As a Fatso-American, I approve of the Tron ride. Disney has accommodated us Chubby-Americans for many years, for example deepening the canal with the Small World ride. Those smaller sized rides keep me motivated to lose weight, like the Harry Potter attractions.
Let me start by saying that I am a larger woman so this response is not coming from someone that is a size 2!
I do not feel outrage over this, as a larger person I realize that not everyone will be able to have the same experience. A ride such as this may not be safe for a larger person, the extra weight in certain areas of the ride vehicle could cause problems, I may not be able to be safely secured….etc. I would much rather not ride or wait for an extra 30 min than end up like the young man who didn’t properly fit in the restraints of the drop ride across town a couple of years ago!!!
I do hope they have a sample ride vehicle for guests to try instead of getting all that way only to find out there are issues when attempting to board!
NO Disney does NOT need to fix this issue. There is no issue. If you’re fat and lazy it’s your fault. No one put that bag of potato chips in your mouth. This is like saying guns kill people. No people kill people. Quit blaming someone else for your laziness. Go out and walk and lose some weight.
My mother used to tell me that people who are brutally honest enjoy the brutality far more than the honesty. You seem to be one of those people. I am not saying your fundamental point is incorrect, but your wording seems hateful.
I think if his comment’s hateful, it’s likely due to the excuses made for why they’re overweight and not taking appropriate steps to correct it. You can only hear “I have big bones” and “it’s a medical issue” so many times without having to ask yourself how so many people apparently have medical issues that cause obesity. There are in fact lazy people who overindulge in the worst eating habits, and the pack of accountability while simultaneously expecting the world to cater to them is in fact vexing. Airplane seats being a perfect example.
Do you think we like being fat? Do you think we have never tried to change? At some point you just except that this is who you are, and enjoy the body you have been given. By the way, they are lot more of us, then there are of you.
Is there not a nicer way in which you could get your opinion out there? I am overweight, I am also incredibly active, going to the gym a few times every week with a personal trainer that is a taekwondo master and has no mercy for me being tired or not feeling it. Your wording makes you sound ignorant and rude, not all of us are blessed with great genetics and really have to work hard to still be overweight. This is a Disney site and I’m not sure the right place for your mean speech.
they had the light cycles in front of SM for a while, the cars are what i call Asian fit, they are in fact designed a bit small for there body ergonomics, there is 3 main restraints on the bike, a bar that open up behind your knee, and a clam shell type of piece that presses against your clef and a back restraint at looks like you have a light disk on your back, the 2 lowers restraints did not fit me well, in fact the bar for the knee was completely wrong, Asians have a different leg structure then us and they are on average a lot shorter, especially China, teh calf restraint was more toward my ankle and would close correctly due to calf size, when you push the Handel pars forward to lock the back restraint they are in a bit of a odd position, you ride this thing, like a crotch rocket, any Women out there that are a bit chesty are also gonna have a issue, again, Asians, especially China don’t have large upper ares for women, the cars should of been redesigned for other area of the world, Universal is having the same issue with Mario, Japan was the first so max size is 40 in, i lived in Japan for years and when i went to parks in Japan,Hong Kong and singapore, i had issue fitting in those rides, when i rode the same rids in the U.S. no issues

Disney did nothing wrong here
If you look at many of the people walking around the park, they would qualify as obese.
So it appears to me that if you are obese you have to live with that choice and go on a different ride.
I realize a very small percentage of those people have no control over it but it would be interesting to conduct a study and find out how many have a medical condition that causes it
Can’t expect to please everyone. I’m a large dude and I know that there will be some attractions that cannot accommodate. That’s just life and I don’t feel entitled to make a fuss over it. But on the other hand, as many fatties as there are, it wouldn’t be that much more of a wait to add one wide seat per train.
I am 6’2″ and 290# with a 43″ waist and fit in just fine. Disney had done a good job to accommodate most body types as I consider myself on the large side. It is impossible to accommodate everyone!
I’m more perturbed people are going to want to use the other seat rather than the bicycle one just because they don’t want to ride the cycle part. Not because they’re obese or disabled. They just don’t want to. I’d love to ride the cycle part but i physically cant.
WOW.. You know all rides have size limitations? Hogwarts, My shoulders barely fit. If you are over a certain height, you can’t ride Rocket. I do not hear tall people complaining and they truly can’t do anything about their height. Besides it is not about your weight, it is the size. a 200 pound athlete carries the weight very different from a 200 pound non athlete. Large fit people will not fit as well but they are not here complaining they are too fit to ride Iron. I will probably have the same problem and I am not obese so the bottom line is the ride has limitations like all rides do and if I fit great if I do not, I will not complain that it is Disney’s fault.
I don’t consider myself “obese” but, I’m 6’8″, 250lbs. and hoping I can fit. I’ve heard conflicting reports whether there is or is not a “test bike” prior to getting in line. I, like many others, do not want to get up to board and find I have to do the “walk of shame” to the bench seat. I’m sure the bench will give me a “Tron” experience….Not.
Lots of comments talking about it’s people’s own fault they are big. 2 points:
1) The article said “average” people were struggling to fit.
2) Blame aside, why not design a ride to fit as many people as possible?
I think it is interesting that Disney would spend so much money on a ride that is unable to accommodate so many people. Makes me wonder if they knew this or if it was a major oversite? To be honest, I am not much of coaster person – so I’m not super sad about the possibility of not being able to ride, but it is very scary to think that you are on a roller coaster with people saying they do not fit well on the ride. What a nightmare!
Most football players couldn’t ride this attraction then. If they don’t want to accommodate larger people that is their choice. But if you can fit into an airline seat comfortably, then you could probably sit in their seat.
I had that experience going to Disneyland , a lot of rides weren’t designed for big people. I couldn’t ride with my husband at the time, had to go separate. Guess what? I lost weight because it really hit me how much weight I’d put on since we first married. I’m now much healthier, no high blood pressure, no high cholesterol, eat better and can now fit in the rides. I realize some people have other issues, but being obese affects us in many ways including theme park ride safety.
A tweet shared by Theme Park Express (@ThemeParkExpres) showed multiple comments from those having rode the attraction and how it may have ruined their Disney experience.
HAVING RIDDEN!!
Considering they used the exact same vehicles designed for the Asian masses this will definitely be a problem for tall, muscular and overweight people going to the Florida park.
It’s not so much about the weight of people that is the issue. The issue is that the average Asian body type is shorter, and smaller in dimensions (arms, legs, and yes weight) than the average American. Disney SHOULD have considered this fact. The bikes should have been a little bigger to accommodate the taller, broader, and thicker population. Even a perfectly healthy American male is going to be huge compared to the average Asian that the bikes were designed for. I also think that they should have the disability seating on every train. Right now as I understand it the Disability seats are on only 2 of the 4 trains running, which means long waits for the people who are actually disabled too since those seats will be taken up by overweight people more often than not.

The issue seems to be the size is too small for average people? If most cast members can’t fit, then did they just design them completely wrong?

Agreed. Actions (or lack thereof) have consequences.

First off, I am overweight myself. It is not Disney’s fault if you are too large and don’t fit. It is my problem and certainly do not blame the park.

I think it’s a bad precedent to continue to make accommodations for “Plus” sized people. Where do we stop? Wall-E is a cautionary tale.
Amber
A better question is where do we start? A complete overhaul of our nutrition and what is in our food would be the best start.
Tom
And the irony is that it is often difficult to eat healthy at Disney and most theme parks.
