caricature of what made progressivism such a healthy societal movement. If one cannot converse, discuss, and debate with thesis, antithesis and cothesis one cannot progress and thus stagnates. Stagnation is the precursor to solidifying into conservatism. The new left has lost it’s ability to adapt because we intellectually flinched at the possibility of losing the moral high-ground. The way forward from here is reason and patience. Stop belittling anyone and everyone for their choice of words and work hard to find the meaning in their words. Stop castigating people for their beliefs and engage them. I’m thoughtful debate and understand them and let them undstand you. Never have your mind made-up. Once you’ve made up your mind you’ll start to sink in your own delusions. Don’t apologize for continuing to strive for truth and never acccept truth as vertex of enlightenment.
At the very least, stop attacking your allies and expecting celebrities, idols, and public figures to be greater than human. The right doesn’t scuttle their own ship everytime they spot a barnicle. I hope more left leaning celebrities have the courage to start a discussion.
